Little, big men propel NBA Rockets past Pacers
By The Associated Press After bombing on the road, the Houston Rockets brought their show home. “I was a little nervous before this game,” said Calvin Murphy. "We had played three and lost three, and we were a little tired and a little frustrated. ” Murphy and his Houston teammates, however, felt considerably better after a 116-112 National Basketball Association triumph over the Indiana Pacers Wednesday night. .Murphy had a big hand in Houston’s first victory of the season with 22 points. a sub-par game against the New York Knicks, when Bill Cartwright held him to 17 points and 15 rebounds. But Wednesday night, Indiana’s James Edwards was hardly as effective. “When I rebound well, I can score, so I don’t worry about that,” said Malone. “We have a lot of shooters. After the Houston-Indiana game was tied at 47 at the half, Murphy hit 14 third-quarter points and Rick Barry added 10 as the Rockets pulled away to a 10-point lead, which Indiana could never overcome. The Pacers came within six at 103-97 with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter. But Tom Henderson and Major Jones hit quick baskets to hold off the Indiana surge. announced Wednesday by board chairman Mary F. Hulman. Cloutier, elected to the Speedway’s top positions after the death of Tony Hulman in 1977, has been associated with Hulman family business interests for many years. He will remain as treasurer and a director of the corporation in addition to being involved in other family business matters, Mrs. Hulman said. Cooper’s selection was an-

Atlanta led 95-89 with 4:36 to play. Then Phegley scored seven straight points to put the Bullets in front to stay 96-95. Celtics 127, Cavaliers 108 Dave Cowens led seven Boston players in double figures with 21 points as the unbeaten Celtics rallied in the second half to beat Cleveland. Held scoreless in the first half, Cedric Maxwell poured in 10 points in the opening minutes of the third period. That triggered a decisive 41-point

For the past two years, Cooper has been responsible for national sports programs of the Coca-Cola Co. in Atlanta. Mrs. Hulman, whose husband purchased the Speedway after World War II and built the Indy 500 into one of the world’s major sporting events, said the selection of the 45-year-old Cooper insures the continuity of professional management.
Rose pondering Purdue's
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Lee Rose surprised a lot of people in his first season as Purdue’s head basketball coach by finishing in a tie for the Big Ten championship. Now, he says he’s worried about what he can do for an encore in the 1979-80 season. “We’ll be enthusiastic and we’ll play hard. That’s all I can promise,” said Rose, who guided the Boilermakers to a 278 mark and a second place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. “It’s downright scary,” Rose said as he prepared for the this week’s start of preseason practice. “The alumni didn’t expect

Erving scored 14 of his points in the first half when the Sixers took control of the game. Bucks 125, Nuggets 97 Marques Johnson scored 29 points and Junior Bridgeman had 23 to lead Milwaukee over
She also reiterated her family’s intent to retain ownership of the Speedway, where the 1980 race is scheduled for May 25. “My primary effort will be to perpetuate Tony Hulman’s philosophy of presenting the 500 for the people of Indiana and racing fans everywhere,” Cooper said. The naming of Cooper was praised by Pat Patrick, chairman of Championship Auto Racing Teams, the rival racing organization of USAC. “Cooper is an excellent

Forwards Arnette Hallman and Drake Morris join guard Brian Walker and Carroll in the list of returning starters. However, Rose says replacing guard Jerry Sichting is a major problem. The Purdue coach said he believes “it will be impossible to immediately replace a scoring guard like Sichting. A player

Sonics 112, Lakers 110 Jack Sikma and rookie James Bailey each scored nine points in the fourth quarter as Seattle defeated Los Angeles in a game marked by the loss of Laker guard Earvin “Magic” Johnson to injury. also figures prominently in the picture. However, he’s still in line for further experience at the position. Morris could be moved to the backcourt, but then Rose would have to find someone to fill his role as a quick cornerman. The other candidates include holdovers John Anthrop, Jon Kitchel and Roosevelt Barnes who were used sparingly last season. The Boilermakers have scheduled a preseason intrasquad game in Fort Wayne, Tuesday, Nov. 6. On Nov. 10, Purdue hosts the Bulgaria National team. The season gets under way Friday, Nov. 30. Hurricane birdied this golf course PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A group of 160 golfers scheduled to tee off in the $200,000 Pensacola Open today was hoping to do what Hurricane Frederic literally couldn’t do take apart the 7,133-yard Perdido Bay Country Club course. The storm, which ravaged the Florida and Alabama Gulf Coast five weeks ago, hit almost dead center on the course area, knocking down about 150 small trees and a few bridges. Fifteen plush homes were destroyed in the area when the 100 mph winds hit Sept. 12. “We were generally pretty lucky,” says tournament publicist Bill Mathers. “We lost about 150 trees and a couple of little bridges. One of the bridges we were going to take out anyway, so we really didn’t lose much. “If you go out and play the course, you say ‘there used to be small tree here or there.’ but really most of the change you wouldn’t notice. The course overall is in excellent condition.” Bears waive Deloplaine, add new linebacker CHICAGO (AP) The Chi cago Bears have announced that running back Jack Deloplaine has been placed on waivers to make room on their 45man National Football League roster for linebacker Mark Merrill, who was signed as a free agent.
