Police search for man linked with 12 murders

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) Authorities are searching for a Fort Wayne man wanted for questioning in three Indiana murders and possibly as many as 12 homicides altogether between here and Florida, the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette reported Wednesday. In a copyright story quoting Allen County Sheriff Robert Meeks and several unidentified sources, the paper identified the man as Robert Leslie, 36. An unidentified state police source, however, said investigators have no evidence to support the claim. Meeks said Leslie called his sister in the Fort Wayne area last weekend and instructed her to open a sealed letter she was holding for him. The letter implicated Leslie in the slaying of 16-year-old Trena Biddle, whose half-clothed body was found along a rural road in early 1978, Meeks said.

Adjustment costs questioned

The state police source confirmed Meeks’ statement, but said it has not been established the letter was in Leslie’s handwriting. Allen County authorities and state police previously wanted to question Leslie in the January 1978 shooting deaths of Bruce and Margaret Moser in their Montpelier home. The Journal-Gazette said Leslie also is wanted for questioning in a string of at least nine other homicides, mostly involving hitchhikers, in Georgia and Florida. A kidnapping arrest warrant was issued for Leslie in Orange County, Fla., last week in connection with the May 9 abduction of two Chicago women believed picked up in the Indianapolis area while hitchhiking to Florida. One of the women told police that her companion was killed in a wooded area in Georgia and that she was raped and shot in Florida, authorities said.

Wednesday which authorized a reduction in fuel charges for customers of Indiana & Michigan Electric Co. The adjustment means I&M residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of energy in July, August and September will pay $1.17 less than base rates, 83-cents less than they will pay for power used this month.

But Wallace and Powers said the adjustment the first under the state’s new fuel charge law would have been even less if increased costs for coal from the company’s own mine had not had to be taken into account. Both commissioners said they were not disputing the validity of the costs.

Students due back in school YORKTOWN, Ind. (AP) - A number of York town High School pupils suspended for boycotting classes in protest of the firing of a popular teacher were due back in school today. Principal James Laws said the suspensions were for one day, and those disciplined could return today. An estimated 150 pupils, or nearly a quarter of the Yorktown enrollment, walked out of classes Wednesday in support of Theresa Nelson, 29, of Muncie, journalism teacher and adviser to the school newspaper. The school board voted 3-1 Tuesday night against renewing Mrs. Nelson’s contract, thus denying her tenure. She has taught at the near-Muncie school five years. Mrs. Nelson filed a suit in Indianapolis federal court earlier this year in a dispute over alleged censorship of the school paper. Laws said most of Wednesday’s protesters were never in any classes taught by Mrs. Nelson. “The kids who are in support of her are back in class,” he said. Laws recommended the firing because of “procedure” while Mrs. Nelson was adviser for the student newspaper, The Broadcaster. The principal objected to contents of several articles in the paper and claimed the teacher’s actions were not “in the best interest of the school corporation.”
