Discrimination evidence 'overwhelming'
Jewish sect not eligible for aid, SBA rules
WASHINGTON (AP) - The “Small Business Administration has ruled that even though an ultra-religious Jewish sect known as Hasidim are victims of discrimination, the group is not eligible for federal aid to “socially and economically dis- ' advantaged” minority businesses. "The evidence of prejudice ‘and discrimination suffered by the Hasidim is overwhelming and is essentially unrefuted,” said an SBA ruling issued Thursday. But the agency also found that "serious constitutional questions" about the separation

The ruling makes it more difficult, but not impossible, for individual Hasidic-owned businesses to participate in programs which give minorities preferential treatment in the awarding of certain government contracts. Among the problems was doubt that Congress ever intended religious groups to be included in those programs.

What about faith? For many, the bed is too short and the blanket is too narrow
By REV. JAMES R. MOORE New Providence Baptist Church “For the bed it shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it." .... Isaiah 28:20 As we scan this nation of ours we can see that God has so richly blessed America in many ways for so many years. Her great boundaries, great wealth, and great resources speak of the greatness of God, not of man’s greatness. We have great cities, devastating weapons, mighty missiles, and a vast entertainment empire. America is blessed with many and varied houses of worship. But what about faith? How big, and mighty, and powerful, and potent is our faith? Jesus says in Matthew 17:20, “If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed.” The size here is mind boggling in that we like to think “big.” The concept of successfulness is nearly always measured in quantity, rather than in Jesus’ term of quality. Jesus calls for a person to have a faith that will “get him through the day;” a faith sufficient for the hour; a faith that overcomes our problems; a faith that builds. JESUS ALSO TEACHES that with such a faith, “nothing shall be impossible unto you.” We often try the impossible with a faith that resembles Isaiah’s blanket and bed. “For the bed is shorter than that a man can stetch himself on it.” Often one’s ideals are never realized because of a faith that is too shallow, too weak and short. An early critic, watching the Wright brothers fly, cried out with a voice of unbelief that flying is impossible. There were critics who said men would never space walk. It is a well proven fact that when our faith is like Isaiah’s bed and blanket, we will be most successful in “never accomplishing the impossible.” These teachings of Jesus are to be used over and over again, like a good recipe. The mark of a true Christian is one who can persevere in faith, and daily live for Jesus in all our walks of life. THE GREAT APOSTLE PAUL made his

In making the announcement at the Annual Chrism Mass in S.S. IN HIS ROLE as Chancellor, Father Gettelfinger will bring his knowledge and experience to bear in assisting Archbishop O’Meara in the organization and administration of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Father Gettelfinger’s contribution to the Catholic Board of Education movement on a statewide and national level were acknowledged by the National Association of Boards

mark in life by following Christ by faith. Ephesians 5:2 says, “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and given himself for us.” To this test Christ calls us to walk by faith, even as the great saints before us have walked. America is a great land and very influential. But we continually need more stalwart Christians willing to testify, by the life they live, that Jesus is worth following. We show this by having a faith bigger than a short bed and a narrow blanket. Christians need to be big enough in faith to reach the very heights of heaven with their prayers. We need to show that God’s grace is for everyone, and is sufficient for all the demands of life. How uncomfortable to sleep on a short bed. Even more so is to live with a faith that is not equal to the needs of our day. There is no way I can live with today’s economy, except the power of God stretch my dollar to meet the needs. This makes tithing all the more necessary, for God continues to open the windows of heaven and pours out his blessings. ISAIAH WAS GREATLY disturbed by the shallowness of the people of Israel. Today’s church often is like this. I see people who are weary and cold. Their bed is too short and their blanket is too narrow. Their faith is inadequate because it is a faith in self, in ability, and in worth, rather than a living faith in Jesus Christ. Would you this day let Christ be the foundation stone of your faith, so the “gates of Hell will not prevail against you.” Do not sleep on short beds, or live with a faith inadequate for your needs. Trust Jesus Christ, and NOW.

cial priority of Roman Catholicism. The Lutherans had written to the Vatican, voicing concern that Vatican procedures used in invesitgating two Catholic theologians, the Rev. Hans Kung and Edward Schillebeeckx, could put a damper on ecumenical efforts. Cardinal Franjo Seper, head of the Vatican’s congregation on doctrine, replied in a letter disclosed at a Lutheran meeting. He gave “every assurance” of Roman Catholic “concern for the progress of our mutual efforts toward the goal of Christian unity.”
