But with East entering the bidding as shown, South should have no trouble bringing home the contract. Missing only 12 high-card points, declarer can readily conclude that East must have the ace of hearts for his takeout double of one diamond. Ouce declarer makes this assumption, he is on Easy Street. At trick two he plays the jack of diamonds to the ace and returns a low heart from dummy. What can East do against this cunning play? If he rushes up with the ace, South has nine tricks without a finesse. Alternatively, if East follows low on the heart lead from dummy, South wins with the queen and establishes his clubs to assure nine tricks. The bidding tells the tale!
