Boston beans Pacers with spot play for Bullets

By ALEXSACHARE AP Sports Writer Lawrence Boston is lucky and he knows it. He’s been given a second chance, and he’s vowed to make the most of it. Boston, a 6-foot-8 forward from Maryland, was cut by Washington prior to last season. But with Mitch Kupchak unable to contribute because of injury. Boston was summoned by the Bullets for a 10-dav emergency trial. “We liked him when we had him before." said Washington [Coach Dick Motta, “but there was just no room for him then. He can help us if he gives us five or six minutes a half ." Boston did just that on Sunday. He scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in 18 solid minutes, helping the Bullets to 118-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers. The win was the fifth in the last six games for the Bullets, who are making a late drive toward their 12th consecutive playoff berth. Bucks 101, Clippers 98 Milwaukee posted its fifth victory in a row and 11th in 13 games since obtaining center Bob Lanier, rallying in the fourth quarter to overtake San Diego. Reserve Junior Bridgeman led the Bucks with 25 points and put Milwaukee ahead to stay 97-96 with a three-point play with 2:27 to play.^

Polls don't decide champion Bulldogs have talent, but need luck

Bv HANK LOWENKRON AP Sports Writer Jack Ford believes the New Albany Bulldogs can fulfill his dream of leading a state championship basketball team which he’s been chasing in 19 years of coaching, but says it will take some luck along the way. “I’ve coached in all corners of Indiana,” said Ford in a weekend telephone interview. “And I know there are several good basketball teams around that can win the state championship. It takes a little luck to do that.. .and some talent. “I believe we have the talent,” he said. Ford’s team is one of four heading into the 1980 Sectionals with a perfect record. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 2 in the latest Associated Press poll behind undefeated Anderson Highland. No. 3 Argos, which reached

Blazers 110, Bulls 107 Portland moved one game ahead of San Diego in the race for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference on rookie Calvin Natt’s three-point play with five seconds remaining. Chicago guard Rickey Sobers had tied the game at 107-107 with a jumper from the top of the key with 28 seconds left. But Natt drove from the free throw line, scored, was fouled by Bulls center Artis Gilmore and made a free throw for the final margin. Natt led all scorers with 31 points. Sonics 103, Jazz 91 Seattle moved back into first place in the Pacific Division, one-half game ahead of Los Angeles, by beating Utah behind Gus Williams’ 28 points. The Sonics led 58-45 at the half and by as many as 23 points in the third quarter. Suns 123, Lakers 115 Phoenix led by as many as 21 points in the final period in beating Los Angeles behind 25 points by Paul Westphal. The Suns effectively used three centers, Alvan Adams, Rich Kelley and Jeff Cook, to neutralize Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Lakers. the Final Four last year, and No. 15 Whitko are the other undefeated clubs. “We have good balance, good size and are good shooters,” said Ford, who saw his team lose the No. 1 spot earlier this season. “At first we were unhappy about being dropped," Ford said. “But, we’ve forgotten about that now. Polls are funny, but they don’t decide what happens when the game is played.” Ford has never coached a team that reached the Final Four. His highest advance in the tournament was to the Sweet Sixteen when he was at Boonville. “This is the first time our school has ever gone undefeated in regular season play. Our success didn’t start when we began preseason practice, however. It started at the end of last year.

Erving, who did not play the fourth quarter, shot 14-for-16 from the field and 11-for-ll from the foul line. Celtics 118, Pistons 115 Larry Bird led Boston with 41 points, but the Celtics needed baskets by Dave Cowens and M.L. Carr in the final 14 seconds to deal Detroit its 16th loss in 17 games. Bird had 14 points in the fourth quarter as Boston won its sixth in a row. Hawks 100, Nuggets 93 Atlanta outscored Denver 14-4 in the final 5:32 to win its third in a row. Eddie Johnson led the Hawks with 31 points, including the last 12, and Wayne Rollins grabbed 22 rebounds. Cavs 123, Spurs 119 Mike Mitchell scored 35 points, including four in the last 28 seconds, as Cleveland outscored San Antonio 15-6 down the stretch to win. “Our kids worked hard in the summer practicing on outdoor courts and developing their body’s with weight training. They’ve reaped some of the rewards... but they’ve set high goals.” New Albany completed its regular season with a 67-61 victory over Seymour and Ford says his team may have been a little “overconfident”. “It was a special night,” he said. “We started five seniors since it was our last regular season game.” That meant 6-foot-8 Dave Bennett and Mark Moody, who usually start, were on the bench. They remained there for 3M> minutes as the Bulldogs fell behind 12-6 and Ford decided it was time to make a move. “I might have been in for some criticism for starting the five seniors,” Ford said. “But if I had to do it all over. I’d do it

