Houston rallies to trim Texas
HOUSTON (AP) - Secondstring quarterback Terry Elstop sprinted 72 yards for a touchdown and Terald Clark rushed for a career high 167 yafds Friday, rallying ninthranked Houston from a 10-0 third-quarter deficit to a 14-10 victory over Texas Tech. The triumph lifted the Cougars, 9-1 with one game remaining, into a share of the Southwest Conference lead with Arkansas and offset a recordsetting 199-yard rushing effort by James Hadnot, who set Texas Tech single-season and

Houston began its comeback in the third period after Tech, a 10M>-point underdog, took a 10-0 lead on Bill Adams’ 19-yard field goal in the first period and Hadnot’s 61-yard dash down the right sideline on the third play after the second-half kickoff. Anderson's Held expects to see stall tactics
By HANK LOWENKRON AP Sports Writer Norm Held’s Anderson Indians have a reputation as a running basketball team, but the veteran coach says he isn’t upset if someone holds the ball on 1979-80 basketball team. “We want everybody to run with us,” said Held who has five veterans back from last season’s state runnerup team. “We know some are not going to, of course.” Friday’s Held’s club, ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press prep poll, showed its running ability as it raced past Kokomo Haworth 102-78 for its second victory of the young season.
Cellar-dwellers battle at Cincy
CINCINNATI (AP) - Fullback Pete Johnson is having a good year for the Cincinnati Bengals. At his current pace, he should finish with more yards by a Bengal rusher than anybody in the last six years. That helps put into perspective the kind of year that rookie Otis Anderson is having with the St. Louis Cardinals. O.J. II already has 1,217 yards in 12 games nearly twice as many yards as Johnson to lead the National Football League in rushing.
Florida, Florida State at opposite ends of spectrum
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Power fullback Mark Lyles burst 20 yards for the tie-breaking touchdown early in the fourth quarter and clinched the game with a 3-yard run in the final two minutes to lead fifthranked Florida State to a 27-16 victory over Florida on Friday. The victory gave the Orange Bowl-bound Seminoles, 11-0, an unbeaten regular season. The victory was FSU’s 15th straight, while the Gators, who finish next week at the University of Miami, are 0-9-1. Lyles’ touchdown snapped a 10-10 tie with 12:31 left and capped an 80-yard drive. The Seminoles opened a 20-10 lead on Bill Capece’s 18-yard field goal after tackle Walter Carter was
line with 12:38 to play. Clark reeled off a pair of 4-yard runs before Elston faked his way around linebacker Andrew Thomas, cut left and outran safety Larry Flours to the end zone, with Robert Jones throwing a key block. The setback closed out Texas Tech’s season at 3-6-2, the Red Raiders’ first losing campaign since 1971 and the first time since 1962 they failed to win at least four games. Hadnot, however, was a bright spot. The 230-pounder, who was converted from tight

“I don’t care if people hold the ball on us,” Held said before his club opened its season with a 94-74 triumph over Indianapolis Marshall on Wednesday. “It helps us to prepare for tourney time. I’d just as soon see the delay during the season so we’ll be ready for it when the tournament rolls around.” Muncie Central, the team that defeated Anderson for the state title, opened its season with a 97-64 pounding of Jay County. The Bearcats, rated No. 4 in the pre-season poll, jumped to an early 8-2 advantage and were never in trouble as all five starters finished in double figures. Five other ranked clubs post-
Of course, Anderson has carried the ball 245 times, more than Johnson will see all season. The Bengals just don’t use Johnson that way. “We have been able to move the ball fairly well,” conceded Cardinal Coach Bud Wilkinson. “We just haven’t been able to score much.” , St. Louis, 3-9, is barely averaging 19 points a game and has lost five games by a total of 13 points. Cincinnati, 2-10, scores a little better but yields more than 26 points a game and has
credited with an interception on a controversial play deep in Florida territory. A television replay seemed to show that Larry Ochab’s pass hit the ground before Carter grabbed it. Ochab tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Juan Collins as the Gators came back with 2:21 left. But a two-point conversion pass failed, and an onside-kick try didn’t work and set up FSU’s final touchdown. The winless Gators, trying to salvage some prestige aginst their arch-rivals, stymied the vaunted FSU quarterback tandem of Jimmy Jordan and Wally Woodham with four sacks and two interceptions. But each quarterback put to-

