Pursell handcuffs Moose; Elks win

The Elks, defending regular season champions of the Greencastle Babe Ruth League, picked up right where they left off last summer by spanking the Moose 8-1 in the season opener Monday on the Greencastle High School baseball diamond. Lanky righthander Tracy Pursell struck out 14, allowing only three Moose hits in posting the victory. PURSELL ALSO helped himself at the plate, driving in two runs with a triple and a single and scoring three times. John Stevens’ Elks crew also played errorless baseball and recorded the defensive play of the game on the final out as rightfielder Tommy Steele made a running catch of a long John Wells flyball to clinch the win. Elks jumped on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning as Todd Inman singled to right and continued to second on an outfield error. Pursell walked and stole second, setting the stage

Martin expects no trouble

NEW YORK (AP) - Billy Martin says he will definitley return as manager of the New York Yankees for the 1980 season. Martin, appearing on the ABC-TV talk show Good Morning America, said that his visit with Yankee owner George Steinbrenner was “very good” and that he was “very satisfied” following the short meeting in the Yankee Stadium offices Monday. “I am positive I will be

No CART owners entered USAC standing ground on Pocono

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Two-time U.S. Auto Club national driving champ Tom Sneva, now with the rival Championship Auto Racing Teams, would love to compete in the USAC-sanctioned Pocono 500 this month. But the state of war within the sport makes that very unlikely. Sneva, who received an invitation to enter the Pocono race from promoter Joseph Mattioli, telephoned his reply: “What I told him was I would like to be there if my car owner shows up,” said Sneva. “I said I couldn’t myself because I don’t have a car.” ' Tom Bagley, another CART driver, responded likewise: ’ “I told him I was contracted \tfith Longhorn Racing, and that if Longhorn Racing is there, I’ll be there. But I told him I couldn’t come in another car because it would be a breach of rpy contract.”

Women reporters $ I in locker room is no problem MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Commissioner Bowie Kuhn sees a leveling off of problems involving female reporters in ‘baseball clubhouses. ■2 “There no longer are any serious problems,” said Kuhn ' Monday night after addressing The Associated Press Sports convention. “The players and the other writers are -beginning to adjust.” Kuhn told a dinner gathering of some 240 editors and representatives from 170 newspapers that 22 of baseball’s 26 teams now allow female reporters into the dressisg room. • “We have made a tremendous amount of progress,” said Kuhn. “At first we thought it was unfair to the players to have the women come in. We litigated it and lost. It hasn’t come easy. There have been rough spots.” Kuhn also said that baseball has the best media relations in the world of sports. “We take pride in our media relations,” he said. “The press is important to us. We want the press to do a good job. I don’t mean to say there are no problems, but look at the access we provide in pregame and postgame periods. “Night games are a problem for morning newspapers and there is a conflict between the broadcast and print media,” said Kuhn. “But we are trying to provide the best possible working conditions

for Steve Wainman’s two-run single to left. THE SCORE went to 5-0 in the third when Elks parlayed Pursell’s long triple to left center and three Moose errors into three runs. RBI fielder’s choices by Wainman and Randy Rolls produced two more runs in the fifth, and Pursell plated the final run for Elks in the sixth when he singled home Bill Shuee. Moose scored its only run of the night in the fifth when Darrin Cox led off with a single to right, moved to second on a walk and came home on Wells’ base hit. THE ONLY other Moose hit came in the fourth when Brent Elkins reached on an infield single. However, Moose left eight men on base, including two in the third and fifth innings and the bases loaded in the fourth. While four Moose errors helped betray pitcher Tony

I will sign a twoyear manager’s contract and I will have complete control over my team. “There will be no conditions with the contract as there were some before.”

