'Star of Bethlehem' traces scientific and historical data
By VICTOR WILSON Newhouse News Service NEW YORK—The main account of the Star of Bethlehem is found in the Gospel of St. Matthew. and it begins (Matthew 2; 1-2 U "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying. ‘Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him’-.” The star is a mystery, according to the eminent English astronomer. Dr. David Hughes, though certainly a popular one appearing every Christmas on millions of cards, illuminating shepherds, and guiding wise men (the Magi) across the desert. Undertaking an investigation in "The Star of Bethlehem” (Walker, $14,95), Hughes delves into Biblical texts, oral traditions, astronomy, astrology and historical data and writings and comes to satisfactory scientific and historical conclusion. Hughes is a lecturer in astronomy and physics at England’s University of Sheffield. He is an international authority on the solar system, with special interest in meteors, comets and cosmic dust. He is a regular contributor to the scientific journal Nature, and an article in it two years ago on the Star of Bethlehem attracted worldwide attention. The introduction to his book that theories about the star have ranged from a nova, super-nova or comet to a fireball, zodical light, ball lighting or the variable star Mira. “Even the possibility that the star was simply a legend had to be taken seriously,” he writes. And at the other extreme: “An explanation in terms of a miracle beyond the scope of science also has its advocates.” Hughes lists the evidence that emerged as his probe proceeded: 1. The star was first seen by the wise men when they were in the east. 2. It was observed at its acronychal phase(sunset). 3. At that time it had a distinct astrological meaning. 4. It disappeared as the wise

men journeyed to Jerusalem. 5. It was so insignificant that herod and all Jerusalem had overlooked it. 6. The same star appeared when the wise men were in Jerusalem, and then went before them and “stood over” Bethlehem. Hughes offers rival explanations of the star: 1. "It was an actual physical object, explicable by scientific law. 2. “It was a miracle, an invention of God for his own specific purpose. 3. “It was a literary invention, a mid-rash (interpretation of scripture) the author of Matthew making up the appearance of the star to convince his Jewish-Christian audience that Jesus was the true Messiah.” “I am convinced,” Hughes writes, “that the first of these three explanations is the correct one.” Hughes calls the second
Many view nativity scene in his basement STURBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) George Duquette always wondered what the first Christmas was really like. So over the past 20 years he’s recreated that nativity scene in his basement. Now it fills the cellar, and hundreds of people make a Christmas pilgrimmage to his basement Bethlehem. “Bethlehem at Sturbridge” is peopled by nearly 1,000 miniature figures, animals, buildings, trees, mountains, and even a desert. It sits on a 50-foot-by-5-foot platform in front of a 90-seat theater the 53-year-old retired printer built in the basement of his split-level home. Outside, the huge letters “BETHLEHEM” on the side of his house welcome visitors as they enter a 30-space parking lot. At least once a day, Duquette gives an hour-long soundandlight show aimed at recreating the feeling of the first Christmas, and the life and death of Jesus.

possibility “theologically weak”; the third, “unacceptable” because “Matthew’s nativity reads like a simple tale well told.” The explanation of the Star of Bethlehem “lies in a tangible physical happening,” though a rare one, Hughes concludes. The happening in the sky “was a series of conjunctions and accompanying rising and settings of the major planets Jupiter and Saturn,” he writes. This is not a new conclusion. It dates back several hundred years, the author says. But the movements of Jupiter and Saturn, in Pisces, fit the large majority of facts, he asserts. “Even though it was an extremely significant event to a trained astronomer,” Hughes concludes, "in reality it consisted of two perfectly normal planets, moving as usual along their ordained celestial paths. “This is why herod and the people of Jerusalem could easily miss its significance.”

Rich legends surround Christmas tree
By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Those shimmering evergreens inside many homes these days have storied origins that are about as colorful as the brightly lighted trees themselves. Like much else about Christmas, the tree is part of accumulated traditions, both seasonal and otherwise the shopping, lights, Santa Claus, parties gradually woven into celebration of Christ’s birth. Some of the customs have pagan roots, so much so that Christmas festivities were banned in 17th century England and in early America, but the mingled celebration of wassails and adoration became

general by the mid-l9th century. Some of the richest legends and lore surround those sparkling trees. Since earliest times, trees have been associated with the sacred, particularly the everygreen, symbol of survival. Decorating homes with greenery and lights goes back to ancient pagan Roman observance of calends, the new moon of a new year, marked with gift-giving. But use of the Christmas tree in connection with the Christ child is said to have been started in Bth century Germany by the missionary St. Boniface who spread Christianity to that country. Legend says that on a Christmas eve, while he was furiously

tree. It is the wood of peace, for your homes are built of it. It is the sign of an endless life, for its leaves are always green “Let this be the tree of the Christ Child Gather about it, not in the wild woods, but in your own homes. There it will shelter no deed of blood, but loving gifts and acts of kindness.” The Christmas tree was not the pagan Yule tree, researchers say, but was distinguished from it and was used in medieval German “paradise plays” held outdoors and portraying the creation of humanity In those days, the tree was hung with apples, which later became ornaments.
