Congress, hostage families back Carter's actions

WASHINGTON (AP) - FBI agents are shadowing Iranian diplomats to make sure they leave the United States, while President Carter’s toughened stance against Iran draws cautious reaction from the families of the American hostages and some surprisingly strong support from Congress. “It’s about time we tried to get their attention some way,” said Robert Hohman. father of Sgt. Donald R. Hohman of West Sacramento. Calif. "The president is right He has to do it.” And in Congress, Sen. George McGovern, the anti-war Democratic presidential candidate of 1972 and a frequent critic of the Carter administration, said Carter should be planning for a naval blockade or even selective air strikes if the hostages

Cuban refugees to U. S.? LIMA, Peru (AP) The Peruvian government turned to its Latin-American allies in the Andean Pact for help in finding asylum for the estimated 10,000 Cubans jamming its embassy in Havana in a desperate attempt to escape communist rule. The United States said it would take some of them if the Peruvian government would let the refugees come to Lima. But so far the Peruvians were admitting none of them because they had no definite assurances from other countries that they would take them. “Peru cannot take charge of 10,000 refugees, no country can do that individually,” said Foreign Minister Arturo Garcia said. Garcia and the foreign ministers of the other four Andean Pact nations Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela scheduled an emergency meeting in the Peruvian capital Wednesday to review the situation and discuss what might be done. In Miami’s Little Havana, thousands of Cuban-Americans marched in support of their compatriots. Leaders called for a revolution to overthrow President Fidel Castro and led chants of “War! War!” “How can we admit 150,000 Hungarian freedom fighters and 150.000 Vietnamese and Cambodians and not admit the 10,000 Cubans?” asked Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre, a native of Puerto Rico. “Either we admit them or we take down the Statue of Liberty.”

W STOP DANGEROUS CHIMNEY FIRES What’s It Like To Have A Chimney Fire? It's no fun. If it doesn't burn the house down, it will probably wreck your chimney and scare you half to death. Here's how it happens. Begin with one dirty chimney - let's say a fireplace not cleaned for a couple of years. The soot lining the chimney flue is saturated with flammable stuff called creosote. (More detail on creosote is available in any dictionary). It doesn't take much to ignite creosote • a newspaper fire sending flames up to the damper is enough. One kindled, creosote burns with joyous abandon. In a matter of seconds the fire spreads up through the flue creating a draft that only helps things along. At this point your average chimney fire begins to roar and howl, sending the occupants of the house running for cover. If you run, you'll be treated to a real fireworks show. As the I creosote fire builds and intensifies the heat melts the mortar between the brick. The red-hot mortar actually drips into the flue, only to be caught up in the tremendous updraft, and these little fire balls shoot out the chimney and onto the roof. If you're lucky, the chimney will fall apart destroying one end of the building - if you're not, this miniature volcano can bring the whole house down. However, if you stand your ground, a chimney fire can be controlled, Put out the fire in the fireplace with an extinguisher or sand. Cover the opening with a wet blanket, call the fire depart-1 ment, and hope for the best. But it should be pointed out that! having your chimney cleaned is a lot easier on the nerves than I the sand and wet blanket method. .; Call TOP HAT CHIMNEYSWEEP Clean, safe, reliable service For Free Inspection Phone 653-6970 Teresa Jackson

aren’t released. It was a grim-faced president who went on live national television Monday afternooon to say he was committed both to the release of the hostages and to “the preservation of American honor.” "Other actions may become necessary if these steps do not produce the prompt release of the hostages,’’Carter said. Neither the president nor his aides would define “prompt,” but officials said Carter does not feel obliged to await the convening of Iran’s new legislature, the group Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini has said should decide what to do with the hostages. The decision to break diplomatic relations and embargo trade was made Monday morn-

Puerto Rican FALINK terrorists dragged screaming into court

EVANSTON, 111. (AP) - Chanting, screaming and demanding to be treated as prisoners of war, 11 suspected members or associates of the Puerto Rican terrorist group FALN were pushed or carried into court Monday for a hearing on theft and weapons charges. The 11 screamed slogans seeking independence for Puerto Rico, calling themselves “freedom fighters.” One of the five women chanted, “Grand jury, FBI, U.S. justice is a lie.”

