South Putnam wrestling sectional champion 23 county wrestlers advance

Eagles add sectional to laurels

South Putnam proved that winning the Putnam County Wrestling title earlier was not a fluke. The Eagles took the Green-castle-IHSAA wrestling sectional Saturday, defeating North Putnam, Cloverdale, Greencastle and Rockville for the title. SOUTH PUTNAM finished with 148 points. North Putnam and Cloverdale tied at 119' 2 points, Greencastle had 108 and Rockville points. North Putnam and Greencastle were each docked a penalty point during the tournament as Cougar coach Gene Roe and Tiger Cub coach Dan Layton were penalized for arguing with an official In all 23 Putnam County wrestlers advanced to the Southmont regional set for Saturday. The first and second place wrestlers in each weight class advance. First places did not decide the sectional champion. South Putnam won only two weight class champions, 98 pounds and 177 pounds. North Putnam, Cloverdale, and Rockville each took three firsts and Greencastle one. South Putnam’s David Parker won the 98-pound class with one of only two pins during

Technical foul seals South Putnam's 12th loss

By KIETH PUCKETT Banner-Graphic Sports Writer “I lost the ball game. This one was my fault.” That was South Putnam coach Bill Merkel’s reaction just moments after his Eagles dropped a 80-73 loss to tho Rosedale Hotshots Saturday night. Merkel was upset with himself because he drew a technical foul with 2:25 in the game. At that point; the Eagles had narrowed a 15-point deficit to three points, 72-69. But Rosedale’s Rick Cuthbertson hit four „ consecutive free throws-two from a foul by Troy Arnold and two from the technical-to give Rosedale their eventual seven point winning margin. ALTHOUGH THE technical foul was the final nail in the Eagle’s coffin, South Putnam did itself almost irreparable damage with a terrible third quarter. In one third quarter

stretch, the Hotshots outscored South Putnam 16-4 to take control of the game. The first half of the game was an entirely different story, though, as both teams lit up the scoreboard with outstanding plav. Rosedale fired 19-34 from the field in the first half. Lee Hutson scored 16 points and Cuthbertson added 10. as the Hotshots exploded for a 42 points first half. The Eagles almost matched Rosedale shot for shot in the first half, as they hit 56 per cent

Coach Lou Carnesecca after watching his ninth-ranked team lose a 76-71 decision to the sev-enth-ranked Cardinals Sunday in a nationally televised game. “We did very little right. When we watch the films tomorrow, I know we’ll be unhappy. ” Carnesecca’s players will no doubt kick themselves over the way they let Darrell Griffith and Wiley Brown slip through

Troy McMurty of Rockville upped his season record to 12-7 by winning the 112 pound class by 7-5 decision over South Putnam’s Pat Havey. The Eagle led 3-2 going into the final period of the title match, but McMurtry came up with five points to Havey’s two in the deciding period. Cloverdale’s Marcel Gaddish finished third by beating North Putnam’s David Winnings. JEFF SMITH WON the 119pound class for North Putnam in one of the closest championship matches of the day. Smith slipped by South Put nam’s Chris Renihan 14-13. Smith led 10-3 after the first period, but Renihan outscored him 10-4 in the last two periods, closing within a point. Tod Sheddron of Cloverdale finished third with a victory over Greencastle’s Jon Skinner David Stout took the 126 pound class by 5-4 decision over Greencastle’s Dave Dewsnap. Stout took his one point advantage in the second period and neither wrestler scored in the third period. Rockville’s Troy Ave finished third, beating North Putnam’s Mike Joyce. Dave Johnson won a 9-2 decision over South Putnam’s Matt Worthington to give Greencastle the 132-pound title.

from the field, 18-32. with a total team effort. CHUCK SEARS and Troy Arnold hit the open man in the Eagle offense, as Chris Stitzle and Steve Renner both scored 10 first half points. The Eagles trailed the Hotshots by just three, 42-39, at theljalf. The Eagles hit a dry spell at the outset of the second half. Part of the reason for South Putnam’s inability to score was the fact that Rosedale’s zone became more conscious of Stitzle’s accuracy from 15-feet. Rosedale’s defense gave it a 5843 lead with 3:31 left in the third quarter. But the Eagles turned things around with some good man-to-man defense and increased tempo offensively Sears went on a rampage late in the third quarter and early in the fourth. The guard shot 8-9 from the field with the help of some hustling play of Johnny

for a basketfull of inside field goals. As Griffith emphasized after scoring 23 points: “Our offense is designed to shoot layups. If we can’t carry on this offense, we find ourselves sitting on the bench and holding Coach (Denny) Crum’s hand.” The loss stopped a 17-game St. John’s winning streak the second longest in the nation.

Johnson scored four points during the first period and never let up. Cloverdale’s Jeff Yearv finished third with a victory over North Putnam’s Bill Smith. THE FIRST UPSET of the day came at 138-pounds when second seeded Gregg McMurtry won the title over unseeded Brad Mendenhall of South Putnam by 9-4 decision. Mendenhall got into the championship match by upsetting top seeded Brian Benson of Greencastle. Benson was injured prior to the WCC tournament in a meet with Plainfield, but was seeded number one with a 5-4-2 record. Mendenhall entered the tournament with a 7-9 record. Mike Hughes of Cloverdale finished third with a victory over North Putnam’s Tracy Wheeler. Gregg Board of Rockville was an upset winner of the 145pound class. Board defeated top seeded Dennis Padgett of Cloverdale, who was substituted for Rob Keefer in the event. Board, who was unseeded, won the event with a first period pin over North Putnam’s Gene Winnings. The Cougar wrestler was a mild upset winner in the semi-final match over second seeded Richard Phillips of South Put-

Briones. Briones came off the bench to add six points, but his passing against the Hotshot’s zone nearly always found the open man. An offenseive rebound basket by Briones cut the lead to five points, 72-67. with 2:32 left. Then Sears added a running one-hander to cut the margin to three points, 72-69, with 2:25 left to play.

nam. Phillips finished third with a win over Charlie Gilmer of Greencastle. Matt Brown came from behind in the fourth period to win the 155-pound class title for North Putnam. Steve Smith of South Putnam led 6-5 going into the final period of the match, but Brown outscored him 4-1 in the last period of the title. Jeff McClane of Cloverdale finished third by victory over Greencastle’s Mark Miller TROY BRYAN successfully defended his 167 pound class title with a 4-0 decision over South Putnam’s Mike Owens Bryan entered the sectional w-ith a 16-1 record and Owens 144 with three of his four losses coming to Brown this season. Dan Bridge of Rockville finished third, beating Cloverdale’s Randy Pittman. Donn Brouhard won the 185pound class by 6-1 decision over the only other entry in the class. Dale Lawler of North Putnam. Greencastle’s Mark Jackson came through with the only other pin of the championships in the heavy weight class during the second period over Cloverdale’s Tom Hacker. Cloverdale’s Duane Hubbard finished third with a victory over North Putnam’s Calvin Arnold.

AT THAT POINT, Cuthbertson added his rally-killing free throws. The Eagles outscored Rosedale from the field, 35 field goals to 31, but were outscored 18-3 from the line The Hotshots hit a blazing 55 per cent from the field, while South Putnam hit a good 51 per cent. Rosedale’s Hutson led all
