Witness claims Ruiz planned to cheat in marathon

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. f AP) Marty Craven wasn’t in Boston when Rosie Ruiz won the women’s division of the marathon. But he said Wednesday he was around at a more crucial time. Craven claims he was with Ruiz when a plan was discussed on how to win the marathon without running the 26-plus miles, according to a copyright story in the Thursday edition of the Wilmington Morning News. There have been allegations Ruiz cheated by not running the full distance in the marathon. Craven told the newspaper he met Ruiz last month while jogging in Central Park in New York “She was a runner and I was a runner. She isn’t bad-looking, so I figured I’d start a conversation,” he said “After we talked for a while she told me she had qualified for Boston.” Craven, an author who has published a book on the Kennedy assassination, said he didn’t believe Ruiz because he didn’t think she looked like a runner. “She started telling me she knew this girl who cheated in the New York Marathon by tak-

ing the subway. And I started to tell her how easy it would be to cheat in Boston,” he told the Morning News. “I told her winning the Boston Marathon was SIOO,OOO in endorsements for shoes and stuff. Craven hasn’t heard from Ruiz since, but he said he’s “positive” Monday’s star and Tuesday’s question is his Central Park acquaintance. He told the newspaper he’s also positive of one other thing. “I think that friend she was talking about in the New York Marathon was really her. I think she was the one who took the subway,” he said. And officials of the New York race are investigating that possibility. A freelance photographer says she remembers riding the subway with Ruiz that day. Craven said his plan for a marathon fraud calls for a hill, Gatorade and an extra shirt. “I told her the easiest way was to get your number and then put another shirt over top of that one,” he said. “Then you get some Gatorade. When a runner comes up for some Gatorade, you give him some

Hanlon also ran on the first place 440-yard dash relay team with Steve Dean, Robert Breese and Steve Neeley. Barr won the 1600 meter run in 4:35 with teammate Coty Stewart finishing third and the 800 meter run in 2:02.9. Cascade dominates entire track meet at Cloverdale

CLOVERDALE-Shortly after the three-team track meet at Cloverdale started Wednesday, the winner became apparent and it was a battle for second and third places. Cascade won the meet easily with 91Vfe points, Cloverdale finished second at 35'/ 2 and Monrovia was third with 32. TO SAY CASCADE dominated the meet is like saying the weather will get hot in July--too obvious. The Cadets took 10 firsts in the meet and first and second in five events. Monrovia took three firsts and Cloverdale only two. Kent Christian and Doug Musson were Cascade’s double event winners. Christian won the low hurdles in 41.3 seconds and the high hurdles in 15.6 seconds, which is the fastest reported time in this area since track season opened. Musson, one of the key members in Cascade’s successful cross country season last fall, won the 1600 meter run in 4:33.5, with

North Putnam wins 6th straight; Greencastle doesn't win or lose

They’re getting tired, but the North Putnam Cougars are still winning, beating Turkey Run 12-3 Wednesday night on the Warriors’ home field with a combination of 13 hits and solid pitching from Mike Adams and Randy Collier. Greencastle and Monrovia battled to a 5-5 tie after nine complete innings before the game was suspended because of darkness. When, and if, the game will be completed is unknown. Coach Stan Ward said that because it was a conference game, the West Central Conference rules would have to be checked. AT TURKEY RUN, Mike Adams went five and a third innings, striking out seven, walking one, while scattering five of the six Turkey Run hits and no earned runs. Randy Collier relieved Adams in the sixth, struck out three, walked two, allowed one hit and two

Hill's pole vault record was only thing positive in meet at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS - Alan Hill’s pole vault record of 15 feet, three inches kept DePauw University from being totally embarrassed by Butler University in a men’s track meet Tuesday. Hill qualified for the NCAA track meet earlier, but solidified himself as a challenger for the Division IU pole vault title. He has earned

CLOVERDALE’S TWO firsts were won by John Sanders in the 800 meter run and Troy Craig in the pole vault. Sanders, a top contender for the WCC 800 meter run title in the May 9 meet at Blaekstock, turned the two laps in 2:04.7, just ahead of Cascade’s Hogan. Another event which pleased coach John Garner, though it involved competition between teammates, was the shot put. of the Cougar pitching trio, backed his partner with three hits, including a solo home run along with his three singles for two RBIs. David Mcßride rapped out three singles for the Cougars, while David Evens and David Williams each had two singles and Collier a double. North Putnam now stands at 6-0 for the season. C. V. SKELTON delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday night to tie up the ball game and save the Tiger Cubs from a second conference loss. However, nothing was decided because neither team could push a run home in nine innings. Monrovia took advantage of five Greencastle errors to score five unearned runs, according to coach Stan Ward. “We played very poorly through the first six innings defensively,” the coach said. For the second game in a row,

Power has been going 22 feet and better in the long jump during practice, but a jump of 21 feet, four and a quarter inches won the event for Butler, with Power finishing second. Jim Iddins and Dave Hellmich gave DePauw a first and third in the mile run. Iddins won the event in 4:29. Mike Hanna won both the 100, 220 yard dashes for the Tigers, i""— 1 —•————

Brian Borer came to the Tiger Cub rescue from the bullpen. Chuck Johnson started, was relieved by Mark Braden in the sixth, then John Mahoney came on for three batters and Borer came on and “did the job.” Gregg Nicholson had two of Greencastle’s nine hits, a double and single. Nicholson’s double came with two outs in the ninth, but the Cubs couldn't get him home. Mike Meyer, Ronnie Secrest, and Jim Black joined Skelton with a single each.
