Fonda to Brando, everyone has Strasberg opinion By WILLIAM A. R AIDY ' Newhouse News Service NEW YORK Lee Strasberg, master of the school of “method” acting who has trained a whole marguee full of famous actors from Marlon Brando to A 1 Pacino, is a man everyone in the theater likes to talk about except, that is, for Strasberg himself Listen to these accolades and epithets: “W'ithout him, 1 would be a quivering piece of amoeba.” Jane Fonda. "Everything I have today I owe Lee Strasberg. I wish him the glories of the universe.” Ellen Burstyn. "Lee has set the theater back 100 years. You can always tell Lee’s students. They’re the ones you can’t hear behind the third row." David Merrick. "It’s kind of insanity that this personally ugly little man should have become the leader of the American theater.” Stella Adler. "Lee Strasberg is constipating.” Karl Malden "Brilliant.” Shelley Winters. "Destructive.” Julie Harris. 1 "Lee you-should-excuse-the-expression Strasberg ... ” George C. Scott. “Why the would you be doing a book on Lee Strasberg?” Why would ANYONE be doing a book on Lee Strasberg?” Elia Kazan. Cindy Adams, wife of columnist and humorist Joey Adams, listened to the above love notes and barbs and happily ignored the last bit of discouragement from Strasberg’s fellow director and "old friend.” She spent three years talking to 200 people some reluctant, others difficult to silence. The result is "Lee Strasberg: The Imperfect Genius of the Actors Studio,” just published by Doubleday & Co. Only a few along the way, such as composer Arthur Schwartz, resolutely refused to talk about theater’s most famous guru, teacher of Marilyn Monroe who left him all her personal belongings after her death. Mi*s. Adams has come up with an arresting and penetrating biography of the man who has exerted a dominant force in the theater (and indirectly, in films where so many of his Actors Studio students, including Paul Newman and Robert De Niro, wound up). Writing a biography of the usually withdrawn director who has often been described as “harsh”, “dogmatic”, “elusive” and “uncompromising” was no easy assignment. The author, who has all the glamour of a highly successful filmstar herself, puts it this way: "He didn’t definitely want his life story written. He didn’t definitely NOT want it written either. Lee’s preference for a memoire was ‘My Life in Art’ which deals primarily with . Stanislavsky’s artistic points of view. ‘“Stanislavsky as a human being takes second place to what he was’,” she quotes Strasberg as saying. ‘“He’s a difficult man to write about. I’m also a difficult man to write about. I’m a difficult man period. lam not the type who lies to tell what I find wrong about myself. I prefer not to talk about things like that. I’m more open now in expressing things, however. Previously I expressed only things involved in my work. Other things I wouldn’t even bother with. “‘My habit is to give people enough rope to hang themselves. I expect the worst and hope for the best, but I n°ver judge in advance. All my life I’ve worked with others, therefore I accept that sometimes but not often the other person may be right. “‘So, if it’s my feeling that this biography is maybe not going to turn out best for me well, who knows it’s not going to turn out? A lot of things DO turn out.” Strasberg, in the Adams biography, is generous to both Brando and Scott. Scott was once rejected by the Studio 1 1,000 audition annually; about 10 are accepted). The white-haired master benignly says of Scott: “I have more respect for George C. Scott than he has for himself. Scott has the capacity to be great, but I have never seen greatness in anything he’s done. And if I really answered his slurs at me I would have to be cruel, and I don’t want to be.” The high priest of the Actors Studio is painted in the book as a strangely shy, self-absorbed creature often insensitive to others’ needs. “He triggers anger and disappointment,” Adams says, “because one cannot reach the man as a person. He loves acting, not necessarily actors.” She quotes Celeste Holm as saying: “We’re things to study, to experiment with. But he can’t make contact on a personal level as one human being to another.” Strasberg, says Adams, “will not make you feel special. He is not loyal. He’s deficient socially. ... He won’t ring you on the phone to be friendly. If he doesn’t see you for years, he’s liable not even to notice it. “An associate who found the priestly severity unappealing disappeared, not to speak to him for 2M> years. She agreed to come back ‘only if Lee called me.’ He didn’t call. Somebody else called. She came back. He appeared unaware anything had happened.” Perhaps even Strasberg has a sense of humor about his social foibles. Biographer Adams tells this story: “In May 1962, John Kennedy invited him to the White House for a state dinner honoring Andre Malraux. After shaking hands with President and Mrs. Kennedy, he was supposed to shake hands with Vice President Johnson. ‘Well, I have a thing about that. I don’t shake hands. It just isn’t something I do. Anyway, I didn’t see him. There was this tall guy standing off there in a doorway all alone with no guards, qo Marine Corps adjutants, no secretary, aides nothing. I walked right by him. God knew it was Johnson over there on the side by himself waiting to get his hand shook. I literally stiffed the Vice President of the United States’.” Strasberg, who never said either “yes” or “no” to this biography, has not shaken its author’s hand. There have been no telephone calls, not even a word sent through a friend. Perhaps, a friend of the author said, he “will pretend he never read it.”

