Bibbs sets record

Bibbs shows he can do it all with 31 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Jeff Bibbs became DePauw University’s all-time leading scorer just four minutes into the second half Monday night and led the Tigers to a 100-78 victory over visiting Roosevelt University. Bibbs scored 14 points in the first half, six in the closing minute when the Tigers assumed a commanding 46-JO halftime lead over the Lakers. ON HIS THIRD shot from the floor in the second half. Bibbs got the record The final shot was an 18-foot, baseline jumper that fans have seen the Indianapolis Pike High School produce nail down with such regularity, almost like a layup. When it was announced that Bibbs scored 31 points in the game that moved him ahead of Bob Schrier on the all-time scoring list, coach Page Cotton wds one of the most surprised people in Bowman Gym “I didn't know' he had 31 points. \Vhen they announced it at the end I was really surprised.” coach Cotton said. “He gets his points so effortlessly.” Cotton pointed out that because of Bibbs’ all-around game, one doesn’t notice the scoring as much. “He’s a total team player and I think the only reason he’s scoring is because the team is looking for him to score. I mean if he were with another team, in another role, he would probably be the leading assist man or even steals. He can do everything and he showed that tonight.”

JEFF BIBBS finished his record setting game with 31 points on 15 of 26 shooting from the floor and 1-1 at the free throw line. He pulled down 11 rebounds, had five assists and stole the ball twice. It was his game. DePauw never trailed in the contest and never allowed the 810 Inkers inside 20 points after reaching the bulge in the second half. Matt Holliday, who scored 15 points on 7-12 shots from the floor after missing five straight at one point and coming back to hit six straight, opened DePauw’s attack. Freshman Tom Sevier, making his second start for the Tigers canned a pair of free throws that moved DePauw into the lead for good, 4-2, not quite two minutes into the game. Bibbs’ first bucket of the night came at the 17:25 mark of the first half and gave DePauw an 8-2 lead. With Kirk Kitzinger, Bo McDougal and Sevier doing a job on the offensive and defen-

sive boards, the Tigers rocketed to a 16-8 lead when Bibbs hit his second shot of the night. BIBBS YANKED OFF a board with 3:50 left in the half and got a break going that ended with a Holliday layup. But with 34 seconds left in the half. Bibbs had just eight of his needed 18 points. Suddenly the Tiger roared, sending a wave of excitement and terror through the ancient rafters of Bowman Gym. Holliday stole the ball and hit Bibbs with a pass at the 1:40 mark. Then with 34 seconds left the senior put nothing but net around the ball, as it passed through the net. It was Kitzinger’s steal that led to the next Bibbs bucket and finally just as the last second showed on the clock. Bibbs stole the ball, dribbled halfway down court and nailed his 14th point of the night and a 46-30 halftime lead. Evervt ime DePauw went on the attack in the opening minutes of the second half, Bowman Gym came alive with one chant-Bibbs. Bibbs, Bibbs. A minute into the second half reserve Tim Mundy stole the ball and hit the open Bibbs for a baseline jumping, leaving just one bucket ahead of him. In the next two minutes Bibbs passed up two open shots from 15 to 18 feet out and picked up a couple of quick assists to Kitzinger and missed his second shot of the half. But with 15:59 showing on the clock DePauw had a new all-time leading scorer, as the 61st DePauw

points of the night passed through the net and the 1,416 th point of Bibbs’ three and a half year career. DePAUW University president Dr. Richard Rosser presented the game ball to Bibbs, as the game was stopped with fans cheering, standing in recognition of DePauw’s new king of court. Not only was there hugging and hand shaking from members of his own team, but the entire Roosevelt squad congratulated Bibbs and it was the first time they had ever seen him play. Bibbs’ bucket put DePauw in a 22-point, 61-39 lead. A Kitzinger basket, off a Bibbs assist, moved the margin to 24 points and a Holliday free throw gave DePauw its biggest lead of the night at 25 points with just over 13 minutes left in the contest . Coach Cotton used his entire bench. As starters were pulled from the game they would turn and chant for 100. The “century man” turned out to be 6-5 freshman Joe Dixon with only 31 seconds remaining in the contest. Cotton pulled Bibbs from the game with 3:36 left in the contest, making him the last starter to leave the floor and giving every member of the Tiger team an opportunity to play in the record setting game with the 6-3 guard-forward. BIBBS’ 31 point night overshadowed an outstanding performance by 6-7 forward Kirk Kitzinger. The Northfield, 111., native scored 27 points, the second best of his four year career at DePauw, and pulled down a team high 12 rebounds. Matt Holliday added 15 points and three assists, as all but two members of DePauw’s 13 man

DePaul remains No. 1

Even being near top is trouble

By TOM CANAVAN Associated Press Writer Don’t try to tell Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim about life in the Top 10. He knows. It’s tough enough just being there. Boeheim, who has compiled a 91-15 record in just over three years as head coach, saw his Orangemen climb two notches to the N 0.4 position in The Associated Press college basketball poll Monday behind unbeaten DePaul, Oregon State and Kentucky, respectively. “Being in the Top 10 is really a double-edged sword whether you’re No.l or No. 10,” Boeheim said. “Since we’ve got there, everybody we play has been shooting for us. But being in a top position also has a way of giving our players confidence. ” Confidence is something Boe-

