Worry Clinic

By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D.

Phyllis presents the views of experienced women, plus many of her own university coed classmates. For the Purdue coeds she mentions are patently naive and illogical. Send for the booklet below! CASE U-695: Phyllis 8., aged 20, is a college senior. “Dr. Crane,” she said, “I attend a state university that is a rival of Purdue. “So I am happy to show up the illogic of the Purdue women who have been writing the Indianapolis STAR, urging that your ‘Worry Clinic’ be dropped. “Don’t think all coeds are so illogical! “For we realize that when a divorcee enters a roadside beer joint at midnight, unattended, and then wangles a date with a stranger to take her home in the wee hours, she didn’t go there just because she was thirsty, as those Purdue coeds insisted! “Yet those naive Purdue coeds insisted that ‘thirst and conversation’ were her two most obvious reasons. “They also said that your article ‘perpetuates the old view of woman as temptress and is totally counterproductive to the women’s movement which seeks to understand women as human beings and not inferior sexual objects’. “Well, Dr. Crane, smart women realize you fully understand their motives and that the divorcee didn’t go alone into that roadside tavern at midnight just because she was thirsty and wanted conversation ! “That is a laugh! “What’s wrong with the males at Purdue that they’d let themselves be hoodwinked so neatly by their coed classmates? “Why didn’t the Purdue men come to your support,

Dr. Crane? “If you’d poll mature women and especially those who are wives, I’m sure they’d agree with that Indiana judge who dismissed the charge of attempted assault that the divorcee raised against her pickup tavern escort, after the latter took her home. “Why, my mother would say those juvenile Purdue coeds weren’t dry behind their ears! “Maybe they better take a course in psychology!” FALLACIOUS THINKING The Purdue coeds that Phyllis referred to really needed a course in logic. For in college debate, you must stick to the precisely stated “proposition” when you try to argue logically. Instead, they tried to work up emotional ire at my column by saying that women are entitled to enter a tavern or cocktail lounge when they are thirsty and desire conversation. That was definitely not the “proposition” at issue! For the Purdue coeds ignored the time element and a midnight visit to a roadside tavern by an unescorted divorcee is a very different debate topic than an afternoon visit to a cocktail lounge by coeds or professional women! Even in the latter case, the usual sophisticated male assumes such women are subconsciously “on the make,” despite the fact my dissection of the female inner motives is deemed horrendous! Send for my booklet “Ten Commonest Fallacies and Political Tricks,” enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25 1 . (Always write to Dr. Crane, Hopkins Bldg., Mellott, Indiana 47V58, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 25' to cover typing and printing costs when you send lor one ol his booklets.)
