Divers search for crew of cutter
, ST PETERSBURG, Fla (AP) —Divers entered ihe shattered hull of a sunken Coast Guard cutter at kiawn today, looking for any of the 25 crewmen who inav have been trapped inside after a collision with a tanker just outside Tampa Bay. • The 180-foot cutter Blackthorn sank Monday night minutes after the 605-foot oil tanker S.S. Capricorn ripped into the cutter’s port side and sent the cutter into 50-foot-deep water. Coast Guard spokesmen said. "The divers have entered through hatchways, but so far they have not found anything,” said Lt. David Baird, a spokeman at the St. Petersburg Coast Guard station. Baird said the search was hampered by murky water that limited visibility to 3 to 4 feet. Divers received no response earlier when they tapped the cutter’s hull from the outside. “They're gone." said one shivering survivor at a

makeshift medical center on shore. “The guys that are down there are gone.” The cause of the collision, in calm seas under clear skies, was not known. None of the tanker’s cargo spilled, but fuel oil leaked from the cutter. Duty officer Scott Hutchins said today that 28 of the 53 crewmen aboard the Blackthorn were accounted for, including one confirmed dead who was not identified. Authorities were unsure how many men were aboard the Blackthorn One Coast Guard spokesman, James Davis, said the crew may have numbered only 52. Authorities also offered varying opinions about the prospects for anyone trapped inside the cutter. “All these people are under shock, and it would be hard for them to last very long,” said Coast Guard spokesman Lance Jones. “From what we understand, it went down real

fast,” Hutchins said of the Blackthorn, which was steaming for its homeport in Galveston, Texas, when it sank. “It could leave a good air pocket in there, so the chances could be good.” Nearly two dozen scuba divers, working under the floodlights of helicopters hovering overhead, attempted early today to check for survivors in the sunken ship, but were forced to turn back. “The original divers were called back because the currents were too strong down there,” Hutchins said. “They never got to take a good look inside the ship. As a matter of fact, they never got inside the ship.” No injuries were reported to the 30 crewmen aboard the Capricorn, owned by Apex Marine of New York. Officials also said that none of the tanker’s more than 150,000 barrels of fuel oil spilled after the collision which occurred at 8:20 p.m EST.
Games in a neutral country. Unlike a version adopted by the House last week, the Senate resolution does not specifically tie action on the Games to an arbitrary Feb. 20th deadline set by President Carter for Soviet withdrawal. Sen Frank Church, D-ldaho, the committee chairman, said this was done because “no one could reasonably believe the
Russians would withdraw their forces by the dea dI i ne. .. ” Nonetheless, he said their is wide agreement that Soviet actions in Afghanistan and the intensified repression of internal dissent represented by the internal exile given Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov “cannot go unremarked and unpunished.”
Moslems demand withdrawal. ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) Thirty-four of the world’s 41 Islamic nations today demanded the immediate withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan and urged the United States and Iran to settle their differences peacefully. They also suspended Afghanistan’s membership in their organization and declared their opposition to the use of threats, force or sanctions against Iran or “any other Islamic nation.” Foreign ministers of the 34 nations plus the Palestine Liberation Organization also urged boycotting the Moscow Olympics, breaking relations with Afghanistan, solidarity with the Afghan Moslem rebels, aid to Afghan refugees and helping Afghanistan’s Moslem neighbors withstand any threat to their security. Seven members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference boycotted the meeting in Islamabad.
4 Jogging bandit' returns loot
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A repentant robber who admires reporters, hates violence and is convinced crime doesn’t pay took the routine out of Jim Standard’s day. The managing editor of The Daily Oklahoman and Times found a box containing “more than $10,000,” a toy pistol and a neatly typed note addressed to him on the floor near his desk when he came to work Monday. “It was the darnest thing you’ve ever seen,” he said. “I thought it was some entries to a journalism contest or something. I set it up on my desk, opened it up and I just couldn’t believe it. I don’t know why the heck he picked me.” Bank officials believe the redtinted money was taken from the Quail Creek Bank on Jan. 12 when a man wearing a jogging suit entered and pulled a gun on bank tellers. Authorities said they believe the loot was stained when a tear gas grenade with pink dye, put into a pack the robber was carrying by a teller, went off as he was leaving the bank. Standard said the box was left with security officers on Saturday and was put in his office by an inter office mail worker. Police are questioning the guards to see if they remember who left the package. “There is no such thing as a perfect crime,” the note insisted. “.. from experience I know what is meant by this.” The robber, who said he was one of Standard’s readers, apparently wanted to convince the editor he is an amateur among criminals.

Bani Sadr rejects offer of aid after hostages' release
By The Associated Press President-elect Abolhassan Bani Sadr of Iran rejected the U S. offer of military and eco nomic aid if the American hostages in Tehran are freed, but Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance offered to work with him to secure the release of the captives. Bani Sadr told the French newspaper Le Monde in an interview that Washington’s offer of aid once the hostages are freed was “unacceptable.” “A dependent country is particularly vulnerable to the
Chicago schools remain open:
c. 1980 N.Y. Times ‘ CHICAGO The nation’s third largest school system was virtually shut down Monday when most of its 25,000 teachers stayed away from classes to protest not being paid for almost two weeks. The schools technically remained open, operating with personnel from the school board’s central office and a handful of parent volunteers, but the small number of students who showed up did little more than listen to stories, talk among themselves or watch movies. Thousands of teachers gathered at the Daley Center downtown in 12 degree weather

“An FBI spokesman was reported in the Jan. 13 Sunday Oklahoman as saying that my crime was no more professional than most,” said the note. “That is true. I’m not a professional criminal, and I damn sure don’t aspire to be one. ” And if there were any doubts, he said, he didn’t even count the money but thought there was “something more than $10,000” in the box. Later, he confessed to spending about SSOO, which was“all I really needed.” He said he resorted to bank robbery only because “financially I was being sucked under ” Now. however, he’s ashamed of what he did. “It is important to me that you understand that even though g . bank robber is at large, society needs to have no fear of me,” he said. The board had promised to pay school employees one of the two weeks’ salary owed them Monday, but the teachers rejected the offer. Robert Healey, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, vowed that teachers would remain off the job until they were paid in full for all wages and retroactive pay increases due them, guaranteed a full 39week school year and given assurances that no more teachers would be laid off