Declarer often cannot overcome a bad lie of the adverse cards and is forced to proceed in the hope that they will be divided favorably for him. But there are times when he can manipulate his resources so as to succeed despite an unlucky distribution of the missing cards, and these are the times when his mettle is fully tested. Consider this deal where West leads a diamond, declarer winning East’s king with the ace. South sees four potential losers three clubs and a heart and he therefore starts looking for ways to eliminate one of them. One possibility, after drawing trumps, is to play a low heart from dummy toward his queen. If East has the king, South will make two heart tricks instead of one and thus make the contract. Another possibility is to attack clubs by leading a low one toward dummy’s jack. If the jack loses to East’s king or ace, South will still have the Q--9 left and can later play a club from dummy toward them and perhaps score a club trick. g As the cards lie, these lines of play do not succeed and South would eventually go down one. However, after drawing trumps, declarer can assure the contract if he plays the hand correctly. He cashes the Q-9 of diamonds, discarding a heart from dummy, and then leads the ace and another heart. These plays place South firmly in the driver’s seat. The defender who wins the second heart lead with the king will have to yield a ruff and discard or else lead a club and thus establish a club trick for declarer that would otherwise be in doubt. The suggested method of play totally eliminates the luck factor that appeared to exist when dummy first came down.

Moses was a shy, introvert but he had the best education of any Jew. For he was the adopted grandson of Pharaoh, so got the private tutoring all royal princes obtained. CASE U-670: Moses was the baby whose mother hid him in a floating cradle on the Nile River to save his life. For Pharaoh, ruler of Egypt and the surrounding countries, had made a law that all the Jewish boy babies were to be killed because the Jews were having a population explosion that Pharaoh feared would be a threat to the Egyptians. Miriam was the older sister of Moses, so she acted as the world’s early baby-sitter, for she watched the cradle as it was anchored in the bullrushes near the bank of the Nile River. Pharaoh’s daughter one morning came down for a swim and happened to see the baby. So she decided to keep him as her own child so Miriam came up to her and offered to find a nurse for baby Moses. So Moses was cared for by his own mother, apparently in the royal palace. Moses thus grew to manhood as a royal adopted grandson of Pharaoh, so he had the benefit of the tutoring by the wisest men of that day. One day he saw an Egyptian overseer beating one of the Jewish workers so Moses lost his temper and killed the Egyptian. Thus he had to flee from the country. He became a shepherd and at the miracle of the burning bush, he heard God tell him to go back to Egypt and confront Pharaoh with the demand that God ordered the Egyptians to free the Jewish people and let them return to the Promised Land. Moses knew that he was the Number One, most wanted man by the Egyptian police. And his own Jewish people had also turned on him after

Moses had slain the taskmaster. So Moses tried to beg off from God’s mission, by offering a variety of excuses, finally ending with: “And Moses said unto the Lord, 0 my Lord, I am not eloquent ... but I am slow of speech and of a slow tongue (Stutterer) ... “And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man’s mouth? ... Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what to say.” Moses was still reluctant. “And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and He said, Is not Aaron, the Levite, thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, he cometh forth to meet thee ... and he shall be thy spokesman unto the people ... and he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.” So you who suffer from stage fright or stutter, can take heart for Moses was in even worse shape, since he was to confront the Emperor who had ordered him slain. God may also have picked Moses because Moses had received the equivalent of a college education, plus a post graduate doctor’s degree in statesmanship while the grandson at the court of Pharaoh. That education may also have been the deciding factor in Christ’s selecting the college trained Paul to become the founder of the early Christian churches throughout the Mediterranean Basin.
