Worry Clinic
By George W. Crane, Ph.D., M.D.
liriita’s pertinent question may be of double interest to you faithful readers of this practical column on Applied Psychology. It shows how I finally woke up to female psychology at age 10. CASE T-626: Lolita S., aged 19, was one of my psychology students at Northwestern University. “Dr. Crane,” she inquired, “what made you decide to specialize in psychology? “And were you more of an introvert or an extrovert in your childhood?” INTROVERT OR EXTROVERT Since I was the firstborn, with a brother a couple of years younger, I was a typical introvert. And my brother was just as typically an extrovert. We then lived in Covington, Indiana, and during one summer vacation we camped along the Wabash River, living in tents. A Chicago family visited us at the campsite for a few days. They had a snooty daughter, aged 8, which was also the same age as my brother, John, while I was 10. One morning, we kids took a hike along the river and as we started across a moss covered open tract of land, maybe half an acre in size, we began to sink in quicksand. John and this Chicago girl were farther out into the quicksand, whereas I was near enough to solid ground to grasp an overhanging shrub. John and the girl were now down almost to their waists in the quicksand, but I managed to pull myself to shore. “I’m going to die,” screamed the terrified girl, “but I don’t vant to die. Please help me, somebody!”
Help Wanted
Well, I tossed a few dead branches out to them to help slow down their descent. Meanwhile, my brother was trying to pacify the hysterical girl with encouraging talk. Seeing that we needed adult help, I started running toward camp and a few hundred yards upstream I met my Uncle Frank. As I gasped out the problem, we ran back to the pair in the quicksand. Uncle Frank cut a couple of long wild grapevines and tossed them out to the sinking pair, who were now down above their waists, after which he managed to pull them to safety. When we got back to camp, the Chicago damsel lauded John as her hero and lifesaver, though it was really my headwork that brought their rescue. And next day, she got a box of Chicago chocolates, which she shared exclusively with John, not even offering me a single one. That’s when it slowly began to dawn on me that women not only want words but glib palaver will offset strong, silent men who really deliver the groceries in real life! It took me several years, however, before the full implication sank into my thick skull, but 30 years later I thus launched my “Compliment Club” project with my psychology classes. My mother also often referred to the textbooks of William James, Harvard pioneer psychologist, so that may have helped predispose me to psychology. (Always wrltt to Or. Crant, Hopkins •Idg., Moiiott, Indiana 47»55, ancloslng a long stampad, addrassad anvalopa and lit to covar typing and printing costs whan you sand tar ona at his boaklats.)
