Jimmy and Chris struggle to win

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jimmy Connors, buoyed with renewed enthusiasm by the birth of his first child, feels he’s ready to climb out of a rut that has cost him the world's No. 1 tennis ranking. Connors, playing in his first tournament since the birth of his son Brett last week, opened defense of his U S. Clay Court championship Tuesday night with a 6-4,7-5 victory over Mark Edmondson of Australia. “I have a much clearer mind than in the last couple of months,” Connors said afterwards. “This is my first child, and if I wasn’t thinking about that I wouldn’t be much of a father.” ‘‘l’ve got to support three mouths now, so I’d better win,” he joked. Connors, who has won the Clay Court championship every even-numbered year since 1974, dropped to second in the world standings to Bjorn Borg, who passed up this tournament this year. Connors, seeded No. 1 here, said his son has provided “a new incentive for me. He gives me something to play for again.” “It got to where I thought I was too good. Maybe I was too good. I thought all I had to do was walk on the court and I would win. Now, I’ve gone back to the routine that got me where I was in the first place, the No. 1 player in the world.” “I’m not out here just to horse around. If I’m gonna be in it, I’m gonna be in it to be the

IHSAA Commissioner Ward Brown said Tuesday he observed the Panthers wearing shoulder pads, using blocking sleds and participating in supervised contact drills Monday and Tuesday. Under IHSAA rules, Aug. 6-8 are reserved for non-contact practices, including sprints and agility drills, and no uniforms, protective equipment or training devices are allowed, Brown said.

best.” Connors’ victory put him into a second-round match today against Pavel Slozil of Czechoslovakia, a 6-2, 6-0 winner against Argentina’s Fernando Dalla-Fontana Tuesday. Connors trailed Edmondson 4-3 in the first set and 5-4 in the second set before rallying to his victory. “I was pleased with the way I played,” Edmondson said. “The last time I played Jimmy I only won four games. He was too good then and he got past me tonight. I was serving well, but he returns so well.” Chris Evert Lloyd, winner of four straight Clay Court championships in 1972-75, continued her dominance Tuesday with victories over Paula Smith and Wendy White. Lloyd opened Tuesday’s play with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Smith, then moved into the third round with a 6-2,7-5 victory over White. She was paired today with unseeded Renata Tomanova, who advanced with a tough 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Barbara Jordan. Jordan’s sister, Kathy, was one of two seeded women beaten by unranked opponents in Tuesday’s second-round play. Kathy Jordan, seeded No. 6, was stopped by Mima Jausovec of Yugoslavia 7-6, 6-4, and No. 8 Stacy Margolin lost to Renee Richards 6-2,6-2. A Broken Pipe on center court? No, just part of the fun that Jimmy Connors brings to any tennis tournament. A fan in the North grandstands tried to cool Connors off between games four and five and despite

an effort to use the water as a quick shower, he couldn't get under it in time, the ball boys went right to work and the top seed just put on his court jester act. (Banner-Graphic photo by Steve Fields).