Pursell, making his first start in regular season play, fanned the first four Moose batters he faced. The 14-year-old hurler, who helped pitch the Greencastle 13-year-old All-Stars to a tournament title last summer, was in control most of the way, despite walking seven batters. RON JOHNSON’S Legion team and Dick Borer’s Kiwanis outfit were scheduled to open their seasons with a 5:30 p.m. date Tuesday on the GHS diamond. Martin sees no future problems with outfielder Reggie Jackson either. “Reggie’s a fair guy. There should be no problems whatsoever.” Martin had originally had been reported to be at Yankee Stadium just to pick up his scouting itinerary and decided at the last minute to stop in and say hello to Steinbrenner. Their meeting was described by Yankee president A 1 Rosen as “a friendly chat.”

tablished sanctioning body late last year, or unless there is an agreement between CART and the major track owners which would preclude USAC’s participation altogether. But that latter possibility has been ruled out by Mattioli, who reiterated that the June 24 Pocono race will be run under USAC rules. Still, CART president Pat Patrick said he is trying to negotiate with the track owners. “We’re open to suggestions,” said Patrick. “We’ve got to get together. I talked to Dr. Mattioli and said we couldn’t run under the conditions we did in May (at Indianapolis).” “I am not opposed to forming a new sanctioning body under SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) composed of car owners and race track owners,” Patrick continued. “If Dr. Mattioli and Ray Smartis (pro-

Lincoln Park Speedway expects 'World of Outlaws' on June 27

For the first time ever the “World of Outlaws” sprint cars will compete on the quartermile Lincoln Park Speedway oval June 27. It was thought the first 11 second lap ever would be turned on the Lincoln Park track, but a last minute change cut down those possibilities. Originally the race was planned that cars would be using

Bradfield retires from basketball

VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) - Twenty-seven years as head basketball coach is enough, says Vincennes University’s Allen Bradfield, who has announced his retirement. Bradfield, considered the dean of junior college coaches, coached Vincennes to a remarkable 608-177 record since 1952 and to three national championships. He also helped develop such players as Bob McAdoo, Rickey Green and Foots Walker. “In 1952, I pledged to myself that the basketball world would

THE 50 TO 70 expected cars that will enter the C&H Promotions race will be competing for a $9,000 purse with $2,000 going to the winner. There is every reason to expect that it will so remain I would continue if conditions were otherwise.” Bradfield will continue as

cono. “We’re an open race. We invited all USAC, CART and FIA (Federation d’lnternationale Automobile, the international sanctioning body) participants.” USAC, meanwhile, announced on Monday that a 25lap dirt car race has been added to Sunday’s Milwaukee 150-mile champ car event. Participants are expected to include Gary Bettenhausen, Bill Vukovich, Larry Dickson, Johnny Parsons, Dana Carter, George Snider, Rich Vogler, Bubby Jones, Billy Cassella and Arnie Knepper. The drivers will split a purse of $5,000. CART will run a competing show of two 100-mile championship car races the same day at Trenton, N.J. The two warring factions are expected to return to federal court here later this month for CART’S anti-trust suit against

All of the cars and stars from the “World of Outlaws” are expected to enter, including Ron Shuman, Sammy Swindell, Doug Wolfgang, Rick Ferkel and the defending national “King of the Outlaws” Steve Kinser of Bloomington. Tickets for the race are $7 for adults, $3 for children six

head of the Vincennes mathematics department and possibly as athletic director. The Trailblazers’ glory years through the 1960 s and early ’7os saw an outstanding record of 330-71. Since moving into the new physical education complex in 1974, Vincennes has carved a 128-34 mark. Bradfield, who had no prior coaching experience when he took over in 1952, led the Trailblazers to the national junior college titles in 1965, 1970 and 1972. The 1972 team, led by Walker, posted a 33-0 record.

USAC and the Speedway. The suit stemmed from USAC’s attempt to bar six CART teams, including winner Rick Mears, from the Indy 500. Judge James Noland last month granted a preliminary injunction which allowed the CART teams to race, but he made no ruling on the merits of the suit. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) During the 1971 J-79 basketball season, the Atlantic Coast Conference did not use a jump ball. Instead, it alternated possession out of bounds. “I think it was making the best of a bad situation,” commented Virginia Coach Terry Holland. “It was just too tough for a 5-10 official to throw the ball up properly between two seven-foot centers. I would much rather see the ball dropped from the scoreboard, giving every player on the floor an equal shot at it. To say the least, it would make things more interesting.”

through 12 years of age and those under five are admitted free. THIS WILL BE the first race in the Mid-West of the return schedule. At the present the “World of Outlaws” is racing throughout California. This is also a qualification race for the SIO,OOO “World of Outlaws” race at Eldora Speedway in Eldora, Ohio.

