Stiff challenges seen for unbeatens

By WILLIAM N. WALLACE c. 1979 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK The games of major interest in the National Football League on Sunday will be played in Houston and Philadelphia, where two of the league’s four remaining undefeated teams, the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers, face strong oppositon from the Oilers and the Eagles, respectively , The two home teams have each won three of their first four games. The Browns came out of their big victory over Dallas on Monday night with two of their most important players injured, Greg Pruitt and Lyle Alzado. Both say they will play, although Pruitt, who has a sprained knee, is listed as doubtful and Alzado* questionable. Calvin Hill would be Pruitt’s replacement at running back. Except for Earl Campbell, who leads the league in rushing with 493 yards, the Oilers have been an erratic bunch. Their defense has given up 98 points. The favorite? Houston, by 4Vfe points, which reflects the home-team status, the Cleveland injuries and possible euphoria remaining from Monday night. The Steelers continue to win in spite of injuries, a compliment to their reserve strength. This week Lynn Swann will not play; his replacement is Jim Smith, a third-year pro from Michigan who has had plenty of experience. In winning their first four games, the Steelers have outscored their opponents by 45-7 in the fourth quarter. The Eagles are a tough bunch who have added some needed firepower to their offense with Tony Franklin, the barefoot kicker, who has booted seven field goals. Wilbert Montgomery will know he has been in a game when he is through running at the that Pittsburgh defense. The Steelers are favored by 5M> points. Previews of the other games follow, with won-lost records in parentheses. American Conference Miami (4-0) at Jets (1-3) After missing a game, Bob Griese is ready to play for the Dolphins. That is bad news for the Jet defense, which has given up 34 points a game. The Miami defense has allowed only 45 points in all, fewest of any team. This is an inauspicious matchup for the home team. Betting line: Miami by 5. Denver (3-1) at Oakland (1-3) “We have some problems,” says Tom Flores, the Raider coach, and he is so right. Morris Bradshaw, the receiver, is the ninth Raider to go on the injuredreserve list. Ken Stabler may have to throw 50 passes at a Denver defense that gave up 350 yards to Seattle. The Broncos’

Cincy win, Houston loss settles things in NL West race

ByALEXSACHARE AP Sports Writer There was no champagne in the Cincinnati locker room, no screaming, no horseplay, none of the usual trappings of a title clinching. The Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 3-0 Friday night, assuring themselves of at least a tie for the National League West title. But they were long gone by the time second-place Houston dropped a 6-5 decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers on the West Coast, clinching the division title for the Reds outright. “We’ll celebrate tomorrow 12 hours won’t make any difference,” said Reds third baseman Ray Knight. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh

Ryan, Palmer tuning up for AL playoffs

By 808 GREENE AP Sports Writer Nolan Ryan of the California Angels and Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles warmed up for the American League playoff opener with vastly different results. Both are coming off injuries and neither lasted more than 513 innings. But Ryan was a loser Friday as the Texas Rangers blanked California 5-0 while Palmer was an easy winner in Baltimore’s 14-6 rout of the Cleveland Indians. Still, both were happy with their performances. “We had planned for me to go only five innings or so,” said Ryan, who suffered a pulled

Pirates took a giant stride toward the National League East title by beating the Chicago Cubs 6-1 and climbing two games ahead of the secondplace Montreal Expos, who dropped a 3-2,11-inning decision to the Philadelphia Phillies. In other National League games, the San Diego Padres blanked the San Francisco Giants 2-0 and the New York Mets swept a doubleheader from the St. Louis Cardinals 6-2 and 7-6, the secong game in 11 innings. The Reds trailed Houston by 10 games on July 4, caught the Astros on Aug. 28 and took the lead to stay on Sept. 11. One of the keys to their stretch drive has been the pitching of Pastore, who opened the season

muscle in his elbow July 25. “The only thing that bothered me was I walked three batters. I can’t do that against Baltimore.” Palmer, closing out a frustrating season punctuated by a back injury and tendinitis in his elbow, went 51-3 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs. But he benefitted from a pair of sixrun outbursts by his teammates. “I was pleased with the way I threw the ball,” Palmer said, “but 1 don’t like giving up runs.” As Ryan said: “Any time you are coming off an arm injury, you don't quite have the velocity you did

