Worry Clinic By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D.
Mark is like millions of children who may grow up, starved for heart calories though their undemonstrative parents may feed them liberally in the dining room. Scrapbook this case! CASE T-689: Mark T.. aged 25, is a college graduate and a junior executive in a business firm. “Dr. Crane,” one of the secretaries of that company began, “I have dated Mark for 3 months. “He is very nice and I think he is really very fond of me. “But he has never even tried to kiss me! “That bothers me, for I wonder if I am guilty of any social offense, such as ‘8.0.\ halitosis or the rest. “So I have checked and rechecked my grooming but I seem to be Okay. “Besides, other boys usually tried to make love to me on a first date. “Yet Mark has taken me to dinner and to movies, as well as concerts and other social affairs but never even holds my hand romantically as we walk through a deserted park! “Dr. Crane, is something wrong with Mark or am I at fault?” EROTIC ANACHRONISM Mark’s romantic behavior is a throwback to the past century. For in the 1890 s, we had no lewd TV programs and vulgar sex rated movies which have prodded modern youth into mistaking crude sex with true love. Besides, Mark’s mother was an attractive German exchange student at Northwestern University. She married an American but reared her children with the more constrained European attitude regarding affection. So she was not very demonstrative of her love, either for her husband or the children.

Many “cold” husbands and “frigid” wives became emotionally “conditioned” in early childhood to lack of kisses from their parents and not even a bedtime hug or a gentle love pat on the head. Their parents may have bluntly ordered them to bed at 8 o’clock without even coming to tuck them in or give them an affectionate pat. It usually isn’t intentional cruelty when such parents fail to feed their children these vital evidences of love. For they were unintentionally trained to an undemonstrative husband & wife or parent & child relationship. Sometimes, too, a very romantic boy will idolize and idealize his sweetheart till he regards her as nearly angelic, so he hesitates to mar his imagery of her with physical caresses. This type of man is difficult for many modem girls to imagine, since most of their boy friends want to prove their manhood by immediate heavy petting and demands for illicit affairs. Alas, many kiddies seldom if ever see Daddy kiss their Mamma, and many other wise devoted husbands rarely phrase their love in words or compliment their wives in front of the children, yet women want words! Especially saccharine, affectionate terms, occasionally offered in front of their youngsters, for such endearments free kiddies from a haunting fear that Daddy and Mamma may get a divorce! So join my “Compliment Club”, enclosing a long stamped, return envelope, plus 25 C, and don’t starve your family for affection! (Always write to Or. Crane, Hopkins Bldg . Mellon, Indiana 47*51, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 25 < to cover typing and printing costs when you send tor one of his booklets.)
