Kentucky survives Indiana rally in both games for series split
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Coach David Lee never rests easy until the game is over. Even with a 13-point lead in the second half. “In a game like this, there’s no such thing as a comfortable lead,” Lee said after Saturday night’s thrilling 96-93 victory by the Kentucky high school AllStars over their arch-rivals from Indiana. “Anything can happen in a game with this much intensity, and it usually does,” said the Kentucky coach. The Kentuckians seemed to have everything going their way after breaking open a close game with a run of 12 straight points for a 62-49 advantage with 16 minutes remaining. But, just as Lee feared, Indiana refused to fold. The Hoosiers clawed their way back into contention with a run of 10

straight, then briefly took the lead before Kentucky settled the issue at the free throw line in the closing minutes. “I told our guys we had to settle down and be more patient,” said Lee, who called a time out after two straight baskets by Anderson’s Henry Johnson capped the Hoosier streak and made it 67-66. “They were just taking it to the hoop on us,” Lee said “We became too complacent with the 13-point lead, and in two minutes, we didn’t have a lead.” The big gun for Kentucky, avenging an 82-80 loss to Indiana a week earlier at Louisville, was 6-foot-5 Dwight Higgs of Owensboro, who poured in 29 points and hauled down 18 rebounds against taller Indiana defenders. “We got a super effort out of
Higgs,” said Lee. “What more can you say? But, really, we had individuals the whole game who came in and sparked us. This game, like last week, could have gone either way. It was a fantastic, competitive game for an All-Star game.” The loss still left Indiana ahead 41-24 overall in the series that began in 1940. The Kentucky girls also reversed a loss from a week earlier and beat the Indiana girls 72-64, the eighth victory in 10 games for Kentucky since that series began in 1976 In the girls game, Kym Hampton, a 6-foot-l, 175-pound center from Louisville Iroquois, scored 21 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, and Rita Berry of Oldham County added 16 points to lead the Kentucky victory. Kentucky stretched a 31-25
