People in the news Song Girls don't think they're sexy INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Although millions of people who saw them perform might disagree, Julie Havek says she and the six other members of the UCLA Song Girls don't think they are being sexy. Aside from basketball, the Song Girls have been the most popular form of entertainment at the NCAA finals in Market Square Arena Their kicking, strutting and shaking kept fans in the arena glued to their seats at halftime and probably had folks at home sticking by the television instead of running to the refrigerator. "1 watched the girls dance and I don’t think they’re trying to be sexy,” said Havek, 19, a sophomore from LaCanada, Calif. “I think we re trying to be wholesome." The Song Girls wear regular cheerleading uniforms while the game is being played. But at halftime, the uniforms are discarded in favor of Rruin Blue shorts and gold, V-necked 1 ‘ leotard tops. They have 15 routines to choose from, plus "a couple of ■ others that we made up.” Havek said. The competition to become a Song Girl is stiff The seven were chosen from 150 who tried out and next month, tryouts begin for next year’s squad Havek. who turned down an offer to pose in Playboy magazine, said she enjoys the Song Girl activities, but added her main interests are her dental studies and modeling. She carries a B-plus grade average in pre-dentistry. “I had braces when I was younger and I really liked my orthodonist, so I decided to be an orthodonist,” she added, flashing a bright smile that would make any dentist happy. Havek admitted the Song Girl outfits might be "kind of revealing," but added they weren’t the first choice of the • squad. “We didn't get our first choice because the university didn’t have enough money.” she said. “We had the shorts from summer football and about $lB left, so we bought the - tops. “We tried them out at a game and people seemed to like it. so we tried them at another game. They seemed to go over, so we kept them.” About that request from Playboy, Havek said it was -. made before she became a Song Girl. ■; “If I wanted to go into modeling as a career. I didn’t - ‘ think it would be good.” she said. "After I became a Song ■I Girl. I knew I wouldn’t have been able to do it.” • •; Sen. William Proxmire apologized in the Senate Monday >; to a research scientist who had sued the Wisconsin m Democrat for libel after he was named in one of Prox- ; mire’s Golden Fleece Awards. * As part of an out-of-court settlement to the scientist. Dr. Ronald R. Hutchinson, who had taken his $8 million case to the United States Supreme Court. Proxmire must pay . SIO,OOO of his own money, plus court costs of $5,132. which ; will be paid by the Senate, according to Proxmire’s administrative assistant, Howard Shuman. The awards are announced monthly by Proxmire for ; what he considers the most ridiculous wastes of taxpayers’ money. He presented it to Hutchinson in 1975 for a $500,000 ; study on aggression in monkeys, saying the.scientist ' "made a fortune from his monkeys.” ; Monday he said he wished to “clarify” some of his ■.' statements on the research. Although the amount of the - federal expenditure was large, he said, “the fact is that Dr. ■I Hutchinson did not make a personal fortune.” He added that the research had been defended as meritorious by a ■ . number of people. A Senate Rules Committee aide said Proxmire’s legal defense cost the taxpayers $124,351. • NEW YORK (AP) Teenage fans and old folks alike - gathered to gape and gasp at what they thought was actor Sylvester Stallone dangling above the East River. Uniform proofs of purchase?
By MARTIN SLOANE r Dear Supermarket Shopper -- Why don’t aJEmanufaeturers adopt a similar proof of purchase 9 Then we shoppers wouldn’t have to go to all the inconvenience of serving hundreds of squashed boxes, packages and bags. * J have a large house with plenty of room, but it is still a messy job. I pit the shoppers who must keep their proofs in an apartment or mobile home. -- Mary S,, Bavport, NX * Pear Mary -- Manufacturers use different proofs of purchase for several nelsons. Some stay with a proof they have traditionally asked for, such as a box top. * A net-weight statement may be required because the refund offer is limited to a product of a specific size. •Some manufacturers want you to be aware of how nutritious their product is, so they ask you to cut out the nutritioninformation panel * OTHERS WANT YOU to remember their trademark, so they ask you to cut out the picture of the baby from Charmin or the lumberjack from Brawny. * This hodgepodge of required proofs isn’t likely to change soon, although some manufacturers have recognized the confusion that often results. Shoppers cut out fit* "!»redient statement instead of the dutrition information panel, for example. Or they send t he wrong end-flap.
