Lakers want to start like last year-winning on TV
By ALEX SACHARE AP Sports Writer The Los Angeles Lakers are hoping that starting their season on the road, before a national television audience, will turn into a lucky omen for them. A year ago the Lakers opened with a televised 103-102 victory over the San Diego Clippers as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar beat the buzzer with a hook shot for the winning basket, then embraced ebullient rookie Magic Johnson in a jubilant postgame celebration. Those two stars, and that enthusiasm, played key roles in the Lakers’ march to the 1980

National Basketball Association championship, which they wrapped up with a six-game decision over the Philadelphia 76ers in the title series. Tonight the Lakers will open defense of their crown under circumstances remarkably similar to last year. Once again they are on the road, this time at Seattle, and once again their game will be nationally televised (CBS, 11:30p.m., EDT). The Los Angeles-Seattle matchup, which is expected to draw a crowd of about 40,000 to the Kingdome, is one of nine games
tonight as the NBA starts its 35th season. Also scheduled are the Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics, Indiana Pacers at New Jersey Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Bullets at Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets, Portland Trail Blazers at Utah Jazz, Golden State Warriors at Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets at San Diego Clippers. The expansion Dallas Mavericks, who became the NBA’s 23rd team this year, will play their first regular season game at home Saturday night against the San Antonio Spurs. Dick Motta of Dallas is one of seven coaches who have been named to their posts since the close of last season. The other six will be on the coaching lines Friday night: Bill Musselman of Cleveland, Scotty Robertson of Detroit, Jack McKinney of Indiana, Stan Albeck of San Antonio, Paul Silas of San Diego and Gene Shue of Washington. The Lakers, bidding to become the first team since the 1968-69 Boston Celtics to repeat as league champion, present the same nucleus as last year. Abdul-Jabbar, the brilliant center who won the most valuable player award for the sixth time in his 11-year career last

season, is back to serve as the hub on offense and defense. And Johnson, the 6-foot-8 guard who filled in for Abdul-Jabbar and came up with 42 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists in the playoff finale, has a year’s experience under his belt and iis shooting the ball better than ever. They are joined by forwardcenter Jim Chones, forwards Jamaal Wilkes and Mark Landsberger, guard Norm Nixon and swingman Michael Cooper in a versatile, seven-man unit. Seattle, however, made a very significant change in the offseason, dealing Dennis Johnson, their talented but moody defensive star, to the Phoenix Suns for Paul Westphal, the offensive virtuoso who has averaged better than 20 points per game in each of the last five seasons. NO COMPLACENCY PITTSBURGH (AP) - Complacency? There’s no such word in the lexicon of Joe Greene, the veteran defensive tackle of the .Pittsburgh Steelers, four times the Super Bowl champions. “We’ve been around the Horn four times and there’s a different challenge each time,” Greene commented.” We can do better. And it makes me feel good to know that we can do better.”
