Dear Abby
Citizen is alienated by foreigners on our shores
DEAR ABBY: I believe in helping foreigners by sending them aid in disasters such as earthquakes, floods and famine, but when I see them overrunning our country by the hundreds of thousands, crowding us and taking jobs that should go to Americans, 1 object! We feed, clothe and educate them when many of our own go without. Those bleeding-heart liberals are going to ruin this country if they don’t get tough and shut down immigration until we can take care of our own. Charity begins at home! I welcome your response. AMERICA FIRST! DEAR AMERICA FIRST: Unless you are a direct descendant of the American Indian, you would not be here if your forebears hadn’t sought refuge from another country. It would take more spare than 1 am allowed in this column to explain why we must accept these homeless victims of war and oppression. An American poet and essayist, Emma Lazarus IIB4S-1887), said it eloquently in her poem, “The New Colossus.” It appears on the Statue of Liberty and reads, in part: “Give me your tired poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore, Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!’ DEAR ABBY: 1 work in an office with both men and women. When a co worker says, “I heard a cute joke last night, but it’s a little dirty. Do you want to hear it?” I say, “Sure,” because I don’t want to he known as a goody two shoes. Well, the joke is always dirtier than 1 thought it would be, and I’m embarrassed. The women as well as the men in this office tell some pretty raunchy jokes, but I can’t suddenly tell them I hate that kind of language. So how do 1 get my point across without sounding holier than thou? OFFENDED IN CASA GRANDE, ARIZ. DEAR OFFENDED: When you’re asked if you want to hear a cute joke, be honest and say, “Not if it’s X-rated."

DEAR ABBY: I’m going with a terrific guy. He has a driver’s license but doesn’t own a car. I have to pick him up at his place whenever we go anywhere. It didn't bother me at first, but it does since he told me the reason he doesn’t have a car isn’t because he can’t afford one; he just doesn’t want the headache of owning one. lie lives within walking distance of his job, so he walks to work and back, but when he wants to go somewhere, guess who takes him. The problem is that I’m kind of old fashioned. I think a guy should pick up the girl-most of the time anyway. Should I lorget my values and keep providing transporta tion? Or should I tell him how I feel? Sign me ... RELUCTANT DRIVER DEAR RELUCTANT: Tell him how you feel before your resentment goes into overdrive. DEAR ABBY: I have just started going steady with a guy I’ve been dating for a year. What 1 want to know is, just how far is a girl expected to go when she is going steady? I mean, how much do guys in general expect from this kind of relationship? CONFIDENTIAL, PLEASE DEAR CON: What “guys in general” expect is not relevant. What itout guy expects is. Ask him. DEAR ABBY: Frannie asked if birth control pills were deductible, and you replied, “Only if they don’t work.” Cute answer, but for your information, according to Inter nal Revenue ruling 7.3 200, birth control pills are deductible whether they work or not —if prescribed by a physician. NEIL WITH THE IKS DEAR NEIL: Thanks for the info. Who am I to argue with the IRS? They’re the nice people who know you can’t take it with you —so they remove the temptation.
Hints from Heloise Sprinkler serves double purpose: cleans, waters plants
DEAR HEIjOISE: I’m sure you all know just how dirty and dusty house plants get. Well, with the help of my husband, I have found a fairly simple way to clean them. This is where he comes in: about once a month I ask him to move the plants outside. The weekend is generally an ideal time. If you have a sprinkler hose tone with all the tiny holes) make it into a circle and place your plants in the middle. Of course the size of the circle depends on the number of plants you have to water and clean. Turn the water on just enough for the water stream to go over the top of the plants. If you don’t have this type hose, just turn your sprinkler on a fine spray and set your plants under it. Either works very well. Be sure you do this early in the morning and take them in before the sun gets too hot. Otherwise, your plants will get sunburned. Remember, they are accustomed to being in the
