AND IT CAME TO PASS in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that aii the world should be taxed. And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto die city of David, which is called Bethlehem; because he was of the house and lineage of David. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped hiAi in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the itm. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, 10, the angel of die Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is bom this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to Gocl in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Ami it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, Hie shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. Ami when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of § the child, his name was called Jesus, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. Luke 2:1-21

Pilgrims jam Bethlehem Holy Land celebration begins
BETHLEHEM, Occupied West Bank (AP) Christmas celebrations in the Holy Land opened today with a colorful procession from Jerusalem to the traditional site of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. Monsignor Giacomo Giuseppe Beltritti, the top Roman Catholic clergyman here, led a motorcade of church officials and pilgrims from the walled city of old Jerusalem to Manger Square, outside the Church of the Nativity. The motorcade route was heavily guarded by Israeli troops on the alert against possible Arab terror attacks. The procession was greeted by drum rolls and a tremendous din of trumpets and bagpipes from a dozen scout bands assembled in the square, which was decorated in pine boughs, pennants and colored lights.

Few Scenes Reflect the true meaning of Christmas like the face of a sleeping child. Perhaps it was thoughts of a first Christmas in America that danced through the head of little Thein Huynh as she napped in her mother's arms Friday enroute to a new home in Greencastle. Thein, her
Ski slope needs only colder temperatures
By LARRY GIBBS Banner-Graphic Publisher It isn’t nice to fool Mother Nature, but there already has been artificial snow on Greencastle’s northern slopes this season. And there will be a lot more of it just as soon as the temperature decides to stay where it should this time of year. “We’re ready to go, but the weather hasn’t been cooperating,” explained Thomas Black, M.D., who, with Jack Stamper, D.D.S., is co-developer of the Pleasant Run ski center on the eastern slope of Waterworks Hill. “WE COULD HAVE BEEN open a couple of weeks ago if it had been cold enough,” Dr. Black said, “but we need a few consecutive days of colder weather. The ground has to be frozen to a depth of about a half-inch in order to retain the artificial snow we manufacture. Our pro shop has been open the last three weekends and a lot of people have been out. We anticipate a lot more people just as soon as the weather stays colder and we’re about

About 5,000 spectators lined up behind police barriers to witness the arrival of the procession. The patriarch, wearing white and scarlet vestments, was greeted by Bethlehem Mayor Elias Freij and Israel’s military governor of the West Bank, Brig. Gen. Binyamin Ben-Eliezer. The three men marched between two rows of priests and monks who wore white, gold and crimson capes, and entered the basilica, where the patriarch will lead the pontifical high Mass at midnight. Green-bereted Israeli border police linked hands and formed a protective cordon as the three men entered the church, while troops watched over the proceedings from rooftop positions. Israeli army helicopters hovered above the town, and two Phantom jet fighters made slow turns

