Vitamin C no proven cure-all
By G. Timothy Johnson. M.D. Dear Dr. Johnson: I keep hearing that vitamin C cures everything. What’s the true story? -- Patricia H., Hartford. Conn. Dear Patricia: There is no doubt that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient. If you don’t get enough, the result -- over a long time - is a disease called scurvy. But beyond that, our knowledge is uncertain There are those who claim huge doses of vitamin C can cure, or at least alleviate, the common cold. .Some also claim that it’s effective against cancer and heart disease, plus a whole list of other ailments. As far as I know, there have been no rigidly controlled tests to document these claims. Indeed, there is some rather persuasive evidence that vitamin C is not truly effective in these conditions. My inclination is to avoid huge doses of anything until there’s solid proof of its effectiveness. Dear Dr. Johnson: I’ve heard that many people, while skiing, break their legs in a strange way, somehow related to the shape of the boot. Is that true? - Kenneth J . Sebastopol, Calif Dear Kenneth: There have been reports that more people are suffering what we call ‘‘spiral fractures” of the legs. Rather than being simple breaks, these fractures are the result of a severe twisting motion I don't think it has been documented that the fractures
are caused by new boots, but it has been suggested that the newer boots, which extend much farther up the legs than the older ones, may tend to shift the breaking point higher up. The most important factor is to be sure your ski bindings allow the boot to slip off the ski when a twisting becomes too severe. Dear Readers: Those of you fortunate enough to take winter vacations in southern climates should remember to be careful about sunburn. After you’ve B.J. Becker

been locked away in winter clothing for several months, it’s not wise to over-expose your skin. I realize you may not have much time to work on your tan, but you should still ease yourself into it slowly. There’s no sense in spoiling your whole vacation by making yourself uncomfortable with sunburn. In addition, we’re beginning to learn that the idea of a “healthy tan” is a bit of a myth. There seems to be a clear correlation between the dangerous ultra-violet light
Olympiad. The final contract was the same at both tables three notrump played by South but the outcome was altogether different. At the first table, where Giorgio Belladonna was declarer for Italy, West led the ten of hearts. Declarer won in dummy with the queen, led the queen of diamonds which held, then the jack of diamonds which lost to West’s king. West shifted to the ten of spades and the Taiwanese East, overly impressed by his spade holding, signaled with the seven. It was a fatal error. Belladonna won the spade with the king and ran ten tricks for a score of 430 points. Had East taken the ten of spades with the ace and returned a heart, Belladonna would have gone down two. East should have realized from declarer’s approach to the play leading diamonds instead of clubs that South

almost surely had the A-K-x of clubs. , At the second table, after the same bidding, West led the nine of hearts against three notrump. The Taiwanese declarer promptly let the cat out of the bag when he won the heart lead in dummy with the queen, cashed five club tricks, and then finessed the queen of diamonds. This series of plays enabled East to signal possession of the ace of spades at the same time as it allowed West to discard two low spades and a low diamond, thus emphasizing that West’s sole interest was in encouraging a heart return. Accordingly, upon winning the diamond queen with the king, the Italian West led the ten of spades to his partner’s ace, got a heart return, and the result was that the Taiwanese declarer went down two for a team loss of 530 points.
