Yankees move on
Keystone combination begins plugging some holes
By JOSEPH DURSO c. 1979 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK The New York Yankees moved into their postBilly Martin era Thursday by unveiling their new general manager and manager, and they promptly announced two sweeping trades involving 12 players in which they lost Chris Chambliss but gained Ruppert Jones. The trades were made known by Gene Michael, the former shortstop who was formally anointed as general manager at the age of 41, and by Dick Howser, the former utility infielder who was introduced as the new manager at 42. They once formed a double-play combination as players, and Thursday they turned a kind of front-office double play, giving seven players and getting five. In the first deal, the Yankees, who traded Mickey Rivers to the Texas Rangers last summer, filled the vacancy in center field by getting Jones from the Seattle Mariners along with Jim Lewis, a right-handed pitcher who has appeared only twice in the big leagues. The key man was Jones, a 24-year-old sprinter who hit 21 home runs and stole 33 bases last season. To get him the Yankees surrendered four players: Juan Beniquez, the outfielder, who was injured much of the summer: Jim Beattie, a World Series pitching hero in 1978 who spent most of 1979 shuttling to the minor leagues: Rick Anderson, a rookie pitcher, and Jerry Narron, a catcher. Five hours later, the Yankees completed a second six-man exchange, this time with the Toronto Blue Jays. They gave up

Chambliss, their first baseman and one of their stars for the last six years; Paul Mirabella, a young left-handed pitcher, and Damaso Garcia, a shortstop. In return, they acquired Rick Cerone, a catcher; Tom Underwood, a left-handed pitcher, and Ted Wilborn, a minor league outfielder.
Healthy and excited Buckeyes meet confident lllini squad
By JOE MOOSHIL AP Sports Writer Ohio State’s undefeated and fifth-ranked Buckeyes are three victories away from a most spectacular season and with the way they’re going, Earle Bruce figures to guide them to an undefeated season in his first year as head coach. “We are healthy now, we are playing with great enthusiasm and confidence,” said Bruce be-

fore taking his Buckeyes to Illinois for a regionally televised game Saturday. “You can tell we are excited about getting out on the field and playing football. The better the opponent, the better we seem to play. I like that. Golly, I like that.” While Bruce’s exuberance certainly seems justified since the Buckeyes lead the Big Ten in most departments in offense
“Is this a shakeup?” Michael asked, echoing the question. “No, it’s not a shakeup. We’re just plugging some holes.” “Everybody calls it turmoil,” Howser said, wincing at any suggestion that the Martin years had been turbulent. “I’d like to have as little turmoil as possible, but the chief thing is to win.” As for the trades, Jones is a left-handed hitter, which left the Yankees still searching for right-handed power. They did subtract one left-hander by trading Narron, who had shared the catching work after Thurman Munson lost his life in an airplane crash three months ago. They also subtracted one of their leading frustration cases, Beattie, the former Ivy Leaguer who beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in his first complete game during the 1978 World Series but who never capitalized on his new fame thereafter. The trading of Chambliss was expected after the Yankees signed Jim Spencer to a four-year contract this week. But the 30-year-old first baseman, who survived trade rumors a year ago, remained a symbol of the Yankees’ past success. His dramatic home run in the ninth inning of the final game won the 1976 playoff against the Kansas City Royals. Cerone, a star at Seton Hall University, is 25 years old and batted .239 last summer with seven home runs and 63 runs batted in for the Blue Jays. Underwood, who is 26, lost his first nine decisions but then finished the season with a won-lost record of 9-16 as the best pitcher on the Toronto staff. He started 32 games, finished 12, struck out 127 batters and closed with an ear-ned-run average of 3.69. But he joins a staff that already includes celebrity left-handers like Ron Guidry and Tommy John.
and defense, a word of warning. The first step beyond confidence is overconfidence and at Illinois they will find a team that is much better than its overall 1-6-1 record would indicate. The lllini are healthy and coming off a fine 17-17 tie at Minnesota. They are hungry and have been in most of their games. “We’ve made a lot of progress from last year,” admitted Coach Gary Moeller, “but right now Ohio State is the hottest team in the country. They know what they’re doing and they’re doing it well.” Although Ohio State has averaged 47 points and 536 yards in each of its last three games, while posting two shutouts and allowing a total of only six points, the Buckeyes have not been able to break away from unimpressive and lOth-ranked Michigan. The two perennial contenders are tied for the Big Ten lead with 5-0 records with Purdue, 41, still very much in the race. Michigan will be home against Wisconsin Saturday while Purdue plays at lowa. Minnesota will be at Indiana and Michigan State at Northwestern. While Ohio State was blasting Michigan State 42-0 last Saturday, Michigan and Purdue both

had problems. Michigan needed a desperation touchdown pass on the last play of the game to defeat Indiana 27-21 following a controversial decision and Purdue had to go all out for a 20-16 triumph over Northwestern. Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler, who insists nobody in the Big Ten can be overlooked this year, issued another warning and said “Wisconsin has had a lot of bad breaks this year, on and off the field ... This team has fought back from adversity many times and even though they’ve lost six games, they’ve been in many of them right down to the wire ... Against Indiana, Wisconsin was inside the 10-yard line twice and ended up losing the game 3-0, and you know how Indiana played us Saturday.” Michigan might not have as much trouble with Wisconsin as Purdue might encounter at lowa where Coach Hayden Fry said: “We’re playing with unity. We might be the slowest team in America but we try, gosh dang it, we try.” Big Ten Conference Conference.. All.
