Blazing away Perfect Portland keeps Cotton's hair white

By ALEXSACHARE AP Sports Writer Cotton Fitzsimmons doesn’t play any vacations in Portland, Ore. In fact, he’d just as soon not make any business trips to the Rose City, either. “It’s damn tough to win here. I’m getting tired of it,” said Fitzsimmons, coach of the Kansas City Kings. Not even a trio of three-point goals by Kansas City’s Otis Birdsong in the final 90 seconds could keep the Kings from dropping a 90-88 decision to the Portland Trail Blazers Tuesday night. The Blazers are now 7-0, the best start in their 10 seasons in the National Basketball Association. Five of the victories have come at the Portland Memorial Coliseum, where the Blazers have played before 105 consecutive sellouts of 12,666. la other NBA games, the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Phoenix Suns 114-108, the San Antonio Spurs stopped the Boston Celtics 129-120, the San Diego Clippers defeated the Denver Nug-

Portland, which has held its opponent under 90 points five times this season, was leading 88-79 with 1:46 remaining when Birdsong began firing from long range. “It’s only a desperation thing,” he said. “We didn’t set up for them, we just took them. I happened to be in the right spot.” He hit three in a row, tying the score with 32 seconds remaining. As Portland worked for a shot, the Kings were called for kicking the ball, which meant the 24-second clock was reset and the Blazers were able to play for the final shot of the game. The Blazers worked the ball inside to Tom Owens, who missed an eight-footer. But for-

ward Kermit Washington leaped over Reggie King, tipped the ball off the backboard and into the net at the buzzer. Birdsong led all scorers with 29 points and Phil Ford added 20 points and 11 assists for Kansas City. Owens led the balanced Blazer scoring with 17. Clippers 132, Nuggets 127 Lloyd Free scored 11 of his 32 points in the first quarter as San Diego exploded for 40 points and went on to a hand the winless Nuggets their sixth stright loss. David Thompson had 36 points for the losers. Lakers 102, Jazz 87 Los Angeles clinched its victory with a 14-5 burst to start the final period, opening up a commanding 86-70 lead. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Cooper led the Lakers’ balanced attack with 17 points apiece. Spurs 129, Celtics 120 George Gervin and Larry Kenon scored 28 points apiece and led a fourth-quarter surge that carried San Antonio past Boston. The score was tied 100-100

Pacers come apart under Knick press

NEW YORK (AP) - They are the youngbloods, the baby backcourtmen, the guards who must come through if the New York Knicks are to climb back to respectability. They came through Tuesday night, Ray Williams and Michael Ray Richardson leading an aggressive pressure defense that helped the Knicks to an easy 136-112 victory over the Indiana Pacers. “They’ve got to harness their raw power, that’s all they’ve got to do, and they can be terrific,” said Knicks Coach Red Holzman. “I thought they did it pretty well tonight. They’re not robots, 1 expect them to go haywire once in awhile, but if they can stay under control most of the time, we’ll be okay.” The Knicks broke it open early, outscoring the Pacers 31-10 starting with a turnaround jumper by rookie center Bill Cartwright with 7:57 to go in the first quarter and ending with a Toby Knight jumper 51 seconds into the second period that made it 41-20. The outcome was never in question after that, the

before the Spurs broke the game open with a 26-10 surge, Gervin getting eight points and Kenon seven in that spurt. Dave Cowens had 32 points and Larry Bird 22 for the Celtics. Bulls 108, Nets 103 Rookie David Greenwood sank three free throws in the final 36 seconds to help the Bulls beat the Nets. Greenwood, a fir-st-round draft choice from UCLA, scored a pro-high 20 points. Hawks 121, Cavs 111 The Hawks outscored the Cavs 34-20 in the second period to take command. John Drew poured in 27 points to top Atlanta while Mike Mitchell had 35 for Cleveland. Bucks 114, vSuns 108 Milwaukee raised its record to 6-1, best in the Midwest Division, by handing the Suns their fourth straight loss. Marques Johnson led the way with 32 points and Brian Winters hit a clutch jumper in the final minute to put the game away.

Knicks leading by as many as 26 points and never by less than 12. Knight scored 34 points, 22 of them in the first half, as the Knicks rolled up their highest point total of the season. Cartwright added 24, Williams 21 and Richardson 17, but it was the Knicks’ tenacious defense that kept the Pacers at bay. “We like to go out there and put on the pressure,” said Williams. “We try to press against teams that can’t handle the pressure well.” The Pacers, who have committed more turnovers than any other team in the National Basketball Association, were perfect targets for the Knicks’ press. Indiana turned the ball over 15 times in the first half and never recovered, despite a career-high 37 points by Alex English and 28 by James Edwards. The other three Indiana starters, forward Mike Bantom and guards Johnny Davis and Billy Knight, combined for just 11 points. “Wd can’t have that many people not have good ballgames,” said Pacers Coach Bobby Leonard.

