Nashville truly Bible capital
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Bibles, Nashville’s got Bibles. We’ve got pulpit Bibles, reading Bibles, study Bibles, family Bibles, hand Bibles, pocket Bibles, purse Bibles and Bibles with pictures. We’ve got cloth-covered Bibles, hand-made Bibles, cut-flush Bibles, gilt-edged Bibles, paperback Bibles, custom Bibles, padded Bibles and Bibles with leather bindings—genuine, imitation, top-cut, and Moroccan. We’ve got Revised Standard Bibles, American Standard Bibles, Douay Bibles, International Bibles, Good News Bibles, Open Bibles, Living Bibles, King James Bibles and a New King James Bible New Testament. We’ve got Bibles in all shapes, sizes, colors, translations and trims. We’ve got more Bibles than any city under heaven. We’re the Bible capital of the earth and that sort of makes Sam Moore president. At least he’s president of Thomas Nelson Inc. A bornagain, practice-what-you-preach, reap-what-you-sow Baptist, Moore runs the world’s largest Bible publishing house. “We produce several million Bibles a year,” Moore, 48, said in an interview. “I’m sure more than 5 million a year. We did $25 million in net sales this year and it is about 80 percent Bibles.” He bought Nelson from Brit-ish-owned Thomas Nelson and Sons in 1969 for $2.6 million. But he’d been in the business a long time already. Born in Lebanon, Moore immigrated in 1950, became a student at South Carolina’s Columbia Bible College and sold

The gospel is the power of God unto salvation. (Rom. 1:16) It is the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17), the instrument God uses to convict men of their sins. The Bible nowhere speaks of the Holy Spirit directly operating on the heart of a man to enable him to obey the gospel. The Scriptures are God's tool to convert men from their sinful ways. Man is a free moral agent. Every man has the free choice to choose whether to serve God and obey the Bible. If the Holy Spirit directly operates on the heart of man then man does not have a free choice. It means that the Holy Spirit is responsible for conversion and has not been the free choice of the individual. God is no respector of persons (Acts 10:34-35). He does not wish that any should perish but that all should come to a knowledge of the truth. (II Pet. 3:9) The Scriptures are God's sole method of communicating his will to mankind. Thus it is our responsibility to study the Scriptures and then to obey them. If you would like to study the Bible in your home the church offers a Bible correspondence course (seven lessons) which is free of charge. If you wish to enroll call 653-4021. books—among them Bibles—-door-to-door. Eventually he took an economics degree from the University of South Carolina and a Chase Manhattan Bank job in New York. It wasn’t his line of work. In 1957 Moore founded National Book Co., a Nashville sales operation. That spawned Royal Publishing Co., a religious house, and attracted Thomas Nelson’s attention. It was looking for a new U.S. manager. Moore declined employment but offered to buy. Now, with 400 employees in a 96,000-square-foot plant and a New Jersey bindery, Nelson is the undisputed master of the field.

"We know the figures of the competition,” he said. “We know their figures and they know our figures. We have to register them with the SEC. “We publish them all,” he said. “We farm our printing out. We are in the commercial side of it—editorial, marketing, advertising, warehousing, shipping and customer service. We sell to over 30,000 bookstores and department stores and also to discount stores.” “One of the most rewarding parts of our work is that you are publishing the Bible, the word of God, and you see people reading it and it changes their lives. Science, faith sense 'a vision of wider truth'
By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - Scientists and theologians from around the world say that they sense “the prospect of a new and more comprehensive vision of reality” both in science and Christianity. In different ways, “it is a vision of a wider truth and coherence which lies within our reach” say representatives of the two fields. But this prospect, they add, depends on both sides freeing themselves from "sterile conflicts and protective armor” that have crippled past relationships. A report issued at the close last week of a 12-day World

Conference on Faith, Science and the Future traced a history between the two fields of initial harmony, then battle, mutual misassumptions and finally a 20th century “uneasy truce.” The report on relationships of science and faith was drawn up by a section headed by Lutheran theologian Philip Hefner of Chicago and physicist D. Enilo Ajakaiye of Nigeria. It was one of 10 sectional reports on various issues, including technology, political power, energy shortages, urban life, population problems, genetic manipulation, hunger, economics, social ethics, nature and God.
