Abby: Unconfined confinement
DEAR ABBY: I have never needed advice so badly in my life, and you are the only one I can turn to. My married daughter is pregnant with her second child and is planning to have a natural childbirth this time. She and her husband have been going for "lessons." It sounds very far out to me, but if that's their choice, it s all right with me. But, Abby, she plans to have her 3-year-old son watch the delivery! Her husband will be present at the birth, and she also has invited her 19 year-old unmarried sister to witness the the whole business. Lord, help me! I had all 1 could do to keep from get ting hysterical when she told me this. Abby, do you think a 3 year old child can handle something like this? Even a 19 year old unmarried girl might not be able to handle il. I get sick at the thought of it. We are conservative people, and I have raised my daughters to be modest, so this is a terrible shock to me. What do you think of this whole business? APPALLED IN K.C. DEAR APPALLED: There is no better way to learn about the miracle of life than to witness childbirth. I see nothing shocking or immodest about it. And a 3-year-old child should find it a fascinating and educational experience. DEAR ABBY: Repiemher me? I'm Abe Puehkoff (age 83) from Brooklyn. Ever since my name appeared in your
Heloise:
DEAR HELOISE: I have read your column for a number of years and have always enjoyed it. 1 recently moved into my own apartment and so I’ve started dipping out your column. 1 now have quite a big stack and, frankly, I’m not quite sure what to do with them! I could put each hint on a 3 x 3 index card, but I’m not sure how to file them. Gould you possibly give me some-help here? Thanks. - A Kansas Reader * * * There are several ways to keep these clippings handy. So 1 will trv to clue you in on a few. First, the one you mentioned, on 3x5 index cards. You said you can’t decide how to file them. You can file them under categories, such as
Filing hints for easy reference
"cooking,” "cleaning,” “kitchen,” etc. We file ours alphabetically, “nylon net” under “N” “potatoes” under “P,” etc. This makes them easy to find. Especially since you will be the one to decide where to file them. You could also paste the hints on pages in a loose leaf binder. Buy those clear plastic tabs, list the category on each tab and paste it on a divider. This will make it easier to readily find the hint you are looking for. Some readers say they file the hints in a catalog or an old telephone book. Then all you would have to buy are the plastic tabs. Just paste the hints on the pages of the book a good way to save a few pennies. Remember “A penny saved,

column last summer, I've had letters and phone calls from all over the country. How’s this for a story? When I was a 27-year-oid bachelor, a pretty girl caught my eye. I called her for a date, but she played hard to get, so that ended that. Well, last Saturday my phone rang, and this very same lady (only 56 years later) said, "Is this Abe Puehkoff?” I said, “Yes, that's me." When she told me who she was, I nearly fainted. Then she said, "I say your name in Dear Abby’s column. I’ve been a widow for 20 years. How would you like to take me out to lunch?" 1 very politely said, “It's not good for us to see each other so often." Then 1 added, “Besides, with God’s help, my wife and I will celebrate our 50th this June.” ABEPIJCHKOFF DEAR ABE: Thanks for another day-brightener. And mazeltov! Getting married? Whether you want a formal church wedding or a simple do-your-own-thing ceremony, get Abby’s new booklet, “How to Have a Lovely Wedding.” Send $1 and a long, stamped <2B cents) self-addressed envelope to Abby: 132 Lasky Drive, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90212.
is a penny made." Heloise # * > DEAR HELOISE: After baking acorn squash, cut side down on a foil-lined cookie sheet, I turned them and added butter and brown sugar and baked another half hour. However, it never failed that when I took them out to serve, 1 spilled half of the filling because the squash tipped over. So, 1 started putting each half in a large mouth salad dressing lid before adding the filling. No more tipping, as the squash sits securely in the lids. Love your column and hope this helps someone avoid burnt fingers and spilled filling. Lee Doubler

Be informed about vitamins
Bv BETTY H. SENDMEYER Extension Home Economist Things to think about before buying vitamin or vitamin-mineral pills Vitamin and vitamin-mineral pills don't make up for a poor diet. Vitamin and vitamin-mineral pills only have about eight to 20 of the nearly 50 nutrients your body needs for good health. The only way you can get all 50 nutrients is to eat a variety of food. Food has advantages that vitamin and vitamin-mineral pills can’t match. A balanced diet gives you all the nutrients you need for good health. Food also gives you bulk to aid in digestion and elimination. And eating food is much more satisfying to most people than taking a pill! If you buy vitamin or vitamin-mineral pills, read the label to find out what you are getting. Not all vitamin or vitaminmineral pills contains the same things. For instance, vitamin pills contain only vitamins; vitamin-mineral pills have both vitamins and minerals in them. Some pills contain high dosages of vitamins, much more than the Recommended Daily Allowance. Look at the label Compare labels. Know what you are paying for. If you buy vitamin or vitamin-mineral pills, you might as well buy the cheapest, all other things being equal. The government has regulations that cover the manufacture and labeling of vitamin and vitamin-mineral pills. All vitamin and vitaminmineral pills on the market must meet the minimum standards set by law, including an accurate listing of ingredients on the