LAS VEGAS (AP) - “Man, stop the fight,” heavyweight champion Larry Holmes begged the referee. “Look at him all banged up, cut around both eyes. He’s hurt. What do you want me to do —kill him ? ’ ’ Challenger Earnie Shavers, a battered old veteran of 35, hung limply on the ropes. His legs were rubbery. His eyes were glazed. He couldn’t raise his weary arms for defense. “I begged Earnie to quit, too,” Holmes said. “I said, ‘Man, why you hanging on? Why don’t you quit?’ He said, ‘I ain’t quitting. I’m trying to take your title away.’” At two minutes of the 11th round, referee Davey Pearl stepped between Holmes and a battered Shavers, and raised Holmes’ hand as successful defender of the World Boxing

GRIESE: Wears glasses, makes passes Norris Weese starts again at quarterback, with Craig Morton ready as an early replacement. Betting line: Denver by 3. Kansas City (2-2) at Seattle (3-1) The Chief offense has a chance, because the Seahawk defense has been so weak. Opposing passers have completed 63 percent of their attempts for 250 yards a game and have been sacked only five times. Steve Fuller, the Chiefs’ rookie quarterback, has a bruised foot and may be replaced by Mike Livingston. Betting line: Seattle by 6>/ 2 . Buffalo (2-2) at Baltimore (0-4) Bert Jones? Questionable again, with a sore shoulder. Opposing kickers will be the MikeMeyer brothers, Nick with the Bills, Steve with the Colts. Both were recently signed after being cut earlier elsewhere. with Cincinnati but was sent to the minors for nearly two months before rejoining the Reds in late July. “That was the turning point, going down to Indianapolis,” said Pastore, 6-7, who struck out seven Atlanta batters and walked only one. “I went 7-2 down in Triple A and that’s where I learned how to control myself and be a big league pitcher.” Dodgers 6, Astros 5 The Astros looked like they would prolong the race when they scored four runs in the top of the eighth, three on Cesar Cedeno’s home run, to take a 5-1 lead. But the Dodgers squelched their hopes with five runs in the bottom half of the in-

before, but I’m getting real close. 1 didn’t tax it tonight. I was pitching free and easy ... I ought to be ready (for the playoffs).” In other AL games Friday, New York downed Toronto 7-3, Boston stopped Detroit 7-4, Chicago defeated Seattle 3-1, Milwaukee clobbered Minnesota 10-1 and Kansas City crushed Oakland 13-1. Billy Smith drove in six runs with a grand slam homer, a double and a triple to pace Baltimore’s attack. The Orioles scored six runs in both the second and third innings, Smith slamming his homer in the second and his double in the third. “Palmer should be ready for

Council heavyweight crown. Twice the 29-year-old champion pulled himself off the floor once in the seventh from a shattering right to the head, again in the ninth after a halfslip for his 32nd victory and 23rd knockout without a defeat as a pro. Shavers was rushed to the Valley Hospital to have diictors sew up ugly gashes around both eyes. It was a knockdown, dragout brawl reminiscent of the nowlegendary third Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier “Thrilla of Manila’’ in October, 1975 and it turned an affluent crowd of 4,-500, who paid up to $250 a seat, into a wild frenzy at the Caesars Palace Pavilion. The television audience was estimated by ABC-TV at 50 million.

ning. Teddy Martinez doubled, pin-ch-hitter Vic Davalillo singled and Von Joshua singled home Martinez. Derrel Thomas got a bunt single to load the bases and Garvey followed with a grandslam home run. It was Garvey’s 28th homer and gave him 110 runs batted in. “We had a good year,” said Houston Manager Bill Virdon, “but no one likes to finish second. Its been a tough season, lots of close games ... We played well, but we didn’t play well enough to win.” Pirates 6, Cubs 1 Pittsburgh moved closer to the NL East title behind the pitching of Jim Bibby, who baffled Chicago with a four-hit, 11-

next week,” said Baltimore Manager Earl Weaver. “He pitched well enough. I’d like to see him give up no runs, but as long as he got enough work, used all his pitches and didn’t get hurt, that’s good enough for me.” Rangers 5, Angels 0 Ferguson Jenkins handcuffed California on five hits as Texas blanked the Angels. Al Oliver and Buddy Bell drove in firstinning runs for the Rangers. Ryan, who will start against Palmer Wednesday in the opening game of the AL playoffs, gave up two runs in the first inning. But after Bump Wills tripled, Al Oliver doubled and Buddy Bell singled, the California right-hander was untouch-

