its newly issued 1978-1979 yearbook. Football had more participants, some 26,000, but only 398 IHSAA-member schools competed in that sport. For girls, the sport played at the greatest number of schools was volleyball, which drew 11,-
600 participants at 476 schools. Girls’ basketball was played by 11,100 at 475 schools. Following boys’ basketball were track and field, 16,300 at 460 schools; cross country, 7,000 at 444 schools; baseball, 13,300 at 443 schools; football; wrestling, 12,000 at 384 schools; golf, 4.700 at 371 schools; tennis, 5,200 at 308 schools; and swimming, 4,400 at 177 schools. The least-played boys’ sport was gymnastics, with only 700 participants from 37 schools. After girls volleyball and basketball were track and field, 13,500 at 460 schools; tennis, 4,500 at 275 schools; gymnastics, 3,600 at 128 schools; swimming, 3.700 at 160 schools; and golf, 1,300 at 128 schools. Last year’s paid attendance
at all state IHSAA tournaments totaled 1,607,538, up from 1.54 million the year before but still down slightly from the 1.63 million in 1976-77. Last year’s total included 1.08 million for the month-long boys’ basketball tournament and 144,628 for the girls’ basketball tourney. Here’s a rundown of the IHSAA champions for the 1978-79 school year: Girls golf-LaPorte team champion; Cathy Crum, Richmond, low medalist; Janis Kleiman, IHSAA mental attitude award winner. Tiger Cubs stand 1-1 Greencastle lost at South Vermillion in boys freshman basketball Monday night 53-49. Together with the 37-24 victory over North Montgomery the Cubs are now 1-1. Scoring at South Vermillion were: Bill Shuee 12, Mike Lee two, Tracy Pursell four, Brad Rushing three, Brian Richard two, Todd Inman eight, Tony Judy nine, Scott Hess nine and John Duncan and Mark Marley played but did not score Eagles top Clovers The South Putnam freshmen defeated Cloverdale Monday night 48-42 at South Putnam. Scoring for South Putnam were Meek 18, Schroer 10, Anderson six, Hendricks and Thompson five each. Minor two and Van Horn and Allen one each. Scoring for Cloverdale were Tucker 15, Neese 14, Craig eight, Burdette four and Need one. South Putnam is now 1-0. N.P. freshmen win The North Putnam freshman basketball team defeated Monrovia 48-20 Monday night. Scoring for North Putnam were: Nelson 11. Goff five. Cop ner four, Heacock four, Bullerdick four. Kurtz three, McGaughey three, Strader three, Neumann two. Miles two. Clifford two, Cash two and Hartman one. Cougar 7th Grade 3-0 The North Putnam Seventh Grade upped its record to 3-0 with a 36-21 victory over Monrovia Monday night Previous victories were against Greencastle and Southmont The Cougar Eighth Grade lost 46-43.
Cougars beaten in wrestling meet
North Putnam won only four matches Monday night and lost its opening wrestling match of the season 46-21 to visiting Danville. JEFF SMITH was the first Cougar winner. Smith, up from the 105 pound class this year at 119 pounds, won with a second period pin over Danville’s J. Schmink. Gene Winings won the 145 pound class for North Putnam. Winings pinned J. Gregory in the third period of his match. Matt Brown also won with a third period pin. Brown, a senior in the 155 pound class, pinned B Wright. TROY BRYAN went the furthest of any of the Putnam County wrestlers last year in the state tournament and opened the season with a victory. Bryan won a 13-6 decision in the 167-pound class.
Bruins beat Clovers with third quarter
Foul trouble led to the third Cloverdale girls basketball loss in as many outings Monday night against Tri-West. The 46-39 set back was also the third West Central Conference loss for Cloverdale. CLOVERDALE LED at the first stop 9-7 and was tied with the visitors 15-15 at halftime. But in the third period starting sophomore Laura Roach picked up her third foul and to protect her from a fourth during the quarter, coach Jeannette Sharp pulled Roach from the floor.
