Worry Clinic
By George W. Crane, Ph D., M D
Rita claims her newspaper saved her from a divorce! For it explained what women fail to realize, namely, the “ghost” that appears in the bedroom when a woman marries a second time. Beware! CASE S-653: Rita R., aged 28, vows her newspaper saved her marriage. “Dr. Crane,” she began, “I married a college sweetheart and we had a beautiful baby girl within the first 2 years. “But my husband was killed in an auto collision a couple of years after our daughter was born. “So I had to go back to work to earn a living, and fortunately obtained a position as history teacher in our local high school. “The principal was a wonderful man and ultimately we began to date. “Well, we fell in love and were married a year ago. “Everything was wonderful for a couple of months, but then he began to grow unduly caustic and fault-finding. “And when we were out in public he would affront me intentionally, even to the extent of walking ahead of me when we strolled down the street. “Although he had been devoted to my little girl, he now even grew irritated with her and would scold her till I would often be reduced to tears. “So I would try to feed her and get her to bed before he and I had our dinner. “Things were growing constantly worse and I couldn’t figure out what had made such a radical change in him: “Then you described such a husband in your ‘Worry Clinic’ and said it is common for widows and divorcees to see this type of behavior if they marry again. “For you said their second husbands vividly conjure up the ghost of their first husbands in the boudoir. “Dr. Crane, women don’t realize this fact so women advice writers thus fail to warn us, but I found your diagnosis was 100 percent accurate. “For you said a wife is naturally not as ardent and

erotically passionate as is her husband, though the man has usually heard so many wild tales about the supposedly excessive ardor of prostitutes and ‘Call’ girls, that he believes all women are wildlv ardent. “So when his wife fails to show similar exaggerated sexual fervor, he begins to imagine she is holding the torch for her first husband. “That’s when you said a ghost of the first husband causes a boudoir triangle to develop! “Her new husband’s ego is thus deflated, since he feels he can’t arouse her ardor as much as he imagines her first husband could, so he tries to get even by caustic criticism and social affronts to her when out in public. “But when the wife grows somewhat calloused to his deflating treatment of her, he may then pick on her children to hurt her more deeply. “Well, Dr. Crane, your diagnosis sounded plausible and your description of such a bedroom triangle that second wives experience, certainly fitted my husband exactly. “So I thought I’d experiment and test your diagnosis. “Consequently, I began to concentrate on boudoir cheesecake, using seductive perfume and diaphanous nighties. “And I also followed your advice about being a bedroom actress, so I feigned more ardor than I usually felt. “Even after the first night, my husband changed remarkably. “In fact, within a week, he became his former sweet, considerate self and quit scolding my little girl. 1 ‘lnstead of shunning her new daddy, she now even began to run to the front door to greet him when he got home from the office. * “So PLEASE tell other wives who marry a second time, how easy it is to save their marriage, if they’ll just buoy up their new husband’s sex ego.”
