Dear Abby: Ma Beil's toil
DEAR ABBY: A mother wrote complaining that her daughter preferred calling relatives long distance to thank them for Christmas, birthday and graduation gifts rather than write thank you notes. You said, “A letter is better, but a telephone call is better than nothing.” Well, I work for the telephone company, and more and more I am faced with the upleasant task of disconnecting the telephone service of a parent or grandparent lor non payment of a large telephone bill because some child or grandchild has made long-distance calls all over the country without the slightest thought of the cost involved. Perhaps we have made it too easy to dial long distance or even overseas, promoting the idea of long-distance calls because it s more profitable for us. If a phone bill is not paid because of indiscriminate calling by irresponsible children (or adults), the responsible paying customers will end up paying the bill in higher monthly rates. Please let your readers know this, Abby. DOING MY JOB DEAR DOING: Consider it done! Readers, did you get the message? DEAR ABBY: I’m in love with a super dude, but he has one very bad fault. Bad breath. Abby, you couldn’t ask lor a nicer guy, but this one fault is really hard to take —especially when we kiss. It’s not just alter he s eaten onions or garlic. It’s all the time. He’s a business person who deals with the public, so I worry about what other people might think. I keep thinking maybe he needs to see a dentist, but holy cow. the man is 33 and I hate to suggest it. I have an idea he knows his breath is bad because he s always sucking on mints or chewing gum, but it doesn t help.
Heloise: Small appliances and dorm cooking
DEAR HELOISE: Hi! We are recent high school graduates looking forward to our first year in college this fall. One of the last projects during our senior year in home economics class was to come up with ideas for dorm cooking. Most colleges only allow a popcorn popper and an electric percolator. But did you kndV it’s possible to cook a delicious meal with a thermos bottle and an iron? All you need is a pint-sized and quart-sized thermos bottle, an iron and something to boil water in (the percolator or popcorn popper works
fine). You can make all kinds of instant foods by just pouring the boiling water into the thermos to which instant oatmeal, soup, coffee, tea, whatever has been added. You can make spaghetti and meatballs by placing strands of spaghetti into the thermos and pouring boiling water over it. Put the lid on and set it aside for about one and a half hours. Open and pour off the water; add your bottled or canned meat sauce and sprinkle on the cheese makes one serving. Canned stews, soups and chili can be heated in a popcorn popper.

He’s a very sensitive guy and I wouldn't hurt his feelings for the world. Somebody should tell him. But who? CHICKEN IN DETROIT DEAR CHICKEN: You! It would be an act of kindness. If a dentist can’t help him, he should see a doctor. Chronic bad breath can be a symptom of a serious physical ailment, and masking it with breath-fresheners, mints, mouthwashes or chewing gum is NOT a proper solution. If you love him, tell him! DEAR ABBY: My husband wears a hearing aid, and when we re at a cocktail party he turns it off and sits in a corner all by himself. Many people think he’s anti social or snobbish, but it’s not true. He says that when some folks (especially women) get a few drinks in them, they tend to laugh and shriek extra loud, and the sound, when amplified through his hearing aid, feels like a “knife” in his ear. Abby, you would be doing people who wear hearing aids a big favor if you asked your readers to be a little more con siderate. SAN DIEGO DEAR SAN: I can ASK, but I fear that my plea will fall on deaf ears. DEAR ABBY: Can a person ever REALLY forgive and forget? LEE DEAR LEE: Not as long as that person keeps asking himself that question. Problems? You’ll feel better if you get them off your chest. For a personal reply write to Abby, Box 69700, Los Angeles, Cal. 90069. Please enclose stamped, self-addressed envelope.
What can you do with an iron? Make grilled cheese sandwiches! Butter the bread, put the cheese in between and wrap the sandwich in aluminum foil. Place the iron on it at a high setting and “press” until the cheese and butter have melted. Frozen waffles and pancakes, English muffins, etc., can also be heated in this way. I guess only a starving co-ed would have the nerve to eat concoctions like this, but they can really be good. Just use your imagination! Besides, anything’s better than cafeteria food! “Withit” Senior Class ★ * ★
