Pacers want

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - No negotiations are underway, but the Indiana Pacers have notified the Boston Celtics they want high-scoring Bob McAdoo, said Pacers’ coach Bobby Leonard. “We’ve let it be known that we’re interested if they decide to trade him,” Leonard said Wednesday. “Red Auerbach said he’d get back to us later this month if they decide to trade McAdoo.” Leonard has been given the

USC Trojans again have best horses in Pacific-10

-By The Associated Press West Coast football fans who follow the Pacific-10 hardly need to! buy new programs this fall. Nine of the conference’s teams are going to have most of the same starters as 1978. Only UCLA has fewer than 13 starters returning, and five of the squads have 15 first-stringers back for the 1979 campaign. Southern Cal is, as usual, considered the team to beat. The defending champion Trojans, 12-1 and second in The Associated Press final poll last season, are expected to once again make a strong run at the national title, although the Pac-lO’s balance could provide some upsets. Washington, 6-2 in conference play in 1978 after winning the league title the previous year, could be the Trojans’ roadblock. Stanford also may figure in the race for the Roses, while newcomers Arizona State and Arizona have seen the opposition now and could be the Pac-lO’s surprise teams of 1979. Cal should improve on its 3-4 conference finish of last year, but the upcoming season could be bleak for UCLA, Oregon, Oregon

Third-quarter play matches Greencastle and Cloverdale and North Putnam and South Putnam close the action in the fourth. Admission to the annual jamboree is $1.50 for adults and $1 for students. Pre-school children are admitted free, according to host North Putnam. PUTNAM COUNTY SCHOOLS will not see the first jamboree action in the area. Cascade plays in the Plainfield Football Jamboree Friday night. Joining Cascade and Plainfield are Avon, Danville, and Mooresville. Play begins on the 40-yard line at 7:30 p.m. Cascade begins its third season under coach Mike Parks in the third period against Avon. The Orioles are said to have one of the fastest and most punishing offensive backfields in central Indiana. The Cadets meet rival Danville in the fifth period.

Free agents Mickey Johnson, Frankie Sanders and John Kuester have joined the Pacers this summer, along with Jim Krivacs who was drafted by Kansas City in 1978 but never signed with them. “We have more depth than last year,” Leonard said. “But I’d really like to have McAdoo. There’s no question about it.

“However, we’d have to see what Boston wanted in return and make a deal so that we wouldn’t lose more than we’re gaining. Indiana finished its third'National Basketball Association season this year with a 38-44 mark its best record since joining the league. The Pacers finished strong, winning eight of their last 11 games. “Our goal for this season is making the playoffs for the first time since we merged with the

State and Washington State. UCLA’s Bruins face a rebuilding year, while the other three have a number of veterans back, but back from poor seasons. John Robinson’s Trojans again will feature the running of tailback Charles White, fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting last year, and the passing of quarterback Paul McDonald. White, back for his senior season, has rolled up 4,195 yards rushing during his Southern Cal career, including 1,859 last year. McDonald, a senior left-hander, connected on 57 percent of his 203 attempts in 1978, and threw 19 touchdown passes. Washington moved the ball well in 1978, and this season should be no different. Leading the way for the Huskies is tailback Joe Steele, who rushed for 1,111 yards last year, and Tom Porras, who threw for 1,151 yards. At Stanford, 5-foot-9 junior Darrin Nelson is expected to once again keep opposing defenses off-balance with his running and pass-catching, but the Cardinals have to find a new quarterback to get the ball to him.

NBA,” Leonard said. “But I think we have a lot of question marks about next season at this point.” The Pacers have been shifted to the Eastern Division for next season. Leonard thinks the shift will help his club, but said other teams in the division have also improved. “I made predictions last year (40 victories and the playoffs) and they didn’t come true,” Leonard said. “This year, I’m going to wait until we go out on

Steelers best ever, but

others have improved

PITTSBURGH (AP) - In Pittsburgh, the Steelers have three Super Bowl titles and potentially their best team ever. But you can’t even wrap fish in day-old potential. In Houston, the Oilers have Earl Campbell, the National Football League Rookie of the Year and rushing champion in 1978 but it remains to be seen whether the Oilers match their 1978 success. In Cleveland, the Browns have made some trades and Greg Pruitt has aired his gripes. But it’s a big jump from a .500 season to the playoffs. In Cincinnati, the Bengals have some prize rookies and hopes for major improvement from their 1978 disaster. But great expectations have gone awry there before. Those are the teams and those are the buts in the

the court and start playing.” McAdoo, who led the NBA in scoring three straight years while playing with the old Buffalo Braves, was traded to Boston last season by the New York Knicks for three firstround draft picks. “He’s a good guy, a class guy who loves to play baskeball,” Leonard said of the 6-foot-9 for-ward-center. “The big thing is he’ll pull a lot of people (to guard him). He flat can score. I look at his

Central Division of the American Conference, where Pittsburgh’s five straight titles belie the toughness of the competition. Last season, the Steelers had to win the division twice. They overcame Houston in regular season then had to beat the wild-card Oilers in the AFC title game. This summer, the Oilers got a two-week jump on Pittsburgh by opening camp July 3. But the Steelers’ season may have begun the day after their Super Bowl victory over Dallas. “I think this football team hasn’t reached its potential yet,” Coach Chuck Noll said before leaving Miami. “I hope I can say that after this season, too,” be said recently. Last season, Terry Bradshaw posted career highs in touch-

Arizona State, known for its ability to light up the scoreboard, figures to again be a high-scoring team. Quarterback Mark Malone, who ran for 705 yards and passed for 1,305 a year ago, figures to be even better in his senior season. Arizona will be led by quarterback Jim Krohn, who toppd the Pac-10 in passing last year until he sufferd a midseason arm injury. UCLA, 8-3-1 last year, lost runners Theotis Brown and James Owens, but has another potentially outstanding one in tailback Freeman McNeil. Oregon, 2-9 in 1978, will rely heavily on fullback Vince Williams, who gained 842 yards last season, and quarterback Tim Durando, who started the Ducks’ final five games. At Washington State, Coach Jim Walden has lost the hub of his offence quarterback Jack Thompson so he’s changing the offensive system. The Cougars will run more this campaign.

rebounds and he has averaged 12 a game,” Leonard said. McAdoo, who was unhappy with the Celtics last season, became expendable when Boston signed All-American forward Larry Bird of Indiana State and free-agent forward M.L. Carr. If his quest of McAdoo is successful, Leonard said he would use him at center. That would make 7-1 James Edwards, a two-year starter at center, available for trade or relief duty.

down passes and accolades. “I can’t help but get better. I’m still working hard v I don’t believe I’m as godd as people have been saying,” he says. In Houston last season, Campbell’s arrival complimented the passing of Dan Pastorini. “Used to be Dan was like a sword fighter with a pocket knife. Now he has his sword,” says Coach Bum Phillips. “I don’t have any numbers in the back of my head. But I’m expecting a lot from this guy Earl,” said Campbell, shifting to the third person. In Cleveland, Coach Sam Rutigliano has a precise estimate of what his team, 8-8 last year, will need to make the playoffs. “It will take 11 wins,” said Rutigliano, “While 11 wins may be difficult, I think I am being realistic.”

certainly didn’t hurt.” He’s also talking to officials in Indianpolis and Los Angeles about moving to those cities. And many believe he’s just using other cities to get stadium improvements and other favors in Baltimore.