Football fans now worshipping at Temple

By HERSCHEL NISSENSON AP Sports Writer Quick, who’s the coach at Temple University? No, it’s not Harry Litwack, although he was the basketball coach there for 21 years, winning 373 games, and it’s not Josh Cody, his predecessor, who won 122 games in 10 seasons. You might be halfway right if you said Don Casey, but he’s the current basketball coach. We’re talking about the football coach. You mean Temple has a football team? Isn’t Temple a basketball school? Yes, and a good one, but it’s a pretty good football school, too. The legendary Pop Warner coached there from 1933-38 and Ray Morrison, famed as the architect of Southern Methodist’s aerial circus of the ’2os and '3os, coached there from 194048. The current coach, in his 10th season, is Wayne Hardin, the same Wayne Hardin who led Navy to a 38-22-2 record from 1959-64 and coached the 1960 and 1963 Heisman Trophy winners, Joe Bellino and Roger Staubach. Temple University was founded in 1884 as a nonsectarian institution designed to serve able and deserving students of limited means. More than 90

Armstrong won't blame defense

CHICAGO (AP) - Hold on now, don’t put all the blame on the defense in the Chicago Bears’ 30-27 loss to the Minnesota Vikings who scored in the last 13 seconds Sunday. “Just because the defense is last on the field, it shouldn’t have to take all the blame for a loss,” said Bear Coach Neill Armstrong. “When I coached the defense and we lost, I used to think it was all the defense’s fault,” said Armstrong, formerly defensive coordinator for the Vikings before taking the Bear

head job last year. “But when you lose, the offense has to score more. “If we had more points, or even one more first down, we wouldn’t have lost Sunday. I know it’s the defense’s job to stop the other team and they feel responsible but that isn’t necessarily so.” The fact was brought up that the 496 yards gained Sunday were the most by a Bear team since 1965 when the great Gale Sayers scored six touchdowns in one game. But Armstrong said Tuesday,

years later, Temple, which has been a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania university since 1965, has a widely diversified student body of some 33,000. The university is the largest employer in the North Philadelphia area, with some 9,500 persons employed at the main campus and the Health Sciences Center. But, says Hardin, “There are people in Philadelphia who don’t even know we’re in Philadelphia.” If they don’t, they’re learning. Temple has posted seven winning seasons under Hardin, who has become the school’s winningest football coach ever with a 63-32-3 mark, including 61 this year, the only setback a 10-9 loss to 12thranked Pitt. “We get kidded about our short, fat kids,” Hardin says. “They may be 6-2 and 270 pounds but we don’t check ’em in the 40. They may not be too fast over 40 yards, but from here to there they’re not too bad, and that’s all we ask of ’em. “Our players are great kids. They work their butts off. They weren’t highly recruited, they’re not guys everybody wanted, so they’ve got something to prove.”

“I’d rather have had only 200 yards and 31 points instead of 496 and 27 points. “Every loss hurts,” said Armstrong, “but that one hurt a lot more because I thought we had the game won and we should have won it, but Jimmy Edwards was the big factor. It’s hard to figure. “We watched him against the (New York) Jets and he bobbled the ball three times on kicks. He’s a first-year man in the league and we didn’t know that much about him. Maybe he’s just inconsistent. But then

When it comes to picking bowl teams, it’s not only whether you win or lose but where you play the game, not necessarily how. For example, Florida State is one of the few remaining unbeaten-untied teams but don’t hold your breath waiting for the Seminoles to be invited to the Orange Bowl, even if they go 11-0. The Orange Bowl, like any other bowl, wants teams whose followers will arrive well before the game say a week or so and spend lots of money. The Orange Bowl people are afraid the Florida State supporters will drive down from Tallahassee on game day and leave shortly after the final gun. Notre Dame Coach Dan Devine is no Knute Rockne when it comes to inspirational, firebreathing pep talks. But he recalls his days at Missouri when he wanted to fire his team up for Nebraska. He played a record of the Nebraska fight song over and over, intending to bring things to a head by smashing it on the locker room floor. Devine forgot one little thing. Plastic is a prime ingredient in phonograph records and when he hurled it to the floor...it bounced.

maybe he found himself and he’ll do it again.” Edwards repeatedly returned punts and kickoffs for big yardage to give the Vikings good field position, but the killer was a 65-yard kickoff return which set up Minnesota’s next-to-last touchdown and got the Vikings back within striking distance. “They did a good job of blocking us and we did a poor job of covering on the kicks,” said Armstrong, who was*' unable to use Len Walterscheid and Steve Schubert all the time because of injuries.

Cubs acquire young catcher CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs have obtained catcher Mike O’Berry from Boston as the player to be named later in a mid-season deal that sent second baseman Ted Sizemore to the Red Sox. O’Berry, a 25-year-old righthanded hitter, split the 1979 baseball season between the Red Sox and Pawtucket. Doby resigns CHICAGO (AP) Larry Doby has resigned as batting instructor for the Chicago White Sox. Doby, the first black to play in the American League, had been with the White Sox as a coach, manager for the last part of the 1978 season and finally batting instructor.
