MR. and MRS. LARRY E. McGILL Notes & Quotes
Do-it-yourself framing
By BETTY H. SENDMEYER Extension Home Economist If you want to frame grandma s quilting squares or perhaps mat and frame that great picture your child did in school, but the expense frightens you, consider the latest do-it-yourself shops- those specializing in picture framing. Shop owners help you decide on a mat (if one is needed) and frame stock. They then cut the mat, frame and glass (if any) to fit the picture. You can take the kit home and assemble it yourself, or you can use the shop’s tools and equipment and assemble it yourself on the premises. The shop owners guide you. Usually, pieces are guaranteed to fit. If a mistake is made by the shopkeepers, they usually will replace the material, but not your labor. If you take your time, within 30 to 40 minutes you can have a picture frame that is equal to any that you buy. The cost for a framing typically will range from 20 to 30 per cent less than a comparable custom-made frame where you do not supply the labor. Not only can you save some money, but framing the picture yourself is fun and can give you a great sense of accomplishment.

Cream of tartar removes discoloration
DEAR HELOISE: We have recently moved and since using the water in our new home, my aluminum pots are destroyed. They have turned pure black inside. I have used everything I could think of to clean them but to no avail. I am really disgusted because they were a wedding present and I have always kept them so shiny. I fear I will have to dispose of them unless you can tell me how to get them clean again. I would really appreciate any help you have to offer. Patricia Wayne * * * Don’t despair, luv. Your problem can be solved part of it very simply, part of it not so simply. The removal of the black discoloration is the easy part. Just boil two to three tablespoons of cream of tartar per quart of water in each discolored pot for 10 to 15 minutes.

bride, along with Theresa Johnson, Lawrenceburg, a friend of the newlyweds, serving as bridesmaids. The bride wore a floor-length gown of white chiffon over a taffeta skirt. The fitted lace bodice had a low-rounded neckline trimmed with white seed pearls and had Juliet lace sleeves with three-quarter length overlays of crystal pleated chiffon. A row of self-covered buttons lined the back closing of the gown and the cuffs of the sleeves. The chapellength train was trimmed with lace and crystal pleats, while her full-length veil was trimmed with lace and secured with a lace cap accented with seed pearls. A cascading bouquet of yellow roses, stephanotis and baby’s breath was carried by the, who also wore her mother’s diamond necklace and carried her late grandmother’s handkercheif.
Afterward, rub the pot briskly with a soap-filled steel wool pad, then rinse it well and dry. This discoloration is absolutely harmless. Mostly it is caused by minerals in the water or by some foods, or perhaps both. Now, for the not-so-simple part. The root of your problem is probably extremely hard water. To help in preventing black pots in the future, I would suggest you install a water softener. This will also help to keep lime deposits from forming in tea kettles, etc. One further word of caution... Do not allow aluminum pots and pans to remain in soapy water for long periods of time. This will discolor them too and you surely don’t want to be the cause of those shiny pots turning black, especially that easily! Heloise