Bayh, Lugar support Iranian sanctions

By The Associated Press Both pf Indiana’s U.S. senators, Republican Richard Lugar and Democrat Birch Bayh, applauded President Carter’s latest move to gain the release of the 50 American hostages in Iran. “The time has come to let the Iranian government and the captors at the American Embassy in Tehran know that the United States is tired of fooling around, and that we mean business,” Bayh said Monday in a statement issued in South Bend. Carter broke diplomatic relations with Iran, ordered Iranian diplomats out of the country and cut off virtually all trade between the two nations. “Our government has gone beyond what could be reasonably described as ‘patient,’ and I think we should take whatever steps are necessary to secure the release of the American hostages without hurting them in the process,” Bayh said.

Outside, about 40 demonstrators paraded and chanted their support. Circuit Court Judge William A. Kelly ordered the 11 transferred to the Chicago Criminal Courts division for a hearing April 15. No pleas were entered. Armed robbery, theft and weapons charges were brought against the 11 after their arrests here Friday. Carlos Torres, No. 1 on the FBl’s most-wanted list until Friday and a reputed FALN member, denounced the hearing as “hocus-pocus” and told the judge: “I protest this hearing. lama prisoner of war. This is illegal. “I do not want to be here,” said Torres, who was dragged into court by deputies. “Turn me over to a prisoner of war camp, or let me free, unconditionally.” The FALN has claimed re-

Deutsch said he was not seeking to represent them on charges stemming from Friday’s arrest. Assistant State’s Attorney Dennis Wolter said the charges against the 11 were for violating Illinois law, not international law. An FBI spokesman, who did not want to be identified, said the suspects will be tried first on the local charges.

Lugar, in a prepared statement from his Washington office, said, “In my speech on the Senate floor 19 days ago, I pointed out that our priorities with regard to Iran have simply played themselves out, and that there would be no possible release of the American hostages without formal and direct action by the President. “I hope the President is also consulting with our allies in Western Europe and Japan to make certain they share our sense of urgency, and that they’re prepared to follow up diplomatically and in terms of their trade policy the things we are doing,” Lugar said. “Finally I would simply say that we’ve given Iran a free ride,” Lugar added. “At this point, by breaking diplomatic relations, we need to indicate to Iran that they will have to take their risks with the Soviets and others, leading to a recalculation of Iran’s self-interests.”

Savage storms kill two

By ERIC KRAMER Associated Press Writer Tornadoes, high winds and 4inch hail slashed the nation from Round Rock, Texas, to Beaver Dam, Wis., lifting one house trailer 75 feet into the air and destroying more than 100 homes. Two persons were known dead and at least 75 others injured. Businesses were damaged and a post office, library and drive-in theater were destroyed as the storms hit suburban St. Louis and several small towns in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Wisconsin. A 15-month-old baby in Beaver Dam was found face-down but unhurt in a pile of broken glass after a tornado struck a

USD A set to store corn, buy wheat

WASHINGTON (AP) - Agriculture Secretary Bob Bergland said Monday he will immediately open up the government’s grain reserve program to store corn that was destined for the Soviet Union as soon as President Carter signs new legislation. Later Monday, he also announced the Agriculture Department on Tuesday will begin offering to buy wheat directly from farmers. The direct purchases will be in addition to the existing practice of asking country elevators to submit weekly bids on wheat offered for sale to the government. Bergland said local prices that USDA will offer wheat producers will be posted at county offices of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation

Test wells detect TMI radiation

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Traces of radiation have been detected in test wells around the base of the damaged Three Mile Island nuclear reactor, but plant operators are unsure if severely contaminated water has begun to leak for the first time since the March 1979 accident. Small amounts of radioactive cobalt and tritium were found last week in water samples

Regarding the expanded use of the reserve for corn, Bergland said in an interview he expected Carter to sign the bill momentarily and that farmers might be able to begin consigning corn to the reserve by the end of this week. The bill, passed by Congress last week, includes a major provision that allows farmers who did not comply with last year’s acreage programs for

