DPU's cost reduction plan cited DePauw University has earned honorable mention recognition in a national cost reduction incentive program co-sponsored by the U.S. Steel Foundation and the National Association of College and University Business Officers. DePAUW’S successful entry described a system of energy management for six live steam heated buildings, the design permits night shut-down of heat in these buildings, establishes constant stability control of heat, and improves the lifespan of the buildings’ heating systems. Annual savings with the system were estimated at $57,000. The national program was developed to recognize successful cost reduction ventures within colleges and universities. It also provides a means of disseminating that information to other higher education institutions and to industry. THIS IS THE university’s second award in the four-year old program. In 1977 a formal building use hours plan was named a winner in the national cost reduction competition. The 1979 award was accepted for DePauw by Vice President for Finance Lawrence Elam during the NACUBO annual meeting in Atlanta.
