TANYA ROBERTS: Angel No. 6

Newest 'Angel' already subject of wild rumors c. 1980 N.Y. Times News Service HOLLYWOOD The day before Tanya Roberts first met the press after being named as the newest of “Charlie’s Angels.” some scandal speculator reported that she had already had been fired from the show'. “If I had heard it from a friend rather than picking it up as a wild rumor.” she told us. “yeah. I w'ould have been in shock ” As it turned out, reports of her quick demise were obviously false and Tanya was able to show up in living color for the first press conference of her life. Tn “Charlie’s Angels.” she will play a woman who has been around, who’s tough, street-smart, knows the score. Judging from the way she fielded reporters’ questions, this could be a classic bit of type-casting. Tanya is 25, tall, auburn-haired and has a New York edge of awareness about her which will make her “Angel” character easier to assume. She’s also strikingly pretty and. if you've ever seen her in such forgettable films as “California Dreaming" or “Zuma Beach,” you know she’ll have no trouble with filling out the requisite bikini forms. In any event, she offers a sharply defined contrast to Shelley Hack, the “Angel" she replaces after just one year with “Charlie." Where Shelley is pale and wan and not quite riveting. Tanya is colorful and outspoken and nervy enough to take on the pressures, the public and the press. Does she anticipate any problems with the remaining “Angels,” Jackie Smith and Cherv! Ladd? After all, she’s the new girl on the block, grabbing the headlines and the initial attention at the start of the new season. Is it going to work out? “I think they’re terrific.” Tanya said. “Jackie sent me flowers as soon as I was announced, which was a very beautiful gesture. And I had lunch the other day with Cheryl and Jackie. They’re warm and they welcomed me and we seemed to get along very well. I feel really positive about it. .. I can’t wait.” Does Tanya think that becoming an “Angel” may hurt her career? “No. I think taking this role is all positive. I think it’s great. As for being a ‘serious’ actress. I am right now I’m an actress who wants to act period. Whether Ido it opposite Brando or in ‘Charlie’s Angels’ makes no difference.” What was it like waiting to find out if she was finally chosen for the role? “Terrible! First I heard the screen test was going to be made and I went into shock. Then I did it and waited. I wanted the job very much ... and the anxiety kept getting to me. Then I heard one of the other girls had not gotten the role and it just kept on going and going and getting worse and worse. “And then you reach a point where you say, OK. if they can’t make up their minds, then they probably don’t want me at all. You’re second-guessing everyone, which you just can’t do Which is exactly what I did. “For two weeks. I was miserable. And then I finally found out . . and I was ecstatic.” “Charlie’s Angels” may be in for a bit of trouble this coming season, after what seems like a lifetime of being the premier example of a successful TV jiggle show. For one thing, it has been switched from its regular Wednesday at 9 p.m. (Eastern time) spot to a new and extremely tough night. Sunday, where it will air at 8 p.m. opposite such heavy hitters as “Archie Bunker’s Place” and “CHiPs.” Then again, it not only has an entirely new face in Tanya, but Jackie Smith the last of the original three “Angels” has made it definite that she won’t allow “Charlie” to kick her around any more after her contract runs out at the end of this season. Now that Tanya has been given the casting break of her young life, does she feel that she may be getting in on an about-to-burst bubble 9 “I think audiences can get used to anything,” she said quickly “I think that if they like the idea and the concept of the show, I don’t think these changes will cause any problems. I think I might be something new, something special The public likes new things.” When ABC and the Spelling-Goldberg Studio made up their minds to fire Hack, that model-turned-actress protested that her contract was such that they couldn’t do such a thing Then someone read her the small print. Her successor has no such illusions

Supermarket Shopper More about the advent of grocery 'box stores'

By MARTIN SLOANE Discount food stores have finally arrived! Whether they are called box stores, limitedassortment stores or warehouse stores, their impact is being felt. How do we know? There are several clues. First, many supermarket operators who once ignored the box stores are now working to put them out of business. THE TRADE PUBLICATION “Supermarket News” recently reported that many operators of conventional supermarkets are putting considerable pressure on manufacters to limit their sales to the new discount stores. Some manufacturers are being told, “Stop selling to them or else. The "or else” shouldn’t bother the manufacturers. Some of them can remember when the grocery chains pressured them not to sell to Mike Cullen’s new-fangled supermarket, the first such store in the United States, that was back in 1930. It didn’t work then, and it won’t work today. Another clue that box stores have arrived is the number of them being opened by supermarket chains themselves. A & P lIAS MORE than 50 Plus Stores, Jewel Foods has Jewel-T Warehouse Stores in many major marketing areas, and Grand Union is rushing to catch up with its Basics Food Warehouse Stores. Safeway , the giant of the industry, has announced that it will soon launch its first two box stores.

