Hal should realize that ‘‘Camaraderie” beats “Cash” when dealing with your kiddies! Alas, many parents think sss will buy the allegiance of their children. Note John’s blue bicvcle! CASE T-655: Hal B„ aged 34, has 3 children in grammar school. “Dr. Crane,” he began, “I am always puzzled as to what toys to buy for my youngsters. “As a very successful insurance salesman, I have a reasonable amount of money to spend. “But I have read your ‘Worry Clinic’ ever since I was a high school sophomore, so I know you don’t advise spoiling children with too many toys or lavish gifts. “So how should a father handle this problem in the best psychological manner?” CASH VS. CAMARADERIE Children would much rather work together with their Daddy to make gifts for Mamma and their siblings. For whenever we invest time and our own money in a project, it usually pleases us more than Daddy’s cash handouts. Besides, the cooperation with Daddy has far more lasting value! For example, a medical colleague of mine here in Chicago, named John 1,., came from a broken home where money was scarce. His parents were divorced and money was scarce, so John did errands in the neighborhood and also carried a small newspaper route. When he had saved SB, he bought an old bicycle that needed a new tire and a coat of paint. John fixed up the bike and gave it a dandy blue enamel color. sent him a SSO brand new bicycle. John admired it and thanked his Daddy. But he stuck to the $8 bike that he had rebuilt, for he prized it more than the SSO gift. Why? Because he had matte the $8 bike into the envy of his pals, some of whom had asked him for advice in fixing up broken down bicycles of their own. John’s ego was thus inflated by the many hours of work and the skimped money he had saved to put into his rebuilt bike. And so it is with the usual kiddies, for when Mamma and Daddy join them in making rag dolls or scooters or other homemade toys, those creations represent not only ego inflation of the child but also a happy linkage of themselves with the parents who were partners in such endeavors! Alas, some busy fathers think they can offset their absence from their kiddies and the lack of creative camaraderie by expensive gifts, yet such kiddies often become juvenile delinquents and even hostile to their parents. For cooperative work and play between parents and children cement their interests and loyalty far more than expensive sports cars for college kids or lavish gifts to high schoolers! So give your kiddies at least one afternoon per week of your time, to do with as they suggest, for this is an ideal antidote for drug addiction and juvenile delinquency, as seen in tomorrow’s case.
