People in the news Names amusing and even amazing CHICAGO (AP) A man who comes across thousands of names while doing his job says some names can be amusing, and some amazing. An Ardmore. Okla., woman who had tonsillitis and a baby at the same time named her child Tonsillitis Jackson, says Wilfred Brand, title operations officers of the Chicago Title Insurance Co. A brother was named Meningitis and three sisters were named Appendicitis, Laryngitis and Peritonitis, said Brand. Brand, who has access to 1.2 million names in the company’s computerized judgment index file, says his work qualifies him as an amateur onomatologist (one who studies the origins of proper names). Carbon Petroleum Dubbs was Wilmette (111.) village president during the 1930 s and became wealthy for perfecting an oil cracking process. Brand said a Honolulu gem dealer named his daughters for notes of the musical scale Dodo, Rere, Mimi, Fafa, Soso, Lola and Octavia. . Lear Jet designer William Powell Lear called his daughter Chanda Lear, said Brand. And Judge Learned Hand spent 40 years on the bench. “There was a deed that conveyed property to Elif Srepap,” recalled Brand. "Backwards, the name is File Papers.” • CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) A 19-year-old Charlotte woman filed suit Thursday against Penthouse magazine, alleging she was coerced into using cocaine and having sex with a photographer during a “Pet of the Month” photography session. The lawsuit filed in Mecklenburg County Superior Court by Teresa Mackey also claims she was not paid for the centerfold photography session. The suit accuses the New York-based magazine, its publisher Bob Guccione and art director Joe Brooks, a photographer, of fraud, and seeks more than $1.6 million in damages. A lawyer for the magazine, Joseph Kraft, told the Charlotte Observer the allegations were “false and without foundation in fact. It is a lie.” Brooks, the suit charges, “lured” Ms. Mackey to Florida and promised her she would be “Pet of the Year” a title worth $150,000, in order to have sex with her during a photography session in August in a hotel near Miami. In three days, Ms. Mackey’s suit says, Brooks took 1,728 pictures and forced her to have “continuous” sexual relations with him. • WASHINGTON (AP) Comedienne Carol Burnett says reading is fun, and to prove it she imitated her favorite childhood literary figure with a piercing scream of Tarzan’s jungle cry in the East Room of the White House. “You see what you can get out of reading,” she told children Thursday at a White House ceremony. “It’s terrific.” Her performance, which brought laughter from the children, was part of a promotion of “Reading is Fun Day,” a nationwide event to promote reading among youngsters by giving them free books. The hostess was President Carter’s daughter Amy. After speeches by first lady Rosalynn Carter, NBC News anchorman John Chancellor and others, the 200 or so children who were the guests were invited to the State Dining Room for cookies, then out to the South Lawn for balloons and, of course, a free book.
House Call Lysine for cold sores?
By G. Timothy Johnson, M.D. Dear Dr. Johnson: Would you comment on a recent article that said lysine can be effective in treatment of cold sores? -- Clyde H., Teaneck, N. J. Dear Clyde: Before commenting, I should note that cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus, which is notoroiously difficult to treat. Many cures for herpes infections have been suggested in the past, but they have turned out either to be ineffective or possibly dangerous. So, any new claim for a treatment for herpes infections - cold sores or genital sores - is usually greeted with skepticism. Nonetheless, many researchers are looking diligently for such cures, and there do seem to be some exciting possibilities on the horizon. The article you referred to suggests that lysine, a natural substance, an amino acid that is available without prescription at drug stores and other outlets, might be an effective treatment for cold sores. The original work with lysine was reported in 1978, and it has been continued. But most experts are reserving judgment on whether lysine is effective as a treatment for herpes infections. Lysine appears to be relatively safe, since it is a normal component of our daily diet. It is one of those “essential amino acids” that we must get through our food supply. Because the research is still in progress, I can’t give you any firm scientific data to support or refute the claims made for lysine. But I do understand why persons who are bothered by these vexing cold sores are anxious to give it a try.