House Cdll I Drugs helpful in preventing problems from heart attacks?

By G. Timothy Johnson, M.I). Dear Dr. Johnson: In a reo-nl column you mentioned some drugs that are now being suggested as helpful in preventing problems after a heart attack. You said, too, that one of these drugs also has been used for gout I’ve been taking Zyloprim for gout for 17 years. Would it also be useful against heart attack problems? -- Wayne H., Chicago Dear Wayne: In the column you referred to I discussed

At the Food Marketing Institute’s recent convention in Dallas, the most heavily attended seminar was “How to Convert your Supermarket to a Warehouse Store.” Supermarkets certainly have a right to fear the new box stores. In a recent survey by the Newpaper Advertising Bureau, 40 per cent of the shoppers questioned said they would switch to a limited-assortment or warehouse store if one opened in their area. WHO WILL YOU KNOW when a box store is comming to your community? Usually you will be able to tell weeks before the box store opens its doors. The conventional supermarkets in your area will start running big ads claiming they have “warehouse prices.” Does your supermarket have a few “no frills” products tucked away in a corner? It will move those generic products to the front to the front of the store and add 50 new items to the line. You will also see more low-priced private-label items on the shelves. Double coupons? Yes, they too have been used to meet the competition of box stores. SO, WHETHER OR not you decide to shop at box stores, their rapid growth across the country will favorably affect the prices you pay at the checkout counter. It couldn’t come at a better time! I will tell you more about box stores in future columns.

recent studies involving several drugs that have been tested in heart attack victims to help prevent later complications. One of those drugs is sulfinpyrazone (trade name: Anturane) which is one of several drugs long utilized in the treatment of gout. Sulfinpyrazone reduced the incidence of sudden death by 74 per cent in one group of heart attack victims treated with the drug between the second and

have done much better by leading a heart instead, but he made the more normal lead of a club.) When you follow low from dummy, East signals with the rune of hearts as you win the club queen with the ace. You have eight sure tricks at this point and apparently your only legitimate chance for a ninth lies in the diamond suit. But when you play the A-K of diamonds, hoping for a 3-2 division, West produces first the ten of diamonds and then a low club. The unfortunate effect of this is that you have only those same eight tricks you started with. It now appears that you must eventually go down one, but if you’re a fighter from the old school you realize that there’s still a chance for the contract. Accordingly, you stop playing diamonds and cash

seventh month following the attack. So encouraging were these results that Dr. Eugene Braunwald, one of the world’s leading cardiologists, commented in an editorial published in the New England Journal of Medicine: “It would certainly be desirable to repeat the sulfinpyrazone study to confirm its results to determine whether commencement of treatment at an earlier time, e g., one week after infection, would exert

the A-K-Q of spades. You then play a low club to dummy’s king. This forces East to discard another heart because he cannot afford to discard a diamond from his doubleton J-8. You now lead a heart from dummy, hoping to find East with all the missing high hearts. Luckily, it turns out that this method of play is sensationally effective. East can do no better than cash his four remaining hearts, but he is then compelled to lead a diamond from his J-8 into dummy’s Q-9. So the end result is that you wind up making three notrump despite East s formidable heart holding. Why? Because West did not lead a heart and also because you did not panic when the diamonds proved to be divided 4-1. Instead, you snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by planning an endplay that overcame the unfavorable diamond division.

even greater benefit than reported. “However, unless future studies are nonconfirmatory, the success of this drug appears to warrant its administration at least from the second to the seventh month after infarction. Therefore, despite the great desirability of learning more about this drug, the information available suggests that sulfinpyrazone should be approved for use after infarction, and made available to the American
