Bird looks back after first season in pros FRENCH LICK, Ind. (AP) Larry Bird, resting at home after his rookie season in the National Basketball Association, says the pace as a professional player is “very tough, but if you can’t take it you don’t deserve to be in the league.’’ Bird, who led a remarkable turnaround by the Boston Celtics, says the sudden fame and fortune really hasn’t changed his life. “I don’t think so,” the 6-foot-9 former All-American at Indiana State University said. “I don’t feel like it is. “I think I might get a little bit more mature,” he said. “I look at things differently now than I did five or six years ago, but I am happy just to have the strength and the ability to play the game I love best. “A lot of hard work, a lot of practice and a lot of desire got me where I am. All I can do is play the hardest I know how. Since I have the ability, I have to use it to the fullest.” Bird, who was drafted by Boston after his junior year at Indiana State, said the Celtics’ playoff loss to Philadelphia was a big disappointment. “It was such a good year. We went from one of the worst records in the NBA to the best, in a big turnaround for us. The fans really enjoyed it, and when anything is going so well for you, you hate to see it end. They (the 76ers) just got us this time. I felt they were playing the best ball of the whole year when they came into the playoffs.” Bird said the biggest difference between pro ball and college ball is the continuous travel. “It would have been nice to have a couple of nights of rest now and then,” he said. “We went out there and tried to do our best, but sometimes you are just tired. “Salaries make the schedule, really. We get paid well and we have to go out there and play. I think if they cut the salaries way back and cut the number of games way down, the fans would get more enjoyment out of the game.”

Billingham and Perez are reunited
By HERSCHEL NISSENSON AP Sports Writer Jack Billingham has a new lease on his baseball life but in a way it seemed like old times. “I’m 37 years old and I felt like I was 21,” Billingham said after making his debut with Boston Thursday night he previously pitched for Los Angeles, Houston, Cincinnati and Detroit and hurling five effective if inelegant innings as the Red Sox whipped the Cleveland Indians 6-2. “Any time you join a new team it’s like that. You want to impress them,” he added. And there was Billingham’s old colleague Tony Perez, one day past his 38th birthday, driving in the runs just like he did when they were teammates in Cincinnati for six years. Perez walked and scored on Carlton
76ers don't have to worry about Jabbar in game six
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Can the Los Angeles Lakers win without Kareem Abdul-Jabbar? “He’s our offense, he’s our defense,” said Lakers guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson. “He’s the man we go to when we’re in trouble.” But the Lakers won’t have the 7-foot-2 Abdul-Jabbar to go to tonight when they take on the Philadelphia 76ers in the sixth game of the National Basketball Association championship series. Abdul-Jabbar is back in Los Angeles nursing the sprained left ankle he suffered in Wednesday night’s 108-103 victory that gave Los Angeles a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven playoff finals. Postgame X-rays were negative and Abdul-Jabbar was supposed to accompany the team here, but when the Lakers’ flight took off Thursday afternoon, it took off without Abdul-Jabbar. “It is extremely doubtful that Kareem would be able to play,”
Fisk’s two-run triple during a three-run rally in the second inning, doubled a run across in the third and socked a two-run homer in the eighth. Billingham, who was acquired from Detroit earlier in the week, allowed two runs on five hits while walking four but picked up the victory with help from Dick Drago. The veteran right-hander gave up two runs in the first inning, then stranded runners in scoring postiion in three of the next four innings. “We wanted Billingham to pitch five innings and Drago four and it worked out perfectly,” said Manager Don Zimmer. Cleveland Manager Dave Garcia thought otherwise. “He (Billingham) never should have gone five innings, but he did,” Garcia griped. “We

said Dr. Robert Kerlan, the Lakers’ team physician, who reported the ankle had swolen and become stiff overnight. “By keeping him in Los Angeles and treating him here, he will be much better prepared to play on Sunday if that game is necessary.” But Kerlan said the odds of Abdul-Jabbar playing on Sunday are only 50-50 at this point. A win tonight and the Lakers don’t have to worry about Sunday they’d be wearing the NBA crown for the first time since 1972. But winning without Abdul-Jabbar, a five-time most valuable player and the most dominating force in the game, won’t be easy. Especially since it’s a mustwin situation for the Sixers, who will have a noisy crowd of 18,276 at the Spectrum rooting them on. “There’s no tomorrow for us,” said Philadelphia guard Henry Bibby. “Either we win or else. And we’re not ready for
could have gotten to Billingham. In the first inning we had a shot, but just didn’t do it.” Blue Jays 1, Mariners 0 Jim Clancy pitched a threehitter, and Barry Bonnell broke an 0-for-19 slump with a runscoring single in the second inning. Clancy outdueled Floyd Bannister, who allowed only four hits. Toronto scored when Damaso Garcia singled, stole second and came home on Bonnell’s single. Seattle’s only hits were third-inning singles by Bob Stinson and Dan Meyer and a ninth-inning single by Meyer. White Sox 6, Brewers 4 Pinch hitter Wayne Nordhagen capped a four-run seventh inning with a three-run double, Claudell Washington drilled a pair of run-scoring singles and Chet Lemon homered to lead Chicago. anything else yet.” Los Angeles survived without Abdul-Jabbar for the final 3:58 of the third period Wednesday night, even extending its lead from two points to eight. “But it’s a completely different thing to be without him for 48 minutes instead of just four,” observed Doug Collins, the Sixers’ injured guard. “They need his scoring and his presence inside.” That was apparent in Game Five, when Abdul-Jabbar came back onto the court for the final period and scored 14 of his 40 points as the Lakers held off a Philadelphia rally. With the score tied and the game on the’ line, he scored a three-point play with 33 seconds left that proved decisive.
The injury to Abdul-Jabbar,, coming after last week’s suspension of forward Spencer. Haywood, leaves Los Angeles with nine players in uniform tonight.
leading 2-1 in the seventh, Bob Molinaro tripled and scored Washington’s single and two walks loaded the bases. Pirates 3, Giants 2 Ed Ott led off the 12th with a single off Tom Griffin, ad : vanced to second on Dale Berra’s sacrifice and scored on Bill Madlock’s ground single up the middle as the Pirates posted their sixth victory of the season in their final turn at bat. Winner Enrique Romo worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the llth. Padres 2, Cardinals 1 Dave Winfield’s double and a single by Willie Montanez produced the winning run in the seventh inning against Pete Vuckovich. Winner John Curtis went the first seven innings, allowing seven hits before giving way to Rollie Fingers.
