Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D .M.D.

The parents of Eric and Krista are gracefully motivating their children toward cultural interests! Good parents can prevent early school dropouts! CASE V-692: Eric and Krista (aged about 10 and 8), are the children of Dr. and Mrs. William Knudsen. When I addressed the banquet session last June of the Upper Peninsula Dental Society of Michigan, these children were in attendance. They came forward and were introduced to me by their gracious parents. So I asked the children to help me by passing some papers around among the dentists and their wives. And when 1 returned to my office, I had some of the newspaper booklets mailed to them which I felt might fall within their interests, including the “Compliment Club”. Shortly thereafter I received an envelope with their “Thank you” letters. “Dear Dr. Crane,” Eric began, “thank you for the very nice book you sent me (which was the “Little Sandy Sleighfoot’ ’ Christmas story). “And your Compliment Club booklet. I found it very interesting. “I have two grammas and grampas so I am going to make sure I write to them lots. “I am glad you could come to Escanaba because I enjoyed your speech lots. Thank you again for the book. Sincerely, Eric.” You readers may recall that the “Compliment Club” booklet also describes that “League of the Golden Pen”. In it you write at least one letter per week to somebody who may be lonely, in sorrow, or in a Nursing Home and hungry for a word of praise or sympathy to buoy up their drooping spirits. That was what led Eric to mention his grandparents. Krista’s letter was hand printed and signed, as follows: “Dear Dr. Crane,” she began, “Thank you for the book. I’m really going to enjoy

it. And I think the song (about Sandy Sleighfoot) is nice. “I have had swimming lessons Monday, Wednesday and Friday. “Yesterday there was a real big storm. It made some of the trees fall down. At the Airport some of the airplanes crashed in the storm. “I read some of the booklet that you gave me. I’m trying to compliment people. It is nice knowing you. Love, Krista.” Eric’s handwritten note was better than the average script of college students today. Moreover, Krista’s printed missive was neat and legible. Eric and his father had also joined me at the Airport to say goodbye the next morning and Eric had brought me the morning newspaper to read on my way back to Chicago. You may note that Krista’s letter is longer, while Eric seemed to have been more impressed with my reference to helping brighten the lives of older folks. They both paid close attention to my evening address, despite the fact adults comprised the rest of the audience (dentists and their wives). But I used a few more dramatic examples to intrigue Eric and Krista. You parents can launch your youngsters on their cultural career by many helpful booklets from your daily newspaper, so send for “How to Raise Your Child’s School Marks,” enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25 d. Parents can prevent early school dropouts by bolstering the educational pride of their kiddies!

Garage Sales YARD SALE: Van Bibber Road; 2nd house on the west side: Wed. Sept. 10 & Thors. Sept. 11,8-? In Memory In loving memory of Vangie House who passed away one year ago today, Sept. 9, 1979. She needed the quiet so he drew her aside, Into the shadows where they could confide, Away from the bustle where all the day long, She hurried and worried when active and strong. She needed the quiet, tho at first she rebelled, But gently, so gently, her cross he upheld And whispered so sweetly of spiritual things Tho weakened in body, her spirit took wings To heights never dreamed of when active and gay He loved her so greatly, He drew her away. She needed the quiet, no prison her bed, But a beautiful valley of blessings instead A place to grow richer in Jesus to hide She needed the quiet, so he drew her aside. Vangie's family and friends. In loving memory of Michael Wayne Arnold on his birthday Sept. 9, 1980. A beautiful little blue eyed "angel" Was born ten years ago today. Six short years was all God let him stay. Today no party will be here only flowers On your grave, our love, and a silent prayer. We cherish the years we spent with Michael The happy hours, the things we use to do God you know how much we loved him So hold him in your arms and tell him "Happy Birthday Michael" we love and miss you so. Dearly loved and Sadly missed. Daddy, Mother, Terry, Mark,/ Tina, Kieth and all those who; loved him. Cards of Thanks I wish to say thanks to m$ friends, relatives, and visitors for the many nice cards, flowers, extra deeds* and phone calls while I was a patient at the Methodist Hospital.
