111 researcher eyes plants as source of oil substitutes
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) An Indiana University researcher is working on a meth od to decrease the cost of Squeezing a petroleum-substi-tute from a cactus-like plant found mainly in the African deserts. r The plant, called euphorbia, produces sterols, oil-like chemicals similar to the chemical compounds found in crude oil, said David Biesboer, an IU post-doctoral biology research associate. But the process now is costly and time-consuming, and the researcher said he has been studying ways to help the plants produce more sterols. “It may be feasible in the near future to use these particular compounds as crude oil,” he said. “But it would take a land area the size of Arizona and New Mexico to produce enough oil (this way) to satisfy America’s daily requirement. “The same products we get {rom oil can be gotten from these plants, including a whole range of plastics and other synthetic materials,” said Biesboer, who recently won an 3«rard for his work at the Botanical Society of America annilal meeting. Thursday, claims Widgery presented to the president of Robo Wash, Inc., a plan to expand the sales of the North Kansas City car wash equipment company. The indictment does not mention Hartke. Widgery then received Robo Wash stock in return for a guarantee that he would generate $135,000 in accrued net profit for the company by Sept. 30, 1977, the indictment alleged. Widgery told Robo Wash he had made sales of equipment totaling $250,000 although he had not, according to the indictment. Widgery received commissions for sales he never made, and the purchase orders were used as collateral for loans obtained from the Goppert Bank
ts, estimates that he could produce a barrel of crude oil substitute from an experimental euphorbia field for about S2O not much more than the price tag on a barrel of OPEC oil, Biesboer said. The method involves storing pieces of adult plant in flasks that contain life-sustaining nutrients and adding various chemicals to assess their effect on the sterols produced by the plant’s tissue, he said
Masked informant leads police to site
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Officials say they will stop digging in a yard today if their search for human fetuses continues to be unsuccessful. Authorities said they began searching after receiving an informant’s tip that illegal abortions were allegedly performed in the home of Clifford Redwine. Friday, authorities in this central Indiana town led a masked informant to the lawn where they have been digging since Wednesday. The informant was taken to the site twice Friday. and Trust Co. of Kansas City, the indictment charged. It said Widgery caused officials of the SBA in Indianapolis to issue authorizations and loan agreements against SBA regulations. The agreement allegedly was submitted to Springs Valley National Bank in French Lick, Ind., and the bank issued a $112,000 loan to Widgery. The indictment said Robo Wash became financially involved with Midwest Cabinet Manufacturing Co. in South Bend, Ind., through Widgery’s influence, and Widgery gained control of the company. Through his association wih Midwest Cabinet, the indictment said, Widgery was able to misapply funds intended for the firm.
Sometimes a growth-promot-ing substance is added, while other times Biesboer adds a chemical known to end up in the plant’s sterols. When he finally identifies substances that increase sterol production in positive ways, they can be added to euphorbia fields to step up their sterolmaking capabilities, Biesboer said, adding that such a discovery might make sterols a viable oil substitute.
vent recognition, the informant showed police areas where the fetuses are alleged to be buried. No fetuses have been found at the location, said Muncie Police Chief Richard Heath. Bones found buried in the yard Thursday night were animal bones, deputy Delaware County Coroner Roger Fossum said. The tip that led to the search came after Redwine was charged last week with possession of drugs and stolen property, police said. Redwine, now free on bond, was questioned but not charged in the current investigation.