Eichelberger uses wind to his advantage in Bay Hill Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) say the wind was a factor,” said Dave Eichelberger after battling 45 mph gusts and a windchill factor of about 12 degrees to win the $300,000 Bay Hill Classic by 3 strokes over Leonard Thompson. “But I feel like I have a lot better chance in the wind than under ideal conditions,” added the 36-year-old Eichelberger, whose only previous victories in a 12-year pro career had been the Greater Milwaukee Open twice. Eichelberger had a 3-over-par 74 Sunday for a 72-hole total of 279. Thompson also toured the wind-blown course in 74 and finished at 282.

Harding plays Fort Wayne Elmhurst in the second game. The firing starts at 16 of the other 63 sectional sites on Tuesday with Highland opening against Alexandria in a strong Anderson Sectional which also includes No. 8 Anderson Madison Heights and No. 9 Anderson.

Eichelberger led the last three rounds of the weatherplagued tournament played over Arnold Palmer’s home course, a 7,119-yard layout which plays at par 71. Heavy rains Saturday forced Eichelberger and Thompson and 28 other players to suspend play in the middle of the third round. They were on the course at 8 a.m. Sunday to conclude their 54 holes before going into the final 18. “The main thing I was trying to do is just hit par on every hole,” said the winner, flashing a big smile. Thompson, 33, also a double winner, plays out of Bay Hill and said he figured he lost the

However, five setbacks were delivered by teams ranked in the Top 10 the three Anderson teams, N 0.4 Marion and N 0.7 Indianapolis Broad Ripple. “Bennett is our leading scorer with an 18 point average,” Ford said. “But three of our other players are also averaging in double figures. We’ve got some talented individuals here and we’ve shot about 55 percent from the field for the season.” Richie Johnson, Phil Benninger and Jeff Stoops have combined with Bennett and Moody to spark the perfect season. Size helps produce that potential. Three starters are 6-8 and a fourth is 6-5. And Ford has two 6-6 players available on the bench.

Worry Clinic By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.O.

Clark warns us against being faithless to our dead soldiers, as well as those dedicated patriots in 1776, who gave us this wonderful Republic. When good men don’t vote, evil triumphs! CASE U-625: Clark J., aged 31, is an insurance salesman. “Dr. Crane,” he began, “I have noticed that many of the most severe critics of our government are the very ones who don’t go to the polls and vote. “In fact, I have a number of physicians and dentists among my clients who are often as disinterested in trying to improve our government as are the poor and ignorant who can hardly read. “Shouldn’t all educated people certainly go to the polls to insure this remarkable Republic, which is still the mecca for all freedom loving folks from other nations?” REMEMBER ARCHIMEDES? Archimedes was one of the greatest scientists of all time. He discovered the way to find out if the king’s crown was pure gold or made of an alloy. And he accomplished this by learning that we can identify substances by what is called their “Specific Gravity”. Look up the word “gold” in Webster’s dictionary and you will find that its specific gravity is 19.3, whereas lead has 11.34 as its sp. gr. So gold is thus very much heavier than lead. And specific gravity is found by weighing a nugget of gold or any other substance; then comparing its weight with a similar volume of distilled water! Thus, by weighing the king’s crown and then finding out how much water volume it displaced, he quickly learned if the crown was pure gold vs. an alloy. Alas, Archimedes was* so fascinated by such scientific puzzles that he apparently paid little attention to the political life around him. For legend reports that the foreign troops invaded his city and killed him in his own bathtub! And nowadays many modem scientists, as well as farmer!, retail merchants, teachers, preachers and many grumbjMg housewives who resent the high inflation of grocery prices, sti|l make no effort to register for voting! a*' Yet they are the very ones who should protect od.r freedoms, for the illiterates in the large cities are herded into the polling places to elect wastrel Congressmen, life those who gave away our Panama Canal and still squander bullions on ungrateful foreign nations. “All that is necessary for triumph of evil,” warned Edmund Burke, “is that good men do nothing!” So our rapid descent into chaos and national bankruptcy is largely due to the 40 °0 of our citizens who don’t show enough patriotism to vote on election day.