Dear Dr. Johnson: I am 65, a man with a history of coronary artery disease. My physician recently diagnosed me as also having low thyroid function, and now he wants to start me on thyroid medication. At the same time, however, he’s referring me to a specialist, and says it may be necessary to hospitalize me as I begin taking the medication. Is all this really necessary? - Samuel G., Portland, Ore. Dear Samuel: Coronary artery disease means the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen to do its work. Thyroid medication usually makes the heart work harder whether am-

Two spades. Before deciding what to do, it might be best first of all to discuss what partner’s spade bid means. Most over calls in the one level have 8 to 12 highcard points and a good suit. It follows that North’s overcall should tentatively be regarded as merely a competitive bid for a part score and not the equivalent of an opening bid even though it is true that North may have one. It is very unlikely that this hand, which rates as less than

Famous Jazz Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson will appear in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at DePauw's Kresge Auditorium. Ferguson, who will also appear with the DPU band during halftime of Saturday's football game, has a career dating back to the Big Band Era. He has played with such jazz greats as Boyd Raeburn and Stan Kenton. ' Back in the 1930 s and 19405, one of the popular big-band acts was Kay Kyser and his Kollege of Musical Knowledge. Kyser played host on a quiz-with-music show on the radio for 13 years, conducting his band and introducing other acts. Now 73 years old and a fixture on the Christian Science lecture circuit, he has been making a rueful confession lately: The “old perfesser,” as he used to be called, couldn’t read music or play any instrument, even though he made a lot of money leading a band. “I brag about it now, but I was anxious to hide it back then,” Kyser told an audience in Milwaukee this week. The former entertainer quit show business in 1950. • AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Lady Bird Johnson was / awakened and rousted from her fifth-story penthouse apartment early today after fire broke out in the third-floor facilities of a television station once owned by the Johnson family. Secret service agents escorted Mrs. Johnson, widow of President Lyndon B. Johnson, safely out of the building, which houses KTBC-TV, a CBS affiliate. Rush Evans, manager of KTBC, said the building sustained considerable smoke and water damage, but that it would have no visible effect on station operations. • He’s had a week to mull over the fact that Richard M. Nixon is buying a house in the next block, just over his backyard fence, and Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. has decided that “I don’t care.” The former Harvard University historian and former aide to John F. Kennedy said: “I was on Nixon’s enemy list, so I don’t get any pleasure out of his moving here. I guess this marks my progress in life. When I lived in Cambridge, Mass., I had John Kenneth Galbraith over the back fence. Now I have ended up with Richard M. Nixon.” Nixon’s new home reportedly will be a $750,000 four-story town house at 142 East 65th Street, between Lexington and Third Avenues. Schlesinger lives on 64th Street, just behind the Nixon house.
ple oxygen is available or not. Because of this, there is some concern that the increased workload for the heart may cause problems, since the blocked arteries feeding the heart muscle aren’t able to supply the oxygen needed. . Therefore, it’s not unusual to hospitalize persons who have significant coronary artery disease and need thyroid medication, at least during the first stages of thyroid replacement therapy. Dear Readers: A brief note: The National Fire Prevention and Control Administration estimates that a third of all deaths in residence fires are
an opening bid, has the wherewithal necessary for a game. You raise partner in spades mostly for strategic reasons. There is not much point to bidding two clubs, which not only denies spade support but also makes it easy for West to bid again at a low level. 2. Three spades. This time game prospects are much brighter, and the jump-raise to three spades reflects those prospects. In effect, you’re asking partner to bid four spades unless his overcall was based on minimum values. Considering your good trump fit, this hand rates as an opening bid. If your partner is in the same happy position, four spades can probably be made. 3. One notrump. Game is almost out of the question, but even so it’s much better to bid one notrump than to pass. It would be wrong to bid two clubs; that would indicate a
related to smoking. This danger of course is thus added on to the other known hazards of smoking that can seriously damage your health. better club suit and would also understate the all-around value of your hand. 4. Three notrump. You don’t invite game here you bid it. It’s hard to imagine a hand North can have where you don’t belong in game. A jump to two notrump would be a horrible underbid. The bidding might suddenly die right there. North may dislike notrump and bid four spades (or hearts), but you have fully adequate values for a suit contract also. 5. Pass. You shouldn’t go looking for trouble by bidding two hearts. If North lacked heart support and now bid two spades, you’d clearly be worse off for having tried to “rescue” partner. This is the type of hand that suggests there may be a misfit, and experience indicates that the sooner you “let go” in misfit hands the better off you will be.
