Why Maury Wills was cut by NBC remains mystery

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sitting in the broadcast booth at Dodger Stadium one recent Thursday evening was Maury Wills, he of the swift feet and incisive baseball view. A TV color man, taken down a notch, and not quite certain why. Wills had spent seven seasons as commentator on NBC’s baseball Game of the Week, usually working the back-up game, usually quite well. As a former jock bigs, Hall of Fame credentials he knew “inside” baseball, and best, had a TV style that conveyed that knowledge without showing off. Wills clearly enjoyed his work at NBC; he loved baseball, and the NBC job was a high-paying way to be near the game. This night, though, Wills is not surrounded by big red, white and blue NBC bunting. No huge production team, no giant fleet of network cameras. He’s a color man, but he’s working the game for UA-Co-lumbia Satellite Services, Inc., though at first he’s not quite sure. He looks at some papers he’s carrying. “Yeah,” he says, reading the name. “That’s it.” UA-Columbia is a distributing outfit that delivers Thursday Night Game of the Week to cable systems across the country, except those in markets with a major league ball club. The game of the week is one of the firm’s most popular products, says spokeswoman Marylou Brown, and is already piped in to about 2 million viewers Somehow, though, it’s not quite the same. Oh, Wills is glad for the job, glad to be near baseball. But he wonders why he was ushered out of NBC, without explanation, when things were apparently going so well. He wonders why he was suddenly replaced by Wes Parker, a former teammate of Wills’ with the Dodgers. “And I turned down an offer to manage in the major leagues (for the San Francisco Giants,

Worry Clinic

Prof. Hal asked me to give his class a quickie talk on medicine, such as ordinary aspirin. So remember the data below and especially the sound advice of famous Dr. Walter Alvarez! CASE R-692: Hal 8., aged 26, teaches high school chemistry. “Dr. Crane,” he asked when I addressed his school assembly, “could you stay long enough to talk to my chemistry class?” “And then, if your schedule permits, we'd like to have you take lunch with some of us teachers at noon. “For example, would you care to tell my class some of the simple facts about such commonly used drugs as aspirin?” WONDER DRUGS Aspirin was used about 400 B. C. by the Greeks to reduce pain. They would make tea out of willow bark, and thus obtained their aspirin remedy. An herb woman in England confounded our medical profession by reducing her patients’ swollen legs that attained the size of telephone poles and that kept victims bedfast. Our medics thought maybe this “dropsy” or excessive fluid in the legs was due to “bad kidneys”. But she could reduce that swelling fast, just by having the patients drink an herb tea she brewed from 15 or 20 plants in her garden. A smart young medic watched the various types of leaves she would collect and scientifically decided the remedy was due to just one of her ingredients. When he tried each of them singly and made tea out of foxglove leaves, presto! That was the remedy. For foxglove is the source of digitalis, now the standard drug for fast hearts that don’t

two years ago),” he says. “I was told that networks didn’t make changes just for the sake of making changes. I’d kept my nose clean, I had good reports, never missed a game...” NBC says that Wills had been told why his one-year contract wasn’t renewed: “They weren’t happy with his work,” a network spokesman said. “They were hoping he’d improve, and they were going to let him go last year, but they gave him a year to improve. He didn’t improve in certain areas, and they let him go.”

maintain proper circulation and thus allow fluid to seep out of the vessels in the legs! Aspirin is considered the most widely used medicine in America. Using morphine as 100 0, 0 in relieving pain, one writer listed alcohol as 50°o as effective and aspirin as about 40 0, 0 as good a pain-stopper as morphine. But aspirin is an acid, though most readers think acids must be liquids. And it can eat holes in flesh, including the lining of the stomach. So famous Walter Alvarez, former internist at the Mayo Clinic and a prolific writer for our medical journals, advised this technique when taking aspirin: (1) Break the tablet into small pieces so an entire 5grain tablet will not lodge on an eroded ulcer hole, already eaten in the stomach’s wall. For Dr. Alvarez studied a series of perforated peptic ulcer patients, in which an underlying artery wall was eaten away till blood spurted into the stomach. And in every case of a series of such cases, the patients had taken one or two aspirin tablets with very little liquid to dissolve them. So he urges aspirin users to break the tablet into several smaller fragments or even pulverize it. Then drink milk or take an antacid tablet to neutralize the aspirin’s acid. (2) Aspirin is now regarded as helpful in reducing clot formation in coronary arteries and is also urged as a quick treatment for impending stroke cases and also right after their stroke! (Always write to Or. Crane, Hopkins Bldg., Mellott, Indiana 47958, enclosing a long stamped, addressed envelope and 25 C to cover typing and printing costs when you send for one of his booklets.)
