'Look' forward Believing isn't always seeing

By Rev. ALLAN HARLAN Rector, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church It’s interesting how we use words (correctly and incorrectly). Take the word “look.” At first thought it comes to us as seeing. It also means to show, to reveal, "looking one’s age." for example. A look may examine, scrutinize. We may use the word to express appearance as to how one dresses. Synonyms for look might be glance, sight, appearance, aspect, air. surprise, etc. But we all know that looks are revealing. They can show the inner attitude on the outside, and what a person sees on the outside can affect what goes on inside! WE TALK OF “looking up" which means being positive; that things will get better than they presently are. We may look at the sky for signs of weather and see sunshine or a tornado. We look into our lives as well as out of them This seems to us to be a very simple act, but upon examination it’s a very complicated procedure physically and mentally, to look To look at one’s thoughts can be very perplexing, frequently deceiving and sometimes devastating. While we want the positive attitude of looking up. we can’t live always this way. A person who only looks up is going to stumble, or fall badly. We must look down in life also. We have to be aware of the gutter, the steps and other downward dangers. Life is a process of looking up and down. This calls for judgment and experience. We must be aware of both the good and the bad. There are those who tend to look only downward. This can be fatal. If one looks downward too much in life, depression and doom set in. FEW PEOPLE ENJOY the crepe-hangers, the pessimists, the doomsayers! While we must look up and look down in life we must also look forward. This enables us to see both the up and the down in perspective. We must look forward if we are to anticipate progress and reach our destination. The optician who examines you for glasses will also test your peripheral vision, that is, how well you see from side to side, the area outside the direct

line of vision. He tests this while telling you to look straight ahead. How well we look at life will pretty well tell where we are in life, if we can be honest. Looking up demands that we be realistic. Looking downward demands that we be aware, alert. Looking forward demands that we advance in life, achieving goals, growing in fullness and awareness with accomplishment. We are aided in this by our peripheral vision of judgment. Observe the ways and uses of looking and seeing in the Bible. Holy Week will soon be upon us. Jesus was continually facing those who looked down, some who looked up, and he mainly looked forward To what? Fulfilling his own purpose in life. “He set his face steadfastly toward Jerusalem.” Why? To die? Yes, of all things. He knew that he was going to die. But Jesus looked beyond death to resurrection. He looked to heaven from whence he came to be with the Father. To bring salvation! YOU AND I MUST LOOK into his death as well as his earthly life and in so doing we cover all aspects of looking up, looking down, looking forward. Sometimes the looking isn’t clear but cloudy. In darkness we can’t see at all. Jesus experienced this, too. Nevertheless he accomplished his goal. We can accomplish ours also. Travel with him this next week in the last few days of his life and perhaps we shall learn more, how better to look up. to look down, and to look forward.
