DePauw University has gone to the Ivy League for a head football coach. Jerry Berndt. 41-year-old offensive coordinator for Ivy League power Dartmouth College has been named to direct DePauw’s varsity football program. The announcement was made late Wednesday afternoon. THE OHIO NATIVE succeeds Bob Bergman who resigned earlier this spring to enter private business in Florida. DePauw Pres. Richard F. Rosser announced the appointment of Berndt and said he would take over July 1. Berndt will coach track and teach in the department of health, physical education and recreation. He will have the faculty rank of assistant professor. Berndt went to Dartmouth from Steetsboro (Ohio) High

It appears Boston will finally have Bird in hand and not bush

BOSTON (AP) two months, several news conferences and assorted temper tantrums by both sides, but the Boston Celtics’ pursuit of Larry Bird is nearing the finish. Sometime late this week or early next, the college basketball star is expected to fly from Indiana to Boston to sign a multi-year National Basketball Association contract that will make him an instant millionaire before he wears a pro uniform. Sources close to both Celtics President Red Auerbach and Bird’s lawyer, Bob Woolf, agree the annual salary will be something around $650,000, perhaps a little less. That would make the pact worth more than $3 million over five years. A variety of issues were un-

The other side, however, claims this already had been decided and a wide range of “minor” details remain Accountants for both Woolf and Celtics owner Harry Mangurian are poring over the proposed contract. The Celtics thought they had a deal late last week, but Woolf felt rushed and backed off, seeking more time to review what was then a sudden shift by the NBA team. v For weeks, Celtics President Red Auerbach hadn’t budged from an initial $500,000-per-year offer. He later became defensive line coach and offensive line coach before being named offensive moderator/coordinator in 1977. DURING HIS EIGHT years at Dartmouth the Big Green compiled seven winning seasons, four Ivy League championships, and a 47-23-2 record. Berndt also coached wrestling at Dartmouth. He played football at Toledo’s Waite High School where he was all-city. He was all-league at Wisconsin State CollegeSuperior before transferring to Bowling Green State University in 1962 where he earned the B.S. He earned the M.S. at the University of Toledo in 1969. by some SIOO,OOO. Woolf had been seeking $700,000 a far cry from his original demand on April 10 of more than $1 million. Bird, home in French Lick, Ind., has been shielded from the pressure and has left negotiations entirely up to Woolf. Bird’s only apparent requirement was that as college play-er-of-the-year he get more than the $600,000 reportedly to be paid to Earvin Johnson of Michigan State, who will be the Los Angeles Lakers’ top draft pick on June 25. Woolf said he doesn’t care that the Celtics claim much of Johnson’s pay is in real estate, not cash. Bird is viewed as the cornerstone of the new Celtics rebuilding program managed by Auerbach and Coach Bill Fitch

Toledo. He later coached at Bedford High School in Temperance, Mich., and served under Toledo’s successful coach, Frank Lauterbur, as a graduate assistant before going to Streetsboro. DePauw athletic director Tom Mont said the selection committee which chose Berndt was in unanimous agreement on the appointment. “As a result of being at Dartmouth and in the Ivy League, he understands the type of student-athlete that must be recruited here and he is committed to the philosophy of Division 111 football,” Mont said. AT DARTMOUTH Berndt has been responsible for a 20-state recruiting area along with his coaching and teaching duties. Krueger would trade individual title for Elkhart's team crown

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Valparaiso’s Gary Krueger is the state high school golf champion, but the 17-year-old senior would rather have had the team title. “I was hoping our team would do better than we did,” he said after Wednesday’s 1-under par 71 gave him a fourstroke victory over Elkhart Central’s Dave Thomas and Marion’s Jim Gallagher. “Really, I would have preferred to have the team win it. I thought we had a team capable of winning it.” After Krueger, Valparaiso did not have another individual among the top 18 finishers. Elkhart Central, meanwhile, came on strong to edge first-round leader Warren Central by one stroke for the team title, 617618. Marion was third in the standings at 633, while Valparaio tied Evansville Mater Dei for fourth at 640. “I was able to concentrate pretty well and was hitting the ball well,” said Krueger, who did not even qualify for the state tourney last year. “I thought I putted pretty poor, really, but I was hitting all the greens.” \ “I was a foot off the green on No. 5 and in the trap on No. 8, but I didn’t miss a green the rest of the way.” Krueger finished Tuesday’s 18-hole round one stroke behind Warren Central’s Jeff Cook. But Krueger took the lead with an eagle on the 11th hole Wednesday, hitting the pin from 175 yards out with a 5-iron. The ball

hit just short of the green, bounced up and rolled to the pin. Cook, meanwhile, went twoover par with a 38 on the front nine. On the back nine, he lost his chance for the individual title and Warren Central lost the team championship with a rash of bogeys. Warren Central, which had a five-stroke lead over Elkhart Central after Tuesday’s round and a three-stroke advantage going into the final nine on Wednesday, was hurt badly on the par-4 No. 13 and par-3 No. 17 holes. Both Cook and teammate Jim Reneau, who started the day in third place, hit into a sand trap on 17. responsible for recruiting some of the best players in the history of Dartmouth football. Berndt said he is “not looking for a rebuilding year” at DePauw despite the team’s 3-17 mark the last two seasons “I don’t like that term ‘rebuilding.’ I believe our number one objective this fall is to get ready for the first game (Rose-Hulman Sept. 15), win it, and then go from there.” Berndt said he’d spend much of the summer getting in contact with returning lettermen and incoming freshmen, do some recruiting, and try to establish a multiple offense and defense that’ll be put in when fall practice begins in August. Berndt’s wife Patricia attended the University of Toledo. The couple has three children - daughters Jodie, 17, and Jamie, 14, and a son Jeffrey, 11.
