Thousands crowd the courthouse square for an early Putnam County fair
Putnam County Courthouse. Later the fair was moved to Robe Ann Park, an area that was not too well developed at the time. All activities of the fair were held in tents or beneath the trees. Something over 20 years ago, a county-wide move was made to locate the county fair in a permanent site where improved facilities could be erected. An acreage, which had once been a part of the Daggy farm on U.S. 231 was purchased. Persons and organizations from all townships worked
together in a giant fund-raising drive. Clubs and individuals gave money. Contributions in the farming sections were often made in kind. Lee Toney, who now lives on Cement Plant Road, recalls using his truck to go from farm to farm until he had collected a full load of corn. With the land purchased, various improvements were begun on the new fairgrounds. Through tax levies buildings were erected and provisions made for continuance of the annual fair. , L , Before the fair came to the county seat, it was held at

various locations. While most of these are unknown, it is recorded that the fair was once held in an area now occupied by the Allenhill Golf course. This golf course, located about two miles from Greencastle along U.S. 231, is a tract on which a large sugar maple camp once operated. The Allen family, founded by W.W. Allen, had his camp in the northwest section of this area and a tile factory and kiln stood in the northeast section. The Putnam County Fair got a big shot in the arm when 4-H club work started in 1930 under

the direction of County Extension Agent Earnest W. Baker. Gerald Clodfelter was one of the first to participate in the bovs’ program. Sufficient interest in 4-H was shown in 1935 to permit organization of club work with an adult local leader in charge. For boys, the first project was livestock. In the summer of 1933, Violet McGaughey started a group of 18 girls in baking and clothing projects which were entered in county fair competition.