Walker later helped West Georgia to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics championship and has played the past five years with the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association. McAdoo helped Vincennes to the 1970 title before going on to the University of North Carolina and then to NBA stardom with the Buffalo Braves, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics. There was no immediate indication of a possible successor to Bradfield.

South Putnam Board to name new coach The South Putnam School Board will meet in special session at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 7, to formally vote on a successor to Harold King as varsity basketball coach. King was relieved of his coaching duties by the board earlier this year. The board is scheduled to interview three candidates for the position Tuesday night and three more Wednesday night prior to final selection. Thursday night’s session will be held at the corporation’s administration office on U.S. 231 south of Greencastle. Greencastle trying to set tournament An attempt is being made to form a Putnam County Little League tournament for late summer and help is needed. The Greencastle Little League would like to sponsor a county tournament for both the nine and 10 year olds and 11 and 12 year olds. But information is needed. Ed Helmer is tournament chairman and needs to know when surrounding little leagues seasons end and if there is interest in a county tournament. Helmer would like league officials of all the surrounding little leagues to call him at 6533704. If enough county teams can not be “recruited” to make a tournament field, then it will be opened to other leagues. Fillmore girls now 1-1 The Fillmore girls softball team split its first two games of the season. Fillmore defeated Cascade 15-14 in the season opener and lost to Monrovia 10-2 in the second outing. Although Fillmore outscored the opposition in the opening game, the home and victorious team was out hit 26-22 by Cascade. L. Staley and D. Gould led Fillmore with four hits, including a home run each. G. Liechty had a double and finished the game with two hits and L. Landes had a double and three hits for the game. P. Tilford and L. Trout each had two hits also for the winners. J. Burris was the winning pitcher and T. Freeman caught. Fillmore led briefly at 2-0 against Monrovia, but the host scored three in the second and never trailed again. Monrovia ■ outhit Fillmore 20-13 for the game. L. Staley and P. Tilford each had three hits and K. Simmons two. The next game for the now 1-1 Fillmore squad is Wednesday at 6 p.m. Cougar clinic still go There has been a coaching change, but the North Putnam basketball clinic is still going to be held this summer and ac- , cording to the format already established. The objective of this clinic is to teach elementary and junior high boys and girls the fundamentals, drills and team play important to the development of basketball skills. The clinic is set for June 18 through 29 for girls and boys in the seventh and eighth grades at the high school. Boys will be instructed from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and girls from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day for two weeks. Those interested in getting into the camp should remember they did not have to play basketball during the recently ended school year. The camp is open to anyone in these grades. Cost of the camp is sl2. Players should bring their own gym equipment. Allenhill sets clinic Have you ever wanted to learn how to play golf and didn’t know who to ask? Allenhill Golf Course is offering Putnam County youth an opportunity to learn. Allenhill will hold a Junior Golf Clinic June 7 for boys and girls 10 through 16 years old. Boys and girls 10 through 12 years of age are to be instructed from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 13 through 16 year old golfers should come out from 11a.m. until noon. For further details contact Allenhill Golf Course. Braves keep on rolling In recent Greencastle Little League play the Braves have raised their record to 7-0. The unbeaten Braves rapped out 12 hits and scored nine runs, beating the 0-7 Dodgers 9-2 Monday night. Just last week the Braves shutout the Dodgers 3-0 and last Thursday the Braves were 5-3 winners over the Cardinals. Against the Dodgers Monday night, G. Wilson had a double and single for the winners as did J. Hopkins. T. Wilson and R. Alex each had two singles and J. Quigley doubled. D. Baker had the only extra base hit for the Dodgers, that being a double. The Yankees have been rained out twice this season and opponents might like that to happen the rest of the season. The Yankees defeated the White Sox 10-1 to even their record at 2-2. Terry Judy had a double and triple for the Yankees along with a single, finishing the contest with three hits. Donnie O’Conner had three singles. Tim Mazur threw a one hitter while being backed by errorless defense. Mazur walked two and struck out 13 bat- • ters.