A leak from the Unit 2 reactor’s containment building where some 600,000 gallons of cooling water have stood in the basement for more than a year “has not been ruled out as the source of the radioactivity, pending further investigation,” the statement said. But a “more likely source” of the radiation is an outside water storage tank with 400,000 gallons of mildly contaminated cooling water for the undamaged but idle Unit 1 reactor. refused to rule out military force when asked about the “other actions” the president warned “may become necessary. ” The four steps Carter outlined: —A formal end to diplomatic relations. The Iranian diplomatic staff in the United States, reduced to 35 in December, was ordered to leave the country by midnight tonight. To insure that none evaded the order, Carter ordered the FBI to seal off Iran’s embassy in Washington and its consulates in Chicago, San Francisco, Houston and New York. Agents were assigned to tail the 35 registered diplomats until they left the country. —A complete trade embargo, except for food and medicine. However, Carter noted that as a practical matter even food and

The tornado flattened some houses, leaving only piles of rubble and empty shells. Most houses in northwest Florissant sustained roof damage. In central Texas, one man was killed, another was injured, 15 houses were destroyed and 12 were damaged as tornadoes struck Round Rock, Lund and Elgin. It allows farmers to store grain thus keeping it off the market for up to three years, or until market prices rise enough to trigger its release. Bergland said the plan now is to allow only additional corn into the reserve, not wheat. Instead, he said, the government will continue buying wheat to remove it from the market, including plans to begin purchasing it directly from farmers. The grain reserve program is being opened up and purchases made to offset the effects of President Carter embargoing

Commission in Washington, said “I don’t think anybody really knows yet” where the radiation is coming from. As to whether it was leaking from Unit 2, he said, “That’s a possibility, but not a probability.” He said leakage from the storage tank also was a “possibility,” but that more testing is needed. The Unit 2 reactor was badly mangled March 28, 1979, in the nation’s worst commercial nuclear accident, and officials have been concerned about the possibility of leaks. Eight test wells were drilled around the building earlier this year so technicians could check for any unusual radiation in underground water levels. “Last week, water samples

Lake in the west central part of the state capsized in high winds. Bernice and Ketchum, both northeast of Tulsa with populations of about 300 each, had property damage estimated at $2 million with four injured and as many as 40 homes demolished. Damage estimates ranged up to $1 million in the eastern Oklahoma city of Poteau where six persons were injured when a drive-in theater was flattened and a shopping center damaged by high winds and baseball-size hail. Across the state line in Arkansas, 22 persons were injured as tornadoes hit near Mayflower south of Fort Smith, and nearby Witcherville, Mansfield and Midland.

further U.S. sales of wheat, corn and other products to the Soviet Union in retaliation for its actions in Afghanistan. Carter canceled the delivery of about 17 million metric tons of U.S. grain the Soviets were expected to take in the year that will end on Sept. 30. Eight million metric tons that were provided for by an earlier agreement were exempted, however. Thus, the Soviet Union was expected to import a total of 25 million metric tons of U.S. corn and wheat in 1979-80. But as of Jan. 4 only around 21 million metric tons had actually been sold by exporters. A metric ton is about 2,205pounds and is equal to 39.4 bushels of corn or 36.7 bushels of wheat.

from three of eight wells had tritium levels about two to five times greater than normal background,” the statement said. “Although the activity for these two elements is above background levels, the concentration is about 10 percent of the Environmental Protection Agency’s drinking water guidelines.” it said. The outside storage tank, which has developed small temporary leaks in the past, is located near the Unit 2 containment building. Meanwhile, the NRC on Monday approved criteria to allow low-level radiation releases from the damaged reactor. The release levels nually are twice as stringent as those currently in effect for operating reactors. But the commission still is undecided about a controversial plan for venting 57,000 curies of Krypton 85 gas. TMI officials say the venting must be done before a $400,000 cleanup can begin. In recent months, some officials have expressed concern that water or krypton gas could leak through the walls of the Unit 2 containment building.