Holmes, a standup boxer who never has gained the recognition he deserved, proved himself a true champion. He appeared on the verge of being knocked out in the seventh, when he was sent thudding on his back by a Shavers right, but he was in charge at the finish. The three ringside judges gave him nine of the 10 rounds they scored, all except the seventh. Holmes now virtually has run out of suitable opponents until the WBC and the rival World Boxing Association can reach some sort of accomodation to end the split in the division. the league in yards gained, and their defense is third from last in yards allowed. The Giants are almost the opposite, the league’s poorest offense by far and lOth-best defense. If the Giants are to do anything this season, here is a good place to start. Betting line: New Orleans by 6. Tampa Bay (4-0) at Chicago (2-2) Following last Sunday’s 21-6 victory over the Rams, the Buccaneers are being taken seriously by everyone. The Bears have lost a fourth fullback, Dave Williams, and now play Jack Deloplaine next to Walter Payton. Chicago will be desperate for some passing yards against a tough Buccaneer defense. Betting line: Chicago by 2. Minnesota (2-2) at Detroit (1-3) lose, then Tampa Bay will have a three-game lead in their division. When the Lions and the Vikings last played, in December (Detroit won by 45-14), the quarterbacks were Gary Danielson and Fran Tarkenton. Now they are Jeff Komlo and Tommy Kramer. Quite a-difference. Betting line: Detroit by 3. St. Louis (1-3) at Los Angeles (2-2) The Ram offense has stumbled, and Coach Ray Malavasi has made changes at running back; he will try Wendell Tyler and Elvis Peacock for more speed. Vince Ferragamo relieved Pat Haden at quarterback in the last game. The Cardinals have undone the good work of their quarterback, Jim Hart, with fumbles and sacks. Betting line: Los Angeles by 6. Washington (3-1) at Atlanta (2-2) The Redskins have played well. Their surprising contributor has been a free-agent rookie running back, Buddy Hardeman. The Falcon offense, so potent in early games, collapsed against Detroit. This is an inconsistent team. Betting line: Atlanta by 3. Interconference Cincinnati ((M) at Dallas (3-1) Ken Anderson returns as the Bengal quarterback after skipping one game. But his wide receivers are not well Billy Brooks is out and Issac Curtis is questionable. The Cowboys never claimed they would win them all this season. Betting line: Dallas by BVfe. San Francisco «M) at San Diego (3-1) - The Chargers are much the better team from every standpoint, although the 49ers no longer run three plays and punt. O. J. Simpson is good for about 50 yards a game for them. Betting line: San Diego by 13Vfe. Monday Night New England (3-1) at Green Bay (1-3) Packer fans have been heard booing this season, heretofore a heresy. They do not like Bart Starr’s conservative offense and the final scores. The Patriots regain another weapon for this interconference game, Horace Ivory, their fastest running back. Betting line: New England by 8.

strikeout gem. Dave Parker provided the power, clubbing a two-run homer. Phils 3, Expos 2 Montreal literally threw its game away in the 11th inning. With two out, Greg Gross reached third when his grounder skipped past third baseman Larry Parrish for an error and left fielder Warren Cromartie overthrew second base for another error. Woodie Fryman, 36, issued an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Greg Luzinski before Keith Moreland hit a 2-0 pitch for the game-winning single. But the Expos weren’t conceding anything. “We’re still not out of it,” insisted Tony Perez. “The Pirates

Brewers 10, Twins 1 The Brewers clinched second place as Cecil Cooper knocked in five runs with a pair of doubles and his 24th homer. Milwaukee set a club record with its 94th triumph of the year. Royals 13, A’s 1 Royals catcher Darrell Porter scored three times to boost his season total to 99 as Kansas City beat Oakland. A’s and Detroit Tigers. White Sox 3, Mariners 1 Wayne Nordhagen slammed two solo home runs to back the eight-hit pitching of Steve Trout, 11-8, and lead Chicago over Seattle. Red Sox 7, Tigers 4 Tom Poquette had two doubles and a single, driving in three runs to power Boston over Detroit. The victory also enabled the Red Sox to clinch third place in the American League East. Yankees 7, Blue Jays 3 Reggie Jackson slammed his 28th home run, a three-run blast, as New York toppled Toronto.
