Worry Clinic
By George W. Crane, Ph.D.,M.D. Lana, like thousands of other frightened coeds, is whistling in the dark to allay her secret terror that even her free sex favors will not produce a wedding ring from her boyfriend! CASE S-643: Lana L., aged 19, is an irate college coed. “Dr. Crane,” she protested, “you seem to think that girls are stupid if they live with a boyfriend without being married. “But don’t you realize this is a new age and the old rules are obsolete? “Dr. Crane, you belong with the dinosaurs so why don’t you wake up to the fact this is 1979?”
CEMETERY WHISTLERS You readers are doubtless familiar with the fact that young boys often whistle as they pass a cemetery on a dark night. Why? To encourage themselves in the belief there really are no such things as ghosts! Well, thousands of scared coeds likewise whistle in the dark, as it were, by their attempts to re-write the age-old moral laws Despite the fact the Law of Gravity is millions of years old, it still applies just as definitely in this year 1979 as at the time of the dinosaurs. Likewise, the Multiplication Tables are still correct in 1979. And so are the Ten Commandments that Moses brought down on those hewn tables of stone from Mt. Sinai perhaps 2,000 years B. C. For those coeds who gamble everything as they “shack up” with boyfriends without a wedding ceremony to give them legal protection, are cowards. And they are idolatrous in their worship of sex, for they hope if they offer a casual boyfriend all the sex favors they have, then that will coax him into offering them a wedding ring! That shows they secretly fear they don’t have enough personality appeal to charm a boyfriend into a real wedding ceremony. So they throw discretion to the winds and wildly gamble that if they become the free concubine, laundress, cook, secretary and sex playmate of a man, then he may want to continue with them on a permanent, legal basis. But that is psychologically unwise, for the usual man figures:
“Why should I marry her when she gives me everything I need without my having to pay the usual market price, namely, a wedding ring?” In previous columns I have also explained the folly of placing merchandise on a storekeeper’s shelves “op consignment”, meaning, without demanding pay in advance. For then the merchant figures the new merchandise must prove its appeal, without any diligent effort on his part. So he stands back as merely an observer but not with the zeal to make the goods prove a success. But if he pays for them in advance, then he vigorously tries to make sure the new goods move off his shelves. This modern ‘‘trial marriage” system has proved fallacious ever since prostitution began on this earth. In fact, the prostitutes are more practical than college coeds who offer their sex favors “for free”, for at least the prostitutes demand cash in advance! Alas, girls like Lana confuse true love with mere sexual magnetism, not realizing the latter wanes whereas true love lasts through the Golden Wedding Day! So send for my “Rating Scales for Husbands & Wives”, enclosing a long, stamped, return envelope, plus 25C. Always write to Dr. Crane, Hopkins Bldg., Mellon, Indiana 47V58, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 25 c to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.)
