Dear Abby
This broken engagement is & compound fracture
DEAR ABBY: This problem concerns my son. Two years ago he was engaged to marry a girl he had been crazy about for years. They were both 21. Then she ran off and married an older man (30) she’d known only a few weeks. My son was brokenhearted. He couldn’t eat or sleep, lost 20 pounds and walked around in a daze for months. ” Then he met a lovely girl who raised his spirits and made him feel that life was worth living again. They planned to announce their engagement this month and marry in September. Out of the blue, his old girlfriend called to say she and her husband were separated. She said she made a terrible mistake, she still loves my son and wants to pick up where they left off. My son saw her, and is now considering dropping the girl who brought him out of the dumps and going back with the girl who broke his heart. What should I do? HIS MOTHER DEAR MOTHER: He should do what he wants to do. And you should offer no advice unless he asks for it. And neither will I. . DEAR ABBY: A friend of mine being treated for a skin condition told me that her doctor gave her a “word association test” in which he used some very filthy words which made her most uncomfortable. She is an elderly widow who has raised several children. She is not a prude, but she said she is not accustomed to hearing language like that. Another friend (also elderly) told me that she went to this same doctor for her nerves, and he

used some very vulgar language with her, too. She said she was so disgusted she never went back. Abby, is this something new in the practice of medicine? What can be done about it? A FRIEND IN OSWEGO, N.Y. DEAR FRIEND: This kind of “treatment” strikes me as most unconventional. If a patient feels that a doctor has behaved in an unprofessional or unethical manner, that doctor should be reported to the ethics committee of his county or state medical society. DEAR ABBY: Some of us older folks don’t move as fast as we used to, so you’d be doing us big favor if you would pass this suggestion on to those responsible for the sound effects on TV programs. When a telephone rings, I wish they’d use a more unique sound, such as a buzzer, or a beeping sound that is common in European phones. Anything but the familiar telephone bell most of us have at home. Frequently while watching TV, I’ve struggled out of my easy chair to answer my. phone to discover that it wasn’t ringing at all. It was a ringing phone on the television! Hints from Heloise Sparking children's interest in vegetables
DEAR HELOISE: The secret I’ve found to get children to eat, or at least try their vegetables, is this: To begin with, let them grow their own vegetables if space allows. If not, let them at least do the cleaning. Even a three-year-old can stand up to the sink and wash celery or carrots. « Another way to spark interest is to let them help prepare the meal. My child ioves to help when I cook. There are so many easy jobs to be done while you’re preparing the main part. For instance, when we have pizza burgers, he arranges the buns on the cookie sheet while I cook the meat. He also sprinkles on the cheese and helps make the salad. I feel the more you let your children take an active part in the meal preparation, the more interest they will have in eating it. A Reader in Kansas i it * it How true! >*What child doesn’t take great pride in declaring, “I made this all by myself!” Sure, it takes time to teach ’em, but how else are they going to learn? I think you’re super to begin developing this interest at such an early age. Heloise

DEAR HELOISE: * I use large bath towels or beach towels as a crib pad, placing it between the sheet and the plastic mattress covering. These make the baby more comfortable, and are easily washed and dried. Mama Fran ★ ★ ★ DEAR HELOISE: It’s getting close to the time for family reunions. As is usually the case, you meet relatives you haven’t met before or whom you haven’t seen in years. It’s often hard to match husbands and wives and their kids, but my niece came up with a solution. She loves to sew so she made matching shirts and blouses for her husband, three children and herself.

I also store and serve the dressing in old Worcestershire or soy sauce bottles. When one shakes it out of this type of bottle, it is automatically mixed at the time of serving. Reginald McNichol

DEAR HELOISE: While pressing a white shirt I noticed the balls of lint that were caught inside the front behind the buttons and buttonholes. So I took a cotton swab and dampened one end. By poking it down behind the button or buttonhole and pushing it, the lint came right out most of it stuck to the swab. Mrs. B.K.