That erased Larry Isaac’s mark of 2,633 set in four seasons. Hadnot also moved into ninth place on the all-time SWC rushing chart, passing Jim Swink of Texas Christian and Alvin Maxon of Southern Methodist. The eight players ahead of him all played running back for at least three seasons.
ed Friday victories. No. 6 Fort Wayne South edged South Bend LaSalle 79-75, while No. 7 Gary Roosevelt posted a 70-63 triumph over Gary West in the East Chicago Washington tournament. The victory sends Roosevelt against East Chicago Roosevelt, a 66-56 winner over the 18th-rated Senators in the other first round game. In other games involving ranked teams. No. 9 South Bend Clay downed Glenn 62-45, No. 12 South Bend Adams defeated Crown Point 54-44 and No. 15 Richmond topped Union County 68-62. Seven players finished in double figures for Anderson,
lost four games by three points or less. The two teams play here Sunday at 1 p.m. EST. A victory wouldn’t lift either team out of last place in its division, however. “O.J. is playing quite well,” Wilkinson said. “He always has been a great ball carrier, and he has been improving as a blocker. He’s very nearly a complete ballplayer.” Both teams have been plagued by injuries. “We haven’t started the same
gether a long scoring drive. Jordan relieved Woodham in the second quarter and hit five passes in a 71-yard march. Wide receiver Hardis Johnson grabbed a 21-yard touchdown pass 11 seconds before the first half ended, giving FSU a 10-0 lead. Woodham directed an 80-yard drive that began late in the third quarter and ended with Lyles’ score, then led the Seminoles on the clinching 40-yard drive in the last two minutes. Davy Cappelen hit a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter for FSU, but missed two other attempts. Capece, relegated to kickoff duty all season, did the second-half placekicking for FSU.

Bird stuffs Pacers with Celtic high
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Celtics dug deep, like for $3.25 million, to sign rookie Larry Bird last summer. Now it’s like money in the bank, as Bird is returning bigger dividends than the prime interest rate. Bird, the nation’s college player of the year last spring, hit a pro career high 30 points and the Celtics extended their unbeaten home record to nine games Friday night with a US--103 National Basketball Association victory over the Indiana Pacers. “The only way to play him is strong outside and front him inside,” Indiana Coach Bob Leonard said in praising Bird. “He has a great nose for the ball, and we didn’t play him strongly enough outside. Once he gets two steps with the ball, the chances are he’ll score. ” While helping the Celtics pack Boston Garden with a capacity crowd of 15,320 for the sixth time in nine games this season,
which led 22-7 after one period and 51-25 at halftime. Henry Johnson was high with 19 points and Gary McGhee had 15. The Indians led by 42 points before Held cleared his bench in the second half. Erick Grady paced Haworth with 25 points. Rick Rowray’s 21 points was high for the Bearcats, who are seeking their third consecutive state title this season. Accurate free throw shooting helped Adams hold off a late charge by Crown Point. The victorious Eagles hit 9-of-14 free throws in the final period after Crown Point had pulled to within three points early in the quarter.
offensive line in any two consecutive games this season and we aren’t going to this week, either,” Wilkinson said. “Keith Wortman is out with a knee injury, and we won’t know until game time about Bob Young.” Bengal Coach Homer Rice knows center Blair Bush is out, and offensive tackle Vern Holland is among the questionable. But the biggest blow last week was the loss of linebacker Reggie Williams, the team’s leading tackier.

Bird hit on 14 of 29 field goal attempts, and both of his two free throws. The 6-foot-9 former Indiana State star also had 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. “You can’t be a perfectionist when you thread the needle on passes or shoot from outside,” Bird said, noting his seven turnovers. “You just have to have confidence enough and most of your game will be effective.” Bird had plenty of help as the Celtics raced to their 10th victory in 12 games and improved their record to 14-4, the best in the NBA. After being kicked around for a couple of years, the Celtics are 10 games over .500 for the first time since March, 1976. M.L. Carr, a veteran signed as a free agent after playing out his option in Detroit, continued to sparkle as Boston’s “sixth man.” Playing just 22 minutes, Carr scored 19 points. Other Boston scorers in

Veteran center Dave Cowens let his mates do the scoring, finishing with just nine point, one more than his backup, Rick Robey. “I tried to rest Cowens for the game in Atlanta Saturday night, but when he was out of there in the fourth period we couldn’t get two rebounds in a row, so he had to back in,” Boston Coach Bill Fitch said. “We missed 41 shots and we’re not going to win with that kind of shooting,” said Indiana’s Mickey Johnson, who had 18 points, two fewer than teammate Mickey Davis. “Bird was outstanding, but we still could have won,” Leonard said. “We missed, by my count, 10 layups in the first half. We just couldn’t shoot the ball in the hoop.”
