People in the news Edith Bunker to be permanently stifled The terrible-but-true news is that Edith Bunker, the beloved wife of television’s Archie Bunker, is going to be killed off in the first episode of “Archie Bunker’s Place’’ next autumn. Norman Lear, the producer who made television history with the show, originally titled “All in the Family,” confirmed from Las Angeles Tuesday that the character of Edith Bunker would not be around when the show starts its llth season That's so that Archie Bunker, the show’s bigoted purveyor of misanthropy and malapropisms, “may have a new woman in his life, to go on dates and to fight with," Lear said. “It grieves me to say so, because Edith is as close to me as an older sister, but painful as it it. she must go so that Archie can have a new romantic interest." .Jean Stapleton, who originated the lovable Edith role a decade ago, grew tired of weekly series television last year and decided not to return this season as a regular character The show s title was changed, and the action was set largely in Archie’s bar Miss Stapleton’s Edith, who appeared only occasionally, was referred to as being "at home.” Carrol! O'Connor, who plays Archie, "said he wants to kill her off,” according to a source with Norman Lear’s Tandem Productions. "Jean doesn't want to return to do a show in which she passes away.” Lear said, “so next year Archie Carroll O’Connor will probably return from a long trip, and the viewer will learn Edith died.” • IRVING, Texas (AP) The world didn’t end Tuesday, but modern-day prophet Willie Day Smith, who said he and millions of other Christians would vanish and be taken to heaven that day, could not be found. The occasion was the Christian “rapture,” which in the lore of Bible prophecy is the time when the faithful are summoned to heaven to be with Jesus Christ. It wasn’t known whether Smith was summoned anywhere, but on Tuesday reporters visiting his home in this Dallas suburb found locked doors, drawn shades and two cars in the driveway. No one answered knocks at the door and the reporters could not determine whether he was at home. “It’s interesting that April 1 is April Fools Day and the Bible talks about being fools for Christ,” said Smith, 47. shortly before his target date. “The census will be taken April 1. It would be interesting to see what takes place when all those people have disappeared.” Smith broke with his Southern Baptist background to become a non-denominationalist proclaimer of the end. His message is spread on widely distributed tape cassettes, in print and on daily broadcasts carried on 30 stations across the country. ~ “Things are coming to an end,” he said. “Time is very short. We’re in the final countdown.” • WILMINGTON. Ohio (AP) - Hugh Heiland, drama professor at Wilmington College, had an old friend drop by for his birthday party. The surprise guest Monday night was Gary Sandy, a star of CBS’ “WKRP In Cincinnati” and one of Heiiand’s former students. About 200 people gathered to watch the TV show in which Sandy was to wear a Wilmington College T-shirt. About 10 minutes before the show began, Sandy walked into the room. “I was really excited that I thought I could pull it off,” Sandy said of the surprise visit. “I wanted to wait until after the show, but I just couldn’t wait.” • KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Boxer John Tate, beaten by Mike Weaver in their World Boxing Assocition heavyweight title fight, took it on the chin again a few hours later. When Tate and his manager, Ace Miller, returned home after the fight Monday night, they found burglars had stolen at least $20,000 in jewelry belonging to Tate and the Miller family. A pistol and a shotgun also were taken, police said. Tate is living with the Millers while his home is being remodeled, officers said.

The picture has been his project from beginning to end, and he wanted authenticity in everything the costumes, the buildings, the faces; he wanted it to have the look of the old West, and he succeeded. “He finally agreed to see me, and I was instructed to come to the interview without makeup or hair styling. As soon as we started talking, we seemed to have a mutual feeling for the character of the schoolteacher; that she should not be outwardly beautiful but her attractiveness should come trom something inside her.” Miss Evans, who is accustomed to glamorous roles, admitted she became "a little nervous” when McQueen decreed that she qualified; McQueen, who served as executive producer as well as star, had her wear a gold tooth, her hair in a bun. "And he insisted that I have big, bulky clothes,” she said. “It’s not that the schoolteacher is fat; she wears the clothes of a woman of those times. I do have a tank scene; but even then 1 wear a camisole and bloomers.”
