Sermon
By REV. WILLIAM F. STINEMAN, PH.D. St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church What person does not feel a sadness when recalling the events of a Friday unlike all other Fridays in the history of mankind? Even the historical fact of a man being unjustly put to death is enough to cause the least informed human being to feel a deep compuction. All normal people abhor the unjust treatment of the innocent; cruelty to another human being stirs the mind of any reasoning creature to deep emotion. When the believing Christian recalls that particular Friday, he experiences a deeper sorrow than all others feel about any other tragedy. It is the recollection of the Friday on which Christ died on a Cross for the crimes He did not commit. It was a Friday that most men would consider as bleak, dismal, horrid, anything less than “Good.” Yet, we Christians call it Good Friday because such an infinite good came from such an evil human event. For, what greater good has ever been done? - that one innocent man would lay down his life for his brothers! It was the Friday which gave eternal value to the life and destiny of each and every Christian who has been baptized since that Day called Good Friday. It was the Friday of Fridays - the best Friday that time has ever witnessed. Why? Because, as Paul wrote to the Church of Rome (Romans 6:3), “Do you not know that all who have been baptized in Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?” Out baptism of water is efficacious only to the extent that it derives its merit from the baptism of Christ on Calvary. But, whoever said Jesus was baptized on Good Friday? Scripture speaks of his baptism in the Jordan River by John as having taken place

Worship, 10:45, Sun evening 7:30; Prayer meeting- Wed. 7:30. S. School Supt. Richard E. Coleman, Pastor (Supply) Elizabeth J. Estep, pre-prayer service. earlier in His public life. True, He was baptized with water there, but following that event He Himself spoke of another baptism that He would receive. In Mark’s Gospel (10:38) Jesus asked: “Can you drink of the cup of which I drink, or be baptized with the baptism with which I am to be baptized?” And, in Luke’s Gospel (12:50) Jesus said: “But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished.” Both passages foretell a future baptism. It was His death on Calvary that Jesus referred to as His future baptism - a Baptism of Blood. He did not need a Baptism of Water because He was sinless, but He submitted to it as a symbol of our need to be washed clean of sin. Our being cleansed in the waters of baptism derived its effect only by reason of the death of Jesus: the voluntary shedding of His own blood. Had Jesus not been baptized in Blood, His baptism in Water would have been completely meaningless. This is the testimony of Paul who said that, when we are baptized with water, we are really baptized in Jesus’ death. For our baptism is effective only because Jesus’ Baptism in His own Blood was effective in reconciling us to the Father Ana, - finally, Jesus would never have risen from the dead had He not first died. So, we will never live to God if we don’t make our baptism in Jesus’ death become the instrument by which we die to sin, self, and the world, and so assure ourselves of a future resurrection - our Easter, like that of Jesus’ Easter. May this Good Friday be a most joyful Friday because by it we are reminded of our baptism of water made effective by Jesus’ baptism of blood. It is His death and resurrection that makes possible our life and resurrection.
