Freshman's dream is UCLA nightmare

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Never, in his wildest dreams, did Notre Dame’s John Paxson imagine he would hit the winning free throws against UCLA as a freshman. “I never thought I’d even be in there at the end of a close game,” the jubilent Paxson admitted after Tuesday night’s 7774 come-from-behind victory over the 7th-ranked Bruins. “But it didn’t bother me. This is just unbelievable.” Paxson hit two free throws that gave fourth-ranked Notre

Dame a one-point lead with five seconds remaining. He then stole a UCLA pass, was fouled intentionally and hit two more free throws with two seconds to go as the Irish nailed down their sixth victory in the last eight games against the Bruins. “I don’t even remember what was going through my mind,” said the 6-foot-2 freshman from Kettering, Ohio, an 80 percent foul shooter in high school. “I didn feel any pressure. I just went up to the line and blocked everything out of my mind. It was a matter of shooting like I do in practice. When I released them, they felt good.”

63 percent shooting not enough to beat Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) Coach Bobby Knight isn’t used to winning when the opposition shoots nearly 63 percent from the field, but his top-rank-ed Hoosiers are still unbeaten despite a hot-shooting performance by 16th-rated Georgetown. “I don’t think we’ve ever had anyone shoot like that against us,” said Knight after Indiana climbed to 4-0 by defeating Georgetown 76-69 here Tuesday. “I think they played better and more consistently over the 40 minutes,” added Knight. Co-captain Mike Woodson scored 23 points and freshman Isiah Thomas sparked Indiana with a season-high 19 to spoil Georgetown’s upset dreams. Craig Shelton was perfect on 10 shots from the field in leading the Hoyas with 23, while Eric Floyd chipped in with 21 and John Duren added 14. The trio

Edmonson takes pressure off Carroll as Boilermakers win

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Purdue basketball coach Lee Rose’s search for a running mate for play-making guard Brian Walker may be over. Sophomore Keith Edmonson took up the slack Tuesday night when Nebraska’s defense sagged on Joe Barry Carroll and led the ninth-ranked Boilermakers to a 78-56 victory, their fifth without a loss this season. “Edmonson’s job was to get near the basket with a small guard, and the other guys were supposed to look for him,” Rose said. “We emphasized that at

assists with five against the Bruins, led the comeback with six of his 10 second-half points coming on free throws. For the game, Notre Dame outscored UCLA 23-8 from the foul line. UCLA shut off one rally that closed the gap to two, but a basket by Rod Foster and a free throw by Tyren Naulls with just over two minutes remaining were the Bruins’ final points. A bucket by Orlando Woolridge, a pair of free throws by Kelly Tripucka and another free throw by Tracy Jackson cut the lead to 74-73 with 35 seconds to go. After Naulls missed a free throw, the Irish rebounded and worked the ball to Paxson, who was fouled as he went up for a shot. “We were down one with five seconds to go,” Paxson said. “Somebody had to shoot it. I thought if I missed we could get the rebound. I was fortunate to get fouled.” Paxson’s four free throws were his only points of the game. Notre Dame Coach Digger Phelps said he did not think the Irish played well, and he crdited that to UCLA’s defensive pressure. “I said before the game that this one would go to the last

layup put Indiana ahead for good 50-49 with 12:20 remaining. And with 2:10 remaining, a slam dunk by Shelton pulled Georgetown to 65-63. But, Shelton was called for a technical foul on the basket after he hung on the rim. Woodson made the free throw following the technical and the Hoyas never drew closer than three points after that. Thomas, a 6-foot-3 guard recruited from Chicago by Knight, made 10 of his points in the final five minutes. Included were six free throws in the last three minutes when the Hoyas were forced to foul in an attempt to gain possession as Indiana went into a delay game. “The player who played the best over the course of 40 minutes was Isiah Thomas,” Knight said. “Especially in the last 10-minute stretch.” The game was a reunion for Thomas and Duren, who were

ond half and finish the game with a ca reer-high 27 points. Carroll, 7-1 center who entered the game with a 32-point scoring average, was held to 16 points and seven rebounds, but Rose wasn’t really unhappy about that, either. “It’s nice that we are able to get other people in the offense,” Rose said. “We’re going to need that.” Besides Edmonson, 6-6 forward Drake Morris took over the rebounding load with a game-high 11 and passed out six of Purdue’s 22 assists. It was Edmonson and Carroll who got the Boilermakers going

minute,” Phelps said. “I think we played good defensively, but there were a few lapses under the boards which gave (Kiki) Vandeweghe and (Gig) Sims easy buckets.” Phelps said Paxson “is just that type of player to go up and not think of. anything else but making his free throws. He showed excellent poise and confidence.” Larry Brown, losing for the firs' time in four games as the new UCLA coach, said the momentum changed when the Bruins “got careless, made some silly fouls and took some bad shots.” “What can you cay. They go 19 for 22 from the free throw line in the second half; we go 2 for 10. We did a lot of good things, but we let them off the hook on the foul line.” Branning led the 4-0 Irish with 16 points, while Tripucka, accidentally injured when he caught a referee’s elbow in his mouth as he ran downcourt in the final seconds, finished with 3 and was game-high rebounder with 10. Vandeweghe topped the Bruins with 17 points, while Foster, a lightening quick freshman guard, hit all seven of his field goal attempts and wound

teammates on the U.S. gold medal team Knight coached last summer. “I think defensively, he’s played better each time he’s played except for tonight,” Knight said about Thomas. “He was a half step slower tonight. I think maybe it was because he had played against Duren all summer and respects him as a tremendous player. “But, this was his best game offensively.” Georgetown Coach John Thompson, who defeated Knight in the only previous meeting between the two teams last season, also was impressed with Thomas, who had 4 assists and a pair of steals. “Thomas adds a new dimension with a quick guard,” said Thompson about Indiana, adding, “The biggest thing they do is keep their concentration and they don’t do a lot to hurt themselves.”

in the second half after Nebraska had cut a seven-point deficit to 33-31 at halftime. Purdue went on a 14-2 tear eight by Edmonson and four by Carroll to start the second half and put the Cornhuskers away with 72 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes. For the game, Purdue hit 33V 53 from the field for 62 percent, while Nebraska hit just 20 of 58 for 35 percent. Nebraska's interim coach, Moe Iba, called the 5-0 Boilermakers a “great team” and said they are “15 points better than they were a year ago.”

up with 15 points. “I want the freshmen to play in situations like tonight,” said Phelps. “It will do them little good if we put them in when we are 20 points up. I think if the freshmen continue to play in pressure situations, they’ll be ready when the (NCAA) tournament comes.” Legal Notices STATE OF INDIANA COUNTY OF PUTNAM at: IN THE PUTNAM CIRCUIT COURT TERM, 1979 IN THE MATTER OF ESTATE OF ALBERT LUETEKE, DECEASED Eatate No. 74-83 NOTICE TO ALL PERSONS INTERESTED IN THE ESTATE OF ALBERT LUETEKE, DECEASED In tho manor ol tha Eatata of Alban Luofaka, dacaaaad.