Kokomo makes jump in New Albany chase

.. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A year ago, Muncie Central beat Anderson for the state championship. This year, Marion and Kokomo must also be considered serious contenders from the tough North Central Conference. Kokomo’s Wildcats, who beat Anderson last weekend, jumped to the N 0.14 ranking this week as one of three new teams among the Associated Press Top 20. The North Central Conference has produced the boys’ high school champion four of the past five years. The league has also sent at least one team to the Final Four 11 of the past 13 years. Kokomo, 13-2 for the season, is in a first-place tie with Marion in the conference standings. Anderson is a half-game behind. Kokomo could strengthen its credentials this week against Muncie Central’s Bearcats. Besides Kokomo the other newcomers to the AP poll this week are No. 19 Ixiogootee, 14-1 after beating South \ Spencer, and N 0.20 Gary Emerson, 10-3. The loss dropped South Spencer from 19th out of the poll.

squad scored in the 10th Tiger victory of the year. Mike Aspen led Roosevelt, now 8-11, with 26 points and 11 rebounds. DePauw shot 51 per cent for

heim’s players have in abundance. Their 17-1 record is evidence of that. But that’s only half the struggle this season. Luck could be the deciding factor in college basketball. “I can think of 10 teams that could win the national championship,” Boeheim said, adding that Syracuse is in his list. “There’s really no dominant team.” DePaul might be the exception. The Blue Demons walked away with the top spot in this week’s poll, collecting all 61 fir-st-place votes and a perfect score of 1,220 points in the voting by a nationwide panel of sport writers and broadcasters in easily outdistancing runnerup Oregon State.

Also out of the Top 20 were Mount Vernon of Posey County, which was 17th, despite a victory last week, and Terre Haute North, which was 20th before losing twice. In contrast with last week, when 11 of the top 13 teams were unchanged from the week before, top-ranked New Albany was the only team among the Top 20 to keep its same ranking this time. New Albany notched two more victories over the weekend and ran its season record to 12-0. The Bulldogs received 10 of 17 first-place votes and 320 of a possible 340 rating points from AP’s statewide board of sports writers and broadcasters. Unbeaten Anderson Highland, 13-0, moved up one spot to second place after Indianapolis Broad Ripple lost to unrated Indianapolis Washington by one point. Highland picked up four firstplace votes and 297 points. Argos, winner of 42 consecutive regular-season games and 15-0 this year, leaped three spots to third, with two firstplace votes and 226 points. Broad Ripple, now 14-1, drop-

the game behind what coach Cotton called confidence. “Like Indiana Central came in here believing they were going to shoot well, we went out confident we could shoot well,”

But DePaul also had its problems last week. The Blue Demons struggled to a 57-54 victory over Alabama-Birmingham and prevailed in a high-scoring 105-94 triumph over Evansville. Oregon State, second on almost every ballot, piled up 1,144 points maintaining the N 0.2 spot while Kentucky, ranked fifth a week ago, replaced Duke in the N 0.3 spot this week with 988 points. Syracuse was next with 911 points seven more than N 0.5 Duke and 11 more than N 0.6 Ohio State. Louisville,, Notre Dame and St. John’s, N.Y., maintained the Nos. 7, 8 and 9 positions. The Cardinals picked up 887 points, the Irish got 855 and the Redmen 805 in this week’s voting. Louisiana State rounded out

ped to fourth with 190 points, just three points ahead of Valparaiso, 13-1, which climbed three spots to fifth. Marion and Anderson, losers to Madison Heights and Kokomo, respectively, dropped two spots each to sixth and seventh. Rounding out the top 10 teams this week are Andrean, up three spots to eighth; South Bend LaSalle, up five places to ninth after beating South Bend Clay, and Madison Heights, up six spots to 10th after the victory over Marion. Clay heads the second 10. down four spots to 11th this week. Fort Wayne Northrop, which still got one first-place vote, fell two spots to 12th after losing by three points to Marion, and Elkhart Memorial dropped one place to 13th despite a pair of victories. Elsewhere, unbeaten Kankakee Valley fell two places to 15th; Fort Wayne South plunged seven rankings to 16th after losing to unrated Concordia: Undefeated Whitko rose one spot to 17th, and Indianapolis Manual fell three places to 18th.

the Top 10 with 543 points. North Carolina, which posted victories over Atlantic Coast Conference rivals Wake Forest and Clemson last week, headed the Second 10. Maryland, which jumped three spots despite a one-point loss to Notre Dame on national television, was N 0.12 followed by Virginia, Missouri, Weber State, Clemson, Purdue, Indiana, Brigham Young and Kansas State, the only newcomer to this week’s poll. Last week, the Second Ten was Louisiana State, Clemson, North Carolina, Purdue, Maryland, Indiana, Virginia, Weber State, Tennessee and Brigham Young.