to begin skiing.” The machine which produces artificial snow at Pleasant run is capable of blanketing an entire acre with a one-inch cover in only an hour’s time under the right conditions. Utilizing a water line along one side of the slope, the snow machine is pulled to various points on the hillside to achieve desired depths of the powdery white stuff. “The problem isn’t that we need it to snow because we can make our own,” Dr. Black emphasized. “The problem is that
Professor's interest saved his voice
Scott Henderson, an active 20-year-old DePauw University junior, is giving thanks this Christmas for small classes and sensitive teachers. He has his voice back now after a chilling experience with a form of pre-cancer called displasia. He credits a voice-sensitive DePauw English teacher, Prof. Fred Nelson, with spotting his raspy voice and urging him to see a throat specialist. Immediately. “DURING THE SEMESTER, both in and out of the classroom, Prof. Nelson noticed an increased raspiness in my voice," the combined English compositioneconomics major said. “He suggested I get it checked out by a throat specialist because often this hoarseness is caused by a nodule on the vocal cords.” The prospect of regaining his failing voice “stirred" his interest. “I had been gradually losing it during the past year but attributed it to colds. 1 never really paid much attention to it .”
just below the cloud cover in what appeared to be a salute as the motorcade entered Bethlehem. In his Christmas greeting, Prime Minister Menachem Begin said: “May the coming year be one of peace and understanding in our region and throughout the world.” Freij, watching from his office balcony as bustling workers added the final holiday touches to Manger Square, offered a Christmas message of hope for the 50 Americans held hostage by Iranian militants inTehren. Condemning the Nov. 4 hostage taking “in the strongest terms,” Freij said the Iranians “have no right to hold them. It is against Christianity and against Islam.” Freij has been the only Palestinian leader to take a public stand against the
we have to have colder temperatures.” MAN-MADE SNOW already has covered the hill partially during testing and Dr. Black said it lasted a remarkably long time, despite unreasonably warm temperatures this month. Development of Pleasant Run has proceeded rapidly since announcement of the project last June. The site is situated on 30 acres adjacent to the Stamper residence and is reached via a main entrance along U S 231 at the top of Waterworks Hill.
Nelson, who directs a campus repertory group in addition to his teaching of English composition and dramatic literature, did, however. His sensitivity was no doubt sharpened by his training in Yale’s Drama School. HENDERSON consulted an Indianapolis ortholaryngologist. He confirmed Henderson’s fears. There was a growth on one vocal cord, plus a severely deviated septum that compounded Henderson’s breathing and cause severe infections. A second opinion in his hometown of St. Joseph, Mich., confirmed the earlier finding. Henderson went to surgery. “Five days after surgery I returned to have the splints removed from my nose. At this point the doctor asked if I smoked. I said ‘no,’ ” Henderson explained. THE PATHOLOGY department, it seems, had examined the nodule that had been removed. It was unable to explain its nature. The tissue was representative of a 50-60 year-old who had smoked heavily all his life. The tissue was sent to the
Iranian action, which is supported hy Yasser Arafat’s Palestine Liberation Organization and by other West Bank leaders. Israeli tourism officials expected over 35,000 holiday makers in Bethlehem. Jerusalem and Nazareth, where special services were planned for the United Nations peacekeeping forces Freij estimated 1 million visitors, many Arabs from neighboring countries, visited Bethlehem this year, up about 15 percent. But he claimed Christmas shopping in a town that lives off the tourist trade was suffering because of Israel’s “devastating inflation rate” of over 100 percent. “The price of toys is beyond the reach of my own people. Inflation is eating up their income in an unprecedented way,” he said. DPU employees get advance on pay raises DePauw University employees got an unexpected, unprecedented Christmas present today--an unscheduled three per cent advance on pay raises for the 1980-81 school year. The increase, effective in January, will cover all people working for the university, including part-time faculty and staff. It comes in addition to pay raises scheduled in January for secretaries, food service and residence hall staff and July raises scheduled for other university personnel. DePAUW PRESIDENT Richard F Fosser said the action was approved by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. He emphasized that it should not however, be considered a precedent. He said that despite inflationary pressures on the university’s budget the first six months of fiscal 1979-80, it appears the private university may be headed for a significant surplus this year-the first surplus of this size for many years. Three factors he said, in a letter to employees, make the fiscal mid-year raises possible. “First, our enrollment is higher than predicted. Second, participation by alumni and friends in our Annual Fund campaign has increased. And, third, our short term investments have yielded more income than expected. The Executive Committee voted on Monday night to share this success with all of you.”
Approved June 14 by the Greencastle Zoning Board, which has jurisdiction within a two-mile range of the actual city limits. Pleasant Run features a ski run of about 900 feet with a vertical drop of approximately 110 feet over the length of the course. Rental equipment and parking facilities are ready. Dr. Black said. Formal announcement of the opening of the course for skiing will be made just as soon as colder temperatures permit production of snow on the entire slope.
University of Michigan for further study. “A week later the doctor called my parents and me into his office," Henderson now vividly recalls. “The tissue did not represent cancer--as we had feared, but a form of precancer’ called displasia. a type of cell disorganization.” It was back to surgery. The remaining disorganized cells were scraped off the vocal cord. Now, he continues to have regular checks on his vocal cords, but he says “all is well. My voice is much better." “It is clear that without Prof. Nelson’s acute ear for voice and his consequential prompting to get my throat check, I could possibly have encountered a very serious problem," Henderson said. “I AM GRATEFUL for his in terest in me as a person, not just as a student; and I am certainly not a unique case either for Prof. Nelson or other DePauw professors " When he graduates from DePauw in 1981 Henderson plans to use his new-found volume in either law or business.
